Show Notes

This is the flagship podcast of the PictureMethods blog where we deliver free insights and inspiration for photographers.

Thanks so much for listening. Today we WERE going to interview Trey Ratcliff but Trey had some scheduling conflicts so he’ll be on some other time. But never fear – you’re still going to be informed and entertained by our June guest – it’s none other than the man himself – Mr. Scott Kelby. Scott is president and CEO of KelbyOne (the online educational community for creative people); the editor and publisher of Photoshop User Magazine; Conference Technical Chair for the Photoshop World Conference & Expo; Host of the influential weekly photography talk show “The Grid;” Founder of the annual “Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk” (the world’s largest social photography event); Training Director and lead instructor for KelbyOne Live Seminars, and author of a string of bestselling books.

But more importantly, he’s one of the nicest guys in the photo business and I am lucky to call him my friend. He’s had my back time and time again and all that knowing we have occasionally been competitors. I don’t remember if it was him or me but we used the phrase “coopetition” back then.

Scott truly has a heart for helping photographers get the most out of the photographic experience and he’s such a special guest that I’m devoting a large portion of the show to his interview. That means this month we’ll be changing format a bit. There will be no insights section and the rest of the show segments will all be shorter than usual. I expect we’ll go back to the regular format for the July episode. You don’t want to miss my conversation with Scott – it’s coming up shortly.

Next month I hope to have Matthew Jordan Smith as my special guest. He’s photographed some of the biggest names in show business and I’ll ask him for some portrait and lighting tips. I’ll also discuss when you should consider upgrading your lenses and what factors you should consider as you make that decision.

And now it’s time for the photo news…

The Japanese Camera Press club announced the Camera GP 2019 awards recently. The Grand prize went to the Panasonic S1R. Second place went to the Nikon Z7 and third to the Olympus OM-D E-M1 MK II – in an interesting side note – the press club readership picked the Olympus as number one.

The Lucie Foundation, along with its Advisory Board, has announced an impressive list of honorees who will be recognized at the 2019 Lucie Awards gala at Carnegie Hall on October 22, 2019. Among the honorees, Jay Maisel will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Stephen Shore will be honored for Achievement in Fine Art – Annie Leibovitz for Achievement in Portraiture and Maggie Steber for Achievement in Photojournalism. You can see the full list of honorees at www.luciefoundation.org.

In what seems like an abrupt about face, Adobe started selling the $9.99 photography plan on their website again. Last month, the option to buy the cheapest version of the Adobe Creative Cloud program went away and the Internet lost its mind. While Adobe hasn’t made any public facing comments about this that we can find, it appears they heard the outcry about the change in policy and relented. For how long is anyone’s guess.

Fuji announced a 102mp medium-format, mirrorless camera.

If you have photography related news that you think might be fit to share with the Picture Methods Podcast audience, send an email to: [email protected] along with news release. We can’t guarantee we will use every submission, but we will read them all.

Sponsor – Picture Methods Tours & Workshops

My thanks to Scott for joining me. You can learn more about Photoshop World at photoshopwold.com.

If there’s a photographer you’d like me to consider interviewing on the show, send me an email – [email protected].

Because of the long interview with Scott there will be no insights section in this month’s podcast but next month I’ll talk about when you should upgrade your lenses and why.

Now it’s time for everyone’s favorite Picture Methods Podcast segment – Q&A – we have three questions again this month. And remember, without the Q – there can be no Q&A so send in those questions – more on that after we answer this month’s crop.

June QA

This month’s Q&A section is abbreviated because of the long interview with Scott Kelby but I did want to take at least one question. And it comes from Mike Kaplan of Venice, FL.

Just curious–do you put a clear filter or UV filter on each of your lenses? People differ on the use of these filters…

If you have questions for the show, please send them (one question per email) to [email protected]. We can’t guarantee we will put your question on the air, but we will read every question internally and if we do use your question, you will be eligible to win a prize – one prize per quarter. Our next prize will be a Platypod.

Encouragement

It’s time for my word of encouragement. On this month’s show I want to address the photography police. You know – the people who tell you what is and is not acceptable in the realm of photography. While some of these folks may have good intentions, most are just trolling for click bait. At the end of the day the oldest rule in photography is this – there are no rules. Only you can determine whether or not what you’re doing is “photography.” So don’t be discouraged by purists who say you can use Photoshop or digital or anything else to make your art. As long as you’re not purposely misleading people, you do what you want and be proud of it. Ignore the self-appointed photography police. And know that I am rooting for you.

Remember next month, I’ll have my pal Matthew Jordan Smith on to talk portraiture. I’ll have more photo news, some more Q&A and some more inspiration and encouragement.
