Description

John Nuttall and Amanda Korody are scraping by on welfare and methadone in a basement suite with John’s grandma, when they find themselves embroiled in a terrorist plot. A mysterious figure named Abe comes into their lives and introduces the couple to a shadowy world of global extremism. With Abe as their mentor and benefactor, John and Amanda hatch a plan to bomb a national holiday celebration using homemade pressure cooker devices. They have no idea that federal police are tracking their every move. Through nearly a hundred hours of surveillance footage and wiretaps, Pressure Cooker puts you in the middle of a sprawling anti-terror operation at the height of the War on Terror — one the courts will eventually call a “travesty of justice." This is an interesting 5-part story about a couple of barely functioning people who get caught up in drug addiction, Islam, and, ultimately, a police domestic terrorist investigation. The series seems to suggest that the police operation was at best questionable, and at worst may have been entrapment, but I think it does a good job of leaving it up to the listener to decide.
Not sure who to contact, but this is a CBC podcast, and not a Spotify exclusive. I really enjoyed this show. The episodes were so carefully crafted to tell this really compelling story. Even though I'm Canadian, I never heard about this foiled terrorist plot before, and it was all very interesting. The podcast clearly had access to all recordings submitted in the case (undercover), which means you get to listen to the real version, not a recounting. The pod follows this arc: John and Amanda are foiled placing pressure cooker bombs in the park where the Canada Day celebrations will be taking place. How did they get to radicalized? And was their radicalization real and natural, or...induced ? Go in blind, and you'll enjoy it! Make up your own opinion on the outcome, but I agree with the judge.
