Wearing too many hats? As an entrepreneur, trying to do all the work yourself can exhaust you and stagnate your growth. Hear insights about:

  • Why it can be so easy to be distracted by life and the chaos around you and miss out on doing the things that can move the needle for your business
  • Why wearing too many hats in your business results in burnout, choosing to stay small, or learning to scale up
  • How The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber explains that every solo entrepreneur wears three hats in the beginning: technician, manager and entrepreneur
  • What each of those three roles (technician, manager and entrepreneur) is responsible for, and why doing all three roles can leave you feeling lost and disengaged
  • Why being stuck in the technician role burns you out and derails your ability to grow your business and fully embrace the manager and entrepreneur roles
  • Why it’s crucial to be willing to learn to lead and manage, while letting go of technician responsibilities by hiring others to take over those duties
  • Why now is the right time to stop and evaluate whether you’re at a crossroads and reconsider your goals and how you’re working to get there

Wearing Too Many Hats as an Entrepreneur

In his classic book “The E-Myth Revisited,” author Michael Gerber talks about the three hats every small business owner starts out wearing: technician, manager and entrepreneur.

The danger is that wearing too many hats in your business can exhaust you, stretch you too thin, and hold you back from focusing on the work that would truly move the needle for your business forward.

In this week’s short and sweet solocast episode of the Pursuing Freedom podcast, I discuss these three roles and explain why it’s crucial that you learn to let go of the technician role by hiring someone to take care of those responsibilities. When you free up your time, your energy and your mental bandwidth, you can truly focus on doing the tasks that matter.

Wearing Too Many Hats is a Momentum Killer

When you’re just starting out, you have to do everything yourself. It can become so easy to fall into the trap of thinking you have to do it all yourself even as your business begins to grow. You get so used to constantly hustling that it becomes difficult to let go of responsibilities.

However, wearing too many hats really does drag you down. If your business reaches a point where you can’t grow further on your own because there just aren’t enough hours in the day, you’re at an important crossroads. Some business owners are tempted to scale down their business, but that creates chaos! Instead, it’s time to double-check your priorities and then look into bringing in help.

Learning to Let Go

If you can let go of certain responsibilities, you truly are freeing yourself from the grind and can focus on the work that makes a difference. You have to learn to let go of the “technician” hat, let someone else wear it, and focus on the manager and entrepreneur hats. You just have to be willing to learn how to do so.

I truly want to help you build a life you don’t need a vacation from, and so I invite you to visit my website at www.pursuingfreedom.com where you’ll find lots of helpful resources, podcast episodes like this one, and other tools to help you break free of the grind!
