It's finally time... to talk about the beginning... of heavy metal. We've covered hair metal, glam metal, stoner/doom metal, metal-core, and "nu" metal, but... where did it all come from? The answer to this question is different depending on who you ask, but the first time it broke into the mainstream was undoubtedly with Black Sabbath. Their sped up blues, distortion, and horror imagery, mixed with a working man's skepticism towards the free love movement. They grew up in post war Birmingham and the positive sound and message of that music didn't really represent their experience. While they were initially trying to formulate their sound, bassist Geezer Butler infamously remarked that it was "strange that people spend so much money to see scary movies," and then I'm assuming a giant lightbulb appeared in a thought bubble over both of their heads... and "Black Sabbath" was born. First just a title for the "most evil song ever written" (according to Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford), and eventually the title and theme of the rest of their discography... Their first album (self-titled) began the march toward crunchier songwriting and their second, Paranoid, made it clear that it was just the beginning of a completely new rock movement.
