Named after two sausage dogs called Oscar & Frank, Mitch Burgess is the founder of an Aussie eyewear label unlike any other.

What sets the brand apart from its competition is its marketing – the dogs run the show.

We chat to Mitch Burgess about his unique approach to marketing and the power of Instagram as a strategy:

Instagram as a strategy
If you’re going to start using Instagram be prepared to put in the hours.
“Instagram in itself is a game. It’s like that’s a full time job just on it’s own,” Mitch says.
The level of engagement and followers you attract reflects how much time you put into it and how involved you are. Be prepared to spend hours, reaching out and engaging with others to grow your brand.
“At the start I put in some hard yards. Like constantly just traveling. I would sit in bed at night just messaging people on Instagram saying, “Hey, can we catch up with you for a photo?” And I’d message 100 people and one person would get back to me,” Mitch says.

Statistics
The beauty in Instagram is not only in expanding the reach of your following, it allows you to collect important data about your audience.
You know where your followers are, you know how many followers you’ve got and what country they are in and with the right apps you can discover even more about your audience. This data is vital for future business and marketing decisions.

It’s all about the photo
Quality of the image- Instagram is purely visual so it only makes sense to invest in a good quality camera to get the results you want.
“Little things mean the difference between a good Instagram and a [beep] one,” Mitch explains.
The photos you take and share on Instagram and other social media play a huge role in defining your brand.
“You know you’ve got to appeal to who you’re trying to get your point across to. People don’t wanna see a whole [Beep] load of hashtags.
“It’s a lifestyle too. People want to follow a brand”

Creating a lifestyle for your brand

Through the images you share you are defining a lifestyle for your brand and this is what people want to follow, especially on Instagram.
“They want to enter into your world. So what can you come up with on your social media that represents your world, I suppose? And that’s what will sell, people buy it because they’re buying the lifestyle of that brand, and that’s all it is,” Mitch explains.

Bring on the help that you need Running your own business is a tough gig.
Instead of trying to do it all on your own, bring on the experts or help where needed.
“Bring on people into your business that can pick up the slack that you can’t do yourself.”
