Hi this is Chris Legaspi and today we're going to talk about digital drawing. Now I've been a digital artist for over 20 years now working professionally in video games. That’s where I started my career and more recently in the movie poster industry and most of the work I create for my clients and for the entertainment industry requires me to use digital software, digital tools, so I have quite a bit of experience in the process of digital drawing. Now, I want to briefly define what digital drawing is. In the previous episode we talked about digital painting and I defined painting simply as drawing plus colors. Now I want to quickly go into more detail about what drawing is.

Now as I mentioned previously digital typically means that you’re just going through an electronic interface and for most professional artists that means you're using a software application like Photoshop or more recently Procreate and then you going to interface with the computer using a digital tablet. The most prominent one is the Wacom tablet. Now what is drawing? Drawing to me is the foundation of all artwork. All artwork really begins with some form of drawing including sculptural art, three-dimensional art. And to me essentially drawing is the act of making marks. You know when all human beings, children you know we all can understand the idea of making marks. We take, we pick up pencils and crayons and things. When we first begin to make these marks, we kind of make marks and they take three different forms.

And these forms are either some kind of line or shape that we draw, or they take the form of a tone or a value that can be a light mark or a thin or a dark thicker mark. Or marks can also have a quality of edge. How hard a mark is compared to how soft a mark is. And that’s what we called edge. So these are the three elements or three forms that drawings can take and you know eventually as we become more sophisticated and we want to start to get into painting then we add the element of color, such as skin color palettes. But all of the art that we create begins at some form of drawing, some form of mark making. So that's the end of this episode. I just want to briefly describe or define what digital drawing is and specifically what makes up a drawing. In the next episode, we're going to talk more ideas on how to make digital art and the various tools that we can use. So with that in mind, get out there, keep drawing, keep painting, and build up that mileage. Bye for now.
