Terrible, Thanks For Asking

A weekly Society, Culture and Personal Journals podcast featuring

You know how when someone asks "How are you?" you just say "Fine,” even if you’re totally dying inside, so everyone can go about their day? “Terrible, Thanks For Asking” is the opposite of that. Nora McInerny asks real people to share their complicated and honest feelings about how they really are. It’s sometimes sad, sometimes funny, and often both. From American Public Media.

After discovering this show, I doubled back to listen to every episode. I. Love. This. Podcast. The host, Nora McInerny, interviews people about the worst thing that's happened in their lives. For a show about grief, it's surprisingly fun? Nora's hosting style is witty, insightful, empathetic, and accepting. Yet she's also able to bring in humor, so despite the weight of the topics, the show itself is more reflective of life overall: it is bright and dark, heavy and light, amusing and devastating. I'm not sure if I'd call it a balance, but rather a mixture - a fruit salad rather than a smoothie, if you will - where there's enough room for all the feelings. I actually think listening to this show has made me a better podcast host, and I know it's made me a better person. It's coming back from its own season break soon, so now is a great time to scroll through the older episodes, try out one or two that interest you, and get listening!
So much compassion and heart. Nora is brave and funny and always kind.
This is a special podcast, the kind that you actually listen to while doing...nothing. From the host Nina to her guests and the personal stories they weave, I am mesmerized by the intimacy and shared experience. With each episode, I’m listening to a part of me that often gets ignored or forgotten. These guests open up in a way that I rarely even dig into myself and in so doing I learn a little more about what makes me “me.”
