Once Upon A Gene

As a new parent of a child with a rare genetic syndrome, I was lost. There was no guide. There was no rulebook. This was not what I had imagined. As I navigated my way through this new reality, I realized something that should have been simple, but was not. A truth that had always been there, but that I had lost sight of for a time - I am not alone.

And neither are you.

These are the stories of my family, and of families like ours. These are the stories of how we have persevered, cried, bonded, and grown. These are the stories of children who have been told that they cannot, and that have proved the world wrong

I love that Effie's response to needing (and not really finding) a supportive community to deal with the unique challenges of parenting a child with a rare genetic syndrome was to create that supportive community for everyone else. I'm glad that this podcast exists, and that I know about it so that I can direct the people who need it most to find it. Once Upon a Gene is educational and emotional. It's a project of love, and it shows.
Effie Parks is a class act. She says in her intro episode that when her son was diagnosed with a rare disease that she looked to podcasts to find her people. I get that and I think if you are reading this review, you do too. I don't have anyone in my life with a rare disease but I still often listen to her interviews because they are so delicate, loving and joyful. Did Effie find her people in podcasting? I don't know but I bet they will find her now that she is putting this much needed gem into the world, one episode at a time. Thanks Effie, you are an inspiration through and through.
