In 1988 a new kind of extraterrestrial visitor arrived in theaters. In the film Alien Nation, the immigrants from the stars were of a different breed. Instead of being invaders with superior lifestyles and technologies, these aliens were refugees. The Newcomers of Alien Nation were actually a race of beings bred to be slaves whose starship accidentally crash landed on Earth. In the world of Alien Nation, the aliens were creatures who genuinely needed our help and humanity welcomed them into our society with trepidatious open arms. This week on Part-Time Fanboy Kristian sits down with his friends J. Holtham and Yvis Cannavale to discuss a different kind of sci-fi movie. One that questions what might happen if visitors from another galaxy landed on our front doorstep, were vulnerable, and actually needed our help. Given the current political landscape, it’s a film whose subject matter still seems relevant today with a script that gives humanity the benefit of the doubt it may not have deserved.
