A mystery in space with a complex and intelligent setting ancient and a bunch of touchingly human characters, regardless of actual species. Beware, you will be earwormed by "Supercasanova" until the heat death of the universe.
Super fast paced, does NOT pull its punches. I need the songs to be on spotify by themselves so I can listen on repeat because they're so so beautiful! Dynamic, intriguing and most importantly, very very enjoyable! <3
Roguemaker is SO good, and absolutely one of the podcasts I'm most excited to listen to this year. The production quality of this podcast is incredible. There's a lot of characters to be managing, along with absolutely excellent sound design and the inclusion of music is really, really clever. The ongoing plot is so clever and draws you in from the first twenty minutes - the clues/red herrings/character beats set up in the first few episodes frame a really fantastic mystery, and also allows you to really get invested in the characters' lives. They're all really fleshed out and - for the most part - absolute sweethearts. The writing for the podcast is so interesting - equal parts no idea what's about to happen next and so excited to see where it goes. Definitely one of my favorites of the year!
Listen, I love sci-fi 😂 and I love a good mystery even more. We don’t know who sabotaged the ship, we don’t know where they’re going, and everyone seems to have secrets. The cast is fantastic and the music is really fun to listen to! I love the story a lot and I need to know what happens next 👀😂
An incredible premise and lovingly executed. I can't wait to hear more of this story and these characters.
Roguemaker was pitched to me as “whodunnit in space” which, technically, yes but it far surpassed that for me. It’s hard to explain just how much I love this premise without spoiling too much but the show includes just the right amount of mystery, drama, hard sci-fi, and character-driven story to make a perfect mixture that refuses to be confined to just one genre. Plus not only the voice acting but also the singing is phenomenal, the musical moments in this really elevate the whole show, and the production is so polished. Seriously, if you’re looking for characters to fall in love with, in a super high-quality production, Roguemaker is for you. I’m already planning my next re-listen.
A cosmic mystery set in a spectacularly-realised vision of a spacefaring future. The use of in-universe archival audio, the future slang and alien idioms, the thought put into what kind of pop culture and sports would exist in this universe, it makes everything feel so lived in. I love it.
Roguemaker fantastically combines a brilliant and original sci-fi world with the very real horrors of travel on a terrible airline. It's part mystery, part sci-fi, part musical, part comedy, all blended beautifully and performed by and incredibly talented group of voice actors! It's well worth a listen. And relisten. And then a third relisten because you'll just want to listen again and again.
There's so much to love in this show; from the sheer command and celebration of the underlying science, to one of the best depictions of an AI out there. However, my two favourite things are:1) The diverse, complex and adorable cast of characters2) That one outtake which involves the word "soup" being sung roughly 150 times
Roguemaker is science fiction audio drama at its best! What starts as a gripping whodunnit develops into something …. Much bigger. The show’s creator has a background in astronomy and it makes for incredibly cool listening! The show has a large and spectacular cast but each character is well developed and has a satisfying contribution to the plot as a whole and personal character development through the series. The VAs are very well chosen with individual and recognisable voices and I have to give a particular shout out to Nhea Durousseau who had so many scene-stealing moments! One thing that makes Roguemaker stand out in the sci-fi crowd is the absolutely amazing music. Two of the characters are in a band, allowing for songs to be naturally included in the show. I am yet to go a day without getting Supercassanova in my head! I love this show and I hope we get more Roguemaker or more from the same team in the future!
The fun of this show is that it combines the Agatha Christie-style "someone in this room is the murderer" tropes with relatively hard science fiction. It's very self-aware about the tension that exists there. Exposition is brilliantly delivered in the early episodes through snippets of radio broadcasts and commercials. The cast is large but the characters feel distinct. The AI actually feels like a sentient program rather than a person trapped in a ship, which is a sci-fi pet peeve of mine. Also it's not exactly a musical but, like, it's not *not* a musical - there's songs. More songs than you'd expect. There is, like, a lot going on in this show. But it never feels like there's too much going on. And every episode really leaves you waiting for the next one. Love the sound design, love the music, love the development of the alien culture. The astronomy is more accurate than you usually find in sci-fi pods, if you care about that sort of thing, due to the writer being an astronomer. It's all very original and it all feels very well thought-out.
ROGUEMAKER strongly reminds me of 70s/80s hard scifi, with its mix of weird, incredibly unreliable-narrator type characters, and science-based world-building. The characters themselves are an interesting collection, with each voice defining itself in both sound and dialog. I sometimes struggle to identify different voices, but with these characters I was able to put story to name very early. I might not have known their NAMES, but I could tell you that that one was the nervous music one, that one was the (extra) angry one, and THAT one was the flight attendant with self-esteem issues. The larger story itself isn't hugely within my personal set of interests, though it's well-executed (mysterious, galaxy-altering species that has vanished/gone extinct aren't really my jam) but the characters themselves have got me coming back, because I want to know what's going to happen to them! The highlight of the show for me is Ship, the ship's AI, voiced by the show's writer/creator. The switches in and out of hospitality mode are amazing, and the thought put into why and HOW the AI would interact with the passengers/crew is fascinating and well done. Overall, a well-told story with the heart and science of classic scifi. Recommended if you like Niven & Pournelle, Babylon 5, and maybe a bit of Hitchhiker's Guide.
