Two major earthquakes have struck off the coast of New Zealand this morning and a tsunami activity alert is in place.The first, a magnitude 7.1, at 2.27am, 100 kilometres off of East Cape,generated a tsunami with the first waves striking the shore at Hicks Bay just before 3am.The latest, a magnitude 7.4, near the Kermadecs, more than 900 kilometres North-East of Auckland.A NEW national advisory has been issued, warning people to expect strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore, following that quake near the Kermadecs.That applies to the east coast of the North Island from the Bay of Islands to Whangarei. Strong currents and surges can injure and drown people.There is a danger to swimmers, surfers, people fishing, small boats and anyone in or near the water close to shore.The National Emergency Management Agency Minister, Kiri Allan, spoke to Susie Ferguson.
