Scotty speaks with Mathew Passy of Pod to Pod on this episode of Podcast Bay. Getting his start as a radio newsroom... guy, Mathew was able to experience broadcasting from the ground up. He was hired by Wall Street Journal Radio Network, and did a lot of work for them before they decided to close the doors on radio and let everyone go. He became an independent Podcast Producer, and became involved with Pod to Pod, the go to resource for all things podcasting.

-Trash-

Mathew admits that he hates it when people say "I don't understand what a podcast is" and that he dislikes the word Podcast. He and Scott discuss the visual esthetic of the word, as well as the outdated feel of it, as well as why he believes it's holding the industry back a bit.

He explains what a Pro-caster is, and why they are destroying the organic visibility of smaller podcasts. He also talks about the double edged effect that platforms have by promoting shows, but also muddying the waters of podcasting.

Mathew also talks about the 3 personality types in Podcasting that drive him crazy: The Humble Braggers, The Wannabe, and the fake Experts and Consultants. He and Scotty laugh about all of them, and carry onto happier things.

-Treasure-

The idea of podcasting is still the future of mass communication. Mathew feels that there is something beautiful about radio still: Just spoken word. The words, the tone. He also talks about the convenience of podcasts compared to terrestrial radio during commutes, and how podcasts are so much more personal.

Scotty brings up the difference between a radio call in, and how a call in may only last minutes whereas on a podcast the guest gets a full episode. They discuss how much more intimate and attention grabbing that is for a guest or someone who wants to be on the air.

Mathew mentions what with enough hard work, learning, sleepless nights and effort: it's nice to be able to be your own boss and have creative control over something.

There are still more amazing people than not in this industry. He explains just how many people are doing amazing things, are working with a lot of heart and passion, and are changing the industry and in some cases the world for the better. He also recommends being active in the community, because you never know what unique opportunities will present themselves..

-Tricks-

Mathew talks about Ringr and how it creates the call for you and records both sides of the conversation. He explains that it's good for interviewing the non-podcaster. He also gets into a small explanation about audio standards, and what tends to be considered acceptable sound quality.

Scotty also brings up Pod to Pod, the Podcasting Newsletter and website that Mathew's involved with. Mathew explains how he got started with Pod to Pod, what it's all about, and the direction the guys are taking it.

Finally, Mathew puts weight on the most important piece of all: Just Be You. Don't do it to compare, boost numbers or make money. Podcast because you are passionate about your subject, and excited about spreading the message. Everything else will come if you're committed to learning and getting better.

-Quotes-
