Pentru un om care vreme de 50 de ani s-a luptat să supraviețuiască simulând incompetența, Claudius se descurcă excelent odată ajuns la cârma imperiului. Deși aparent imperiul era sărăcit de Gaius (Caligula), Claudius găsește suficiente resurse în punga imperiului să plătească pentru noi campanii militare. Cel mai mare cuceritor între Augustus și Traian (sau poate între Cezar și Traian), Claudius împinge imperiul roman mai departe.
