I was really excited to have found a podcast that dissects and analyzes pop music, as I’ve been interested in it’s evolution over the past couple of years. Pop has merged with so many other genres, eras, and writing styles to create new sounds. Many of the artists responsible for this shift are women like Lana Del Ray, Janelle Monae, Taylor Swift, Lorde, Lizzo, and Billie Eilish - who’s confessional writing style made room for other artists to use their voices to reach listeners on a more personal level. However, when I was listening to the Taylor Swift episode where Nate and Charlie review her single, ME!, I was immediately put off by the condescending tone. The episode seemed focused on minimizing her efforts right out of the gate. I looked around for other episodes on these groundbreaking artists, but sadly couldn’t find any other than a few on Billie Eilish (where the first words I heard in the preview were about the great work her older brother had done for her career). The views in this podcast just seem very one-dimensional. If you are a straight white guy who likes pop music, this is your podcast. Otherwise, keep looking.
