In this episode, John Federico (twitter: @gadgetboy), Craig Calder (twitter: @ccalder) and Steve Hatch (twitter:@shatch) opine about:

  • John will attend the ICSC Summit on October 20th
  • John will be leading a talk at Web2Open during Web 2.0 Expo NYC November 16-19
  • Craig will attend the PhocusWright Conference
  • Craig will be featured in an article on DMNews
  • TravelZoo/Fly.com is hiring!
  • Amazon/Audible is hiring!
  • Conan O’Brien and Newark Mayor Cory Booker are having a fun little sparring match. Conan is using the airwaves while Cory is using YouTube.
  • Comcast is in talks to by NBC Universal in whole or in part. Thank goodness for CMRR (Committed Monthly Recurring Revenue)!
  • Harper Collins is holding back the digital release of the upcoming book by Sarah Palin in order to drive hardcover sales. The ebook won’t be released until after Christmas.
  • Do people buy Kindle devices because the books are less expensive, knowing that they’ll earn their investment back over time? We’d like some data on that…
  • John bought his first Vook today.
  • Apple has approached magazine publishers about creating “iTunes for Print” with the magazines to be read on the company’s upcoming tablet. The magazine industry thinks it can do it themselves.
  • Senator Benjamin Cardin has proposed a bailout for the newspaper industry. We cringe. Let them become extinct - just as long as journalism doesn’t die with them. We need journalism but we don’t need newspapers.
  • CNN just released their iPhone app.
  • Sirius XM is now adding an additional $2 fee to your monthly bill to cover the performance royalty fees paid to musicians and artists.
  • Since Howard Stern’s deal with Sirius was tied to the stock price which is now at an all-time low, how will he have fared at the end of his contract?
  • Howard Stern will be the greatest, most successful podcaster ever once his contract with Sirius XM is up. It would also make a great iPhone app!
  • Click rates on display ads have dropped 50% to only 16% of the online audience.
  • “The ad networks are ruining online publishing.” — Whiny Publishers
  • CPM ads on videos are doing pretty well, according to Viddler.
  • Free All Media wants to deliver ad-supported song downloads. It’s like Deja Vu all over again…
  • Pandora went from near death to profitability in a year’s time. Steve actually uses his free 40 hours per month. Wow.
  • Metallica will be selling live tracks on LiveMetallica.com - mp3 or FLAC.
