A painful feeling during the menstrual cycle and hating your period? Our guest, Omolewa Jennifer Thedford, dives deep into sharing her personal period experience and advocating for women to appreciate and understand their period.  Omolewa awakened her desire to help people in their community after she got pregnant, experienced an awful situation and didn’t get support from elders. She witnessed the same situation for women around their community and found the missing links to be: birth, breastfeeding, and killing of the womb. Omolewa wants to be an instrument for the connection of these missing links to restore the birth culture. Omolewa honors the sacred blood, the body’s needs and wants by performing spiritual rituals and ceremonies using water, a variety of herbs, menstrual blood (blood of the womb) that completely transform her life. Due to the sensitivity women have during their cycle, rest is very important and part of her practice. Another part of her practice is using entheogenic mushrooms to further connect to a higher level of consciousness – something you should not do alone!  Omolewa serves as a light for other women showing them they can connect to other dimensions, people, and energies during their cycles.  This gives women an opportunity to gain knowledge and wisdom from spirit and ancestors. According to her, flowing blood gives her light and power. Omolewa highly recommends getting into the true essence of self and facing fear and ego. “The things we fear the most are the things that help us get to where we need to be.” -Omolewa Thank you, Omolewa, for joining the flow-versation!  If you would like to check out Omolewa and work with her, she can be reached at any of her various outlets.  Episode Link for more info: http://www.sistersofflow.com/periodrituals   About Omolewa: Omolewa is a loving Mother, Holistic Massage Therapist & Doula, Midwives Assistant, Placenta Alchemist and Urban Gardener. As a Massage Therapist of 12 years she has shared her gift of healing touch and Earth medicine with women, men, children and elders in her community. Through this healing work she has cultivated her ancestral and spiritual gifts as womb worker, keeper of ancient plant medicine, sacred ceremonies and women's Blood mysteries.  Special thanks to our Flow-versations with Dr. D partner: Awesome Local Apps Thank you for joining us today at Flow-versations with Dr. D, a mini-show of the Sisters of Flow, where we “go with the flow” about anything and everything menstrual cycles. Decrease environmental waste by using reusable pads! They are not as difficult to use as you may think. Reusable diapers are already being used and both have been used for years. Sarah Callaway and Mike Pitman share how they came into opening House of Callaway and the process for using reusable pads, including how you can transition to using them easily.   About Sarah Callaway and Mike Pitman: Owners, House of Callaway Sarah and Mike own a business, known as House of Callaway, which sells handmade cloth menstrual pad and other items such as handmade earrings, bunting and salt deodorant. The business was started while the pair were still in university in South Wales but it was met with such great adversity that the story of it appeared in the national newspapers. The overall goal of the business is to provide women with an eco-friendly option of sanitary protection while helping them to avoid unnecessary chemicals found in disposable products and save money in the long term.  Contact: www.houseofcallaway.co.uk www.facebook.com/houseofcallaway www.instagram.com/houseofcallaway www.twitter.com/houseofcallaway   Special thanks to our Flow-versations with Dr. D partners: Awesome Local Apps and ScheduleMax   Download Sisters of Flow App today! Tina Conroy joins Dr. D in this flow-versation about something so mysterious, yet so obvious – intuition and spirituality! During the phases of the cycle (along with the moon cycle), there are times where one may be more intuitive or feel more sensitive. Tina walks you through how to identify that and what you can do about it if you are looking to heighten intuition and spirituality.   About Tina Conroy: Reiki Master Teacher, Intuitive/Medium, Yoga Teacher, Empowerment Coach Get-INTUIT with Tina Conroy   Every woman has the ability to develop her power of intuition.  Yet few know where to begin. Get-Intuit with Tina Conroy Since childhood, I’ve known that I’m connected to something greater than me. At an early age I realized that I inherited my psychic grandmother’s gift of prophetic dreams – visions that were always vivid, full of sensory detail and eventually real. Since then, I’ve spent over 20 years attuning my mind and body to truly listen to that internal voice that can predict or advise and is inspired by a greater power. Now I help others to strengthen their inner voice by improving mental and physical health to synchronize the mind - body connection. As an intuitive energy healer and medium, I host Get-Intuit, a weekly podcast that explores intuition. I’m a yoga instructor and Reiki Master Teacher at PRACTICE Body Mind Soul. Through my role as a Transformational Health Coach, I teach women how to develop positive habits that bring lifestyle changes, including weight loss. I teach meditation in individual and group settings.   Through a symbiotic mind-body relationship, our intuitive power is discovered and strengthened. When we listen, it serves us well. I welcome the opportunity to help you find yours.   Favorite Resource: Christiane Northrup, MD – www.drnorthrup.com   Contact: www.tinaconroy.com www.facebook.com/getintuitwithtinaconroy www.twitter.com/tconroyoga www.instagram.com/Tcon1017   Special thanks to our Flow-versations with Dr. D partners: Awesome Local Apps and ScheduleMax  Download Sisters of Flow App today! Thank you, to one of the “badass menstrual activists” out there today: Jennifer Weiss-Wolf for going with the flow about public policy as it relates to access to menstrual products and menstrual equity. Jen discusses how she came into wanting to change the game for menstrual access and what were the steps she had to take. Although the sales tax has been removed for the state of New York due to her tremendous efforts in getting things going, her work is still not done. Her book, Periods Gone Public is slated to be released fall 2017.   About Jennifer Weiss-Wolf (from www.jenniferweisswolf.com): Cosmopolitan Magazine dubbed 2015 "The Year The Period Went Public"...and there is so much more now happening in 2016 to make this year one for the record books.  At the fore of commentary and advocacy is Jennifer Weiss-Wolf, a leading voice for equitable menstrual policy in America. Bustle named her one of the nation's "badass menstrual activists." Newsweek deemed her the "architect of the U.S. policy campaign to squash the tampon tax." NYC Council Member Julissa Ferreras said she "catapulted menstrual equity into a national conversation...the advocate every cause hopes for." Jen is the author of the forthcoming book, PERIODS GONE PUBLIC (Skyhorse, Sept. 2017), which tells the full story of the emerging political movement for menstrual equity.  Her four-part series in The New York Times shed new light on the issue here at home and globally, as have her op-eds in TIME, Bloomberg, Newsweek, the New York Daily News, Cosmopolitan, The Nation, Ms. Magazine and others. She is cited widely in the media, including by The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Cosmopolitan, Newsweek, New York Magazine, The Atlantic, Essence, Upworthy, Mic, VICE, CNN, NPR, MSNBC and Yahoo Health, as well as by experts at the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Kinsey Institute.  In partnership with Cosmopolitan, Jen spearheaded the first U.S. “No Tax on Tampons” change.org petition, which now has more than 60,000 signatures.  By day, Jen is a vice president of the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. She serves on the Boards of Support the Girls and Girls Helping Girls. Period., and as an Advisory Board member of ZanaAfrica Foundation, which provides menstrual health education and products to girls in Kenya.   Favorite Resource: Flow: Cultural History of Menstruation (can purchase here) and Period!   Contact: www.jenniferweisswolf.com http://www.twitter.com/jweisswolf www.instaram.com/jenniferweisswolf   Special thanks to our Flow-versations with Dr. D partners: Awesome Local Apps and ScheduleMax   Download Sisters of Flow App today! Thank you, Claire Coder, for joining the flow-versation!  Claire is the founder and CEO of Aunt Flow and we got to talk about what makes this subscription-based pads and tampons company so different from the others Hint: you’re actually helping someone else who is in need. At only 19 years old, she is changing the game in what it means to menstruate with others and have a gender neutral company.   About Claire Coder: Never did I think that I was going to be talking about menstruation for a living. When I was younger, I dreamed of being a princess. In some ways, I am living that dream. I wear an invisible tampon tiara, I wave around a magical pad, and I eat a lot of food. In my Perfect Period Palace, everyone has access to tampons and pads.   Even though I lived in a fantasy world growing up, my mom never shied away from sharing with me the realities of life. As an art therapist, she frequently dealt with female clients struggling with basic needs. She explained that the women she served often wore plastic bags and multiple layers of clothing when on their periods; it was easier to soil garments than to get a tampon. I didn’t understand why.   Now 19 years old, I have come to realize that tampons and pads aren't covered by food stamps, the WIC program, and in most states they are taxed. Often, women, shelters, and families conclude that food takes precedence over basic menstrual hygiene products. Not having a tampon or pad is a horrible situation. EVERY woman can attest to this. I wanted to create a sustainable solution for this problem, so Aunt Flow came to town. As a woman, I understand the burdens of a period and I want to make it as pleasurable as possible, for every human.   I UNDERSTAND THAT TAMPONS WON’T SOLVE POVERTY, BUT ENSURING HUMANS HAVE ACCESS TO THEIR BASIC NEEDS IS A START. WE NEED TO START SOMEWHERE, SO WHY NOT "DOWN THERE?"   Favorite Resource: www.auntflow.org   Purchase your BOGO Pads and Tampons here: http://www.auntflow.org/?rfsn=419771.99946 Use code: SISTERS for $5 off your first box   Contact: www.auntflow.org www.facebook.com/goauntflow www.twitter.com/goauntflow www.instagram.com/goauntflow   Special thanks to our Flow-versations with Dr. D partners: Awesome Local Apps and ScheduleMax   Download Sisters of Flow App today! Thanks for joining us on this week’s episode of the Sisters of Flow, we “go with the flow” about anything and everything menstrual cycles! What happens when a young lady goes to see a prophet about her cramps in Zimbabwe? We think some cultural beliefs need to be broken. If you’re looking to quit smoking (or start another regimen), there is a way to use your cycle where your chances of success are increased. Many people are using over-the-counter painkillers for their cramps, but there just might be a side effect you didn’t expect.   Feed your period with black beans! These delicious Yin tonic beans can help supplement estrogen levels rising in the beginning of your cycle. Let’s explore how a yoga practice affects your perception and what that means for your cycle. Turns out there is more in which you can benefit from doing yoga than the increased circulation and blood flow to have a better cycle. Female martial artists have a major benefit compared to male counterparts – all because they have a period! The martial arts trainers have a different training practice and technique using Ayurveda. A released study goes against the old thought of the Uterus being sterile. There are bacteria that is in endometrial fluid which may actually increase success rates of IVF or even conception in general!   Feed your period with coconut milk! Tonify the Yang and warm the Uterus to decrease cramps and have a more regular cycle.   Special thanks to our Flow Friday Fact partner, the Womb Sanctuary, A Sacred Place for Women to be Seen, Heard and Loved!
