RATING
It's well produced, but that's about it. Everything is completely scripted, the music is terrible, and there are voice actors. Serial killers generally have pretty interesting stories, and if an interesting story is told well, you don't really need all the other crap. This show takes the opposite approach. Plus, I really don't find the psychology aspect of the show to be necessary. Unless you know nothing about true crime/serial killers, there's nothing to be learned from it. Vanessa often offers simple explanations despite the complex nature of psychology, but one can understand why - she's not a medical professional or any kind of expert (she doesn't claim to be either). Overall, it's just kind of cheesy and silly.
Well researched but I can't stand the over the top almost autotune like production. Their voices are grating and overly american and the way the hosts interact is so fake. Too scripted.
If you’re interested in the backgrounds of serial killers, this podcast works. But honestly, I would say it’s okay at best. You could probably research all this information in the amount of time these podcasts take. The hosts are fairly monotone when speaking, so it’s easy to lose interest as well. And personally, I’m not a fan of the psychological aspect of it. I find psychology and human behavior very interesting, but having someone who has no credentials in the field just... feels strange. Besides, if you taken a psych class, you’ll see that everything Vanessa says is pretty basic, surface level stuff. You probably could’ve assumed it all yourself. Originally, I wrote that they need to put more warnings and I will say that as episodes go on, they do get better at giving trigger/content warnings so that’s cool. Honestly, I really wish they would also do a portion at the end that highlights any known victims and lets us know a little information about their life, even if it’s just a career or hobby. Sometimes I feel this podcast has a tendency to just brush victims off and focus a little too much on the killer. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. Don’t get me wrong, the whole show is about SERIAL KILLERS. I just feel that sometimes, purely focusing on the killer almost feels as a glorification and dehumanizes the people who lost their lives. I think an end segment where they at LEAST give all the names and ages of the victims as a memorial would be very nice and humanize them. Anyways, a Wiki trip could probably give you at least half the info these people give you. Good for information, but entertainment wise... not so much. There’s better podcasts out there. And I promise you, after listening to this podcast, you’ll NEVER want to hear the word “prolific” again...
Parcast podcasts as a whole are a mixed bag. The only one I continue to follow is Serial Killers, since every other series of theirs that I listened to moved to Spotify, and they're really not good enough to follow. I've heard some people describe them as a middle school book report podcast, and that's not inaccurate. It sounds like they're reading full sentences from index cards sometimes. Their topics are fairly well researched, and they make for a decent time killer. The biggest problem with them is that they advertise every single title on every single podcast, even those podcasts that are exclusive to spotify. I didn't bother unsubscribing from 5 of their podcasts that moved to spotify, because I held out hope that maybe someday I'd get it back in my regular podcast app. Instead, I woke up one morning to over 20 new episodes downloaded to my app - they had sent half of one episode from a new series to every single one of their old/ defunct podcast listings with "listen to the other half of this, only on spotify!" as well as commercials for other new series. I had to manually delete every single episode and ad multiple times, since they sent those ads and half episode to every single podcast they'd once had public. They're an incredibly spammy company and while I understand the need to advertise their presence on spotify, it's excessive to send ads and partial episodes to every single series they run, regardless of relevance (especially when they include in the actual series episodes that they have more content on spotify. How many times can they fit the word spotify into one episode?). I was okay with some of their cringier sound effects and their recreations of events, but they really have no respect for their followers with their excessive advertisements.
I like the stories. But there is one thing that bugs me so much I can hardly listen to them back to back. The repetitive adjectives; such as prolific and notorious. Those two words are used so many times I lose track. There are more words out there why use the same ones over and over for every killer. It makes them less unique.
I absolutely adore Greg. He's the best podcaster I've ever heard. But unfortunately when I hear Vanessa, and I don't have anything against her, makes me annoyed. No chemistry between them, and let's be honest, he can do it perfectly on his own. I miss Hunted Places.
I am an avid listener of this podcast, I love the descriptions, and how everything is put into context: not ignoring the systematic racism and sexism in the police force explains a lot...However, I am sometimes taken aback by the passionate tone of writing when it comes to rape...? Why focus that much on the fear of the victim and the excitement of the killer, only when it comes to sexual assault, and not any other type of crime?Other episode are still very much worth giving a listen though!!
these podcasts are amazing it would be better if they could go into more detail about the killer of the episode
Its a good listen but like all the other episodes I think its tasteless When Greg says 'Have a killer weekend'. People have been abused, murdered etc and by saying that turns it into a joke imo?
Just all around bad. If you have never heard a podcast before you might like this but anyone who listens to podcasts at all will hate this. Over produced, extremely poor research, both hosts have no personality. The show constantly switches music. And if you wanna hear 6 ads for a podcast. This is for you
My favorite true crime pod, but they keep incorporating the readers of unsolved murders. I'm sure they are nice people, but the guy from unsolved murders keeps using this upward inflection, and truely just sounds like he's trying too hard and it takes me out of every single pod they are in. Please, idk if there is some kind of partnership agreement but he has to be coached before going live.
Simply the best and professional. No jokes, laughs or giving their personal problems.. it's scripted and informative
well structured and very clear and great hosts. Vanessa and Greg have professional voices and are great to listen to. I personally enjoy that this podcast is so well produced and scripted because its content is not something I want to listen to through a casual discussion. I also find the psychological aspect of the podcast extremely interesting.
Love it , listen to it everyday ❤️
Brilliant thanks for sharing. Perth WA
The older podcasts can be overly scripted, but the more recent ones are wonderfully produced in my opinion. They usually begin with the childhood and background of the killer, discusses psychology, and then dives into the murderous acts these individuals partake in. I put this podcast on at work and I am obssesed. Although it is a podcast relating to killers, they don't let us forget about the victims and what they have gone through, so I really do respect that. Their voices are easy to listen to, and really put me in the story. By far my favorite podcast.
Fantastic podcast when Carter is not one of the hosts. His voice and inflection when narrating is completely unbearable. I hope he stops injecting himself in the podcast and let the original hosts do their thing.
I really enjoy this podcast. As a therapist and true crime aficionado, I find the stories in psychology. Interesting. If I had one negative, it would be what seems as too deep of a compassion for the criminal and maybe not enough for the victims. Vanessa, especially seems to make comments about the tragic nature of their life, and what they could’ve become if they had not been abused, also equating a states death penalty rules to what the criminal has done as just as equally violent. I’ve worked with many patients that have come from horrific forms of abuse, and did not grow up to be a serial killers. So the question more is were these people wired from beginning to move to a darker force of their personality, when life went wrong. There are more people who are abused and mistreated in this world that grow up and end up learning how to live happy, productive, lives. My sympathy, empathy goes to these people who truly overcame. I think more sympathy should be given to the victims and less to the criminal.
The stories of infamous serial killers with some more elementary psychology therein. If you have a lot of true crime media in your life, then this isn't the podcast for you because it is stuff you would have heard before, but for people who a more superficial or fledgling interest in true crime, this podcast is a good beginning point. It's well produced and the narrative has momentum despite the banter and the psychological lessons/asides.
Perfect true crime podcast
