Matthew 18 - Rank in the Kingdom
18 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
- The title of Matthew 18 his rank in the Kingdom
o this is a question of power and position in heaven not on earth
- at that time
o after Jesus had Peter catch a fish and pay the double tax
o what are the odds that peter could catch one fish and it would have the tax money sufficient to pay the tax in it mouth (from all the millions fish)
- the disciples came to Jesus
o notice the disciples are the ones asking this question
o does this seem appropriate?
- Who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
o Why did they want to know
o What difference does it make
o Is this Christian believers caught up in pride?
2 And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, 3 and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
- Jesus answered the question by using a child to illustrate
- Unless you are converted and become like children
o Children simply trust their Dad without question
- You will not enter the kingdom of heaven
o It takes child like faith to enter heaven
o You must simply believe your heavenly father to get in
- Whoever then humbles himself as this child
o He is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven
o A obedient child comes when called, sits, listens, accepts his fathers words
o When you conduct yourself like this you become great in heaven
§ Faith, trust, obedience are the key
5 And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me; 6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.
- When you receive a child in Jesus name, you receive Jesus Himself (as unto Him!)
- But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble (to confuse, to trip up, to stop believing in or obeying God)
o It would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck and be drowned in the sea (because at this would cause death and be done)
o Punishment for the perversion of a child away from faith or obedience to Jesus will result in eternal punishment
o Note to school teachers this lesson is for you!
o Note to parents or authorities – this lesson is for you!
o There is a very serious price to pay for misleading children away from Jesus Christ!

7 “Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!
- Notice stumbling blocks will come
