On Thursday, President Biden signed an executive order requiring COVID-19 vaccination for all federal employees. He instructed the Labor Department to develop rules that would force private businesses with more than 100 employees to make full vaccination or weekly testing compulsory. And he said he plans to mandate vaccines for those working in hospitals or other medical facilities that treat Medicare and Medicaid patients. It’s a big expansion of federal power – some say it is unconstitutional – and it sets up a fight with those Republican governors who oppose mandates, some of whom have already pledged to defy the new federal rules. Also this week, the Democrats are counting down the days until September 27 – the self-imposed deadline for a vote on the president’s “build back better bill “– a spending package with an unknowable price tag, festooned with all sorts of new entitlements. With a slim majority in the House and a 50/50 divide in the senate, every vote is critical.
