God has filled his world with reflections of himself. And he stamped his very image onto the frame of our humanity. Yet for all this commonality and shared identity in Him, we are perpetually given to divisiveness. We see our differences not as varied pieces in a mosaic of God's image, but rather as opportunities to differentiate ourselves. Each of us holds our particular expression of God's life in highest esteem. And we make threats that if others fail to become more like us, we will reject or abandon them. But it is not sameness that will finally bring us together. It is oil. God anointed His Son in His Spirit, and the oil of that Spirit grew Jesus up into full maturity to move toward impoverished, broken, and even criminal people with healing. And when Jesus poured out that same Spirit of healing on all flesh, people from every tribe and background began to discover a love and forbearance for one another that is nothing less than the fullness of God alive in them.
