punch man into 100. up where Gentry

1:30

1:32

2:45

world. the detailed that she is putting

2:47

into the story. she is putting into the very

2:49

interesting. we talked, yeah. it was a was amazing interview.

2:51

Echo is awesome. She's great. gonna we're gonna have

2:53

2:57

3:00

we'll have to have Echo back so

3:02

we can have a spoiler cast for

3:04

this one. to have echo back so we can

3:06

have a spoiler cast for this out of

3:08

her very being oozes out so cool

3:10

to talk to her it's so cool

3:12

about how much care and

3:14

inspiration was care and to the plate

3:16

with the creation of this

3:18

series play we were just talking

3:20

about this on this show. just you

3:23

like lore show you like to

3:25

dive into you legends and like

3:27

cross and myths like myths like It's

3:29

going to be to be cool you. you.

3:31

So definitely tune I'm your

3:33

host, host, Liam President. And back

3:36

from eating much much sweet

3:38

potato casserole. It's me, Lee

3:40

Murray. Murray. and moving from

3:42

one chair to another chair

3:44

to Alex's level. chair, it's Alex Lovell. And

3:46

we are we are here. see just how

3:48

to see just how powerful

3:50

the effect of anime really is.

3:53

is. Okay, on I know even though

3:55

you on break, even though

3:57

you guys got a Thanksgiving

3:59

episode from us. How'd everybody's holiday go?

4:01

holiday was great. I really did just

4:03

move from one chair to this chair. chair

4:05

to this chair. I sat most of the time. the

4:07

I was just, know, Thanksgiving you just

4:09

been. has just been, the

4:11

food, bro. the food. It's been been so

4:13

chill. so chill. I got to get a a

4:15

lot of rest before like like traveling.

4:17

So it's like, it's just kind of of worry. And

4:19

always so weird for me because

4:22

for me because like in my birthdays

4:24

a couple days after birthday is a couple days

4:26

after. So it's like, birthday party

4:28

office. Yeah. It's always like,

4:30

it's always kind of a, it's a

4:33

coin of phrase for the rest of

4:35

the song used by yeah, it's always

4:37

like it's always kind of He calls it

4:39

a coin a phrase limbo. been

4:41

used by Tom from cultaholic. He

4:43

calls it Crembo limbo So it's

4:45

like the weird time between Thanksgiving a

4:47

bunch of stuff it's just a bunch

4:49

of stuff that's just like swirling

4:51

and you don't know like what

4:53

stores are open What's happening like

4:55

it's yeah, it's weird But then

4:57

outside of that most of my

4:59

Thanksgiving was spent listening to the

5:01

new spent listening to yes, yes, yes. album.

5:03

Oh yes, yes, ruled my life

5:05

for the basically ruled my life for

5:08

the last week. What about you, you,

5:10

Leo? Uh, like my Thanksgiving? It was

5:12

it was pretty chill. I

5:14

mean. hung just hung out,

5:16

you know, with my dog. I

5:18

cooked a full Thanksgiving meal, that was

5:20

fun. fun. said in the group chat,

5:22

chat. Yeah, we meal picks in

5:24

the group chat. meal picks and cheese looked. chat.

5:27

Lee's Mac and cheese mine. I

5:30

would not not mine. it like it was

5:32

yours. It is that. Lee not claim. credit

5:34

full credit in the group chat

5:36

Listen, he's being shy, shy. not.

5:39

I I can't cook like that. Are you crazy? Are I mean,

5:41

I can cook. I mean I can cook not like that. it was

5:43

chill was thing is the thing is like some of

5:45

these like end of your for me are

5:47

getting me are getting as the years go

5:49

on years go think as you get older as

5:51

just like older it's just like yeah it's a just

5:53

I don't want to confront because here's

5:55

the thing like I was lame as

5:57

hell for like I lame as hell for Halloween is my

5:59

my holiday. I barely did anything.

6:02

No, I had like a chill

6:04

Thanksgiving. I need to like go

6:06

crazy for Christmas. I need to

6:08

get the rest of my end

6:10

of the year holidays out because

6:12

that's my favorite stretch of months.

6:14

Of course. You gotta, you gotta

6:16

rent, you gotta rent for Christmas.

6:18

I don't know, it's like we're

6:20

of the age now where we're

6:22

asking for socks for holidays and

6:24

that's practical and that's a sensible

6:26

gift. Yeah, that's just the next

6:28

evolution. Yeah, it's like, oh man,

6:30

I got socks and I don't

6:32

have to do anything. Man, this

6:34

is the best, the best. the

6:36

next evolution for you know you

6:38

know anyone watch arcane that was

6:40

my victor where he's like it's

6:42

the grand evolution sorry that's a

6:45

really bad victor if you've been

6:47

arcade over over the holiday like

6:49

I did you know No, I've

6:51

binged from and it is one

6:53

of the most incredible TV shows

6:55

I've ever. Oh really? Especially like,

6:57

because I know you're pretty like

6:59

horror suspense coded. It's very good.

7:01

So if you got Amazon Prime,

7:03

go ahead and fire it up.

7:05

All right, coming up next is

7:07

our interview with Echo Wu, creator

7:09

Gentry Trial versus the underworld. Stick

7:11

7:18

7:20

evening. I don't even need to say

7:22

his name. Mr. Bob Dylan! From the

7:25

director of Walk the Line and Ford

7:27

versus Ferrari. If anyone is going to

7:29

hold your attention on stage, you have

7:31

to kind of be a freak. And

7:33

starring Timothy Shalomé as Bob Dylan. Are

7:35

you a freak? Hope so. Inspired by

7:38

the true story. I want to know

7:40

which side he's on. Didn't you? They

7:42

just want me saying I'm blowing in

7:44

the wind for the rest of my

7:46

life. Bobby, what

7:48

do you want to be?

7:51

Whatever it is, they don't

7:53

want me to be. He

7:55

defied everyone. Turn it down!

7:58

Play it loud! To change

8:00

everything. Elvis. Timothy Shalomay, Edward

8:02

Norton, Elphanny, Monica Barbara. Make

8:05

some noise, BD. Track some

8:07

mud on a carpet. A

8:09

complete unknown. A complete unknown.

8:48

We are so happy to be

8:50

joined today here with Echo Wu,

8:53

the showrunner, writer, and director of

8:55

the brand-new animated series Gentry Chau

8:57

versus the underworld, which is about

8:59

a Chinese-American teen living in small

9:02

Texas town. We can kind of

9:04

relate here as Texas dwellers, who

9:06

must now fight an entire underworld's

9:08

worth of monsters while balancing the

9:10

horrors of high school. Welcome to

9:13

the Anime Effect Echo. We are

9:15

so happy to have you and

9:17

to chat with you. Yay, thank

9:19

you for having me. I'm a

9:22

big fan of this podcast. Oh,

9:24

really? Oh, my God. Come true.

9:26

Yeah. Oh, we have some amazing

9:28

guests and, you know, I'm on

9:30

a country role, like 24-7, so.

9:33

No, yeah, Sam, I'm pretty much

9:35

on crunchy roll at work and

9:37

off work at this point. Online

9:39

and offline. But yeah, that's so

9:42

sweet to hear. We have a

9:44

question that we're dying to hear

9:46

from you, that we like to

9:48

ask all of our guests, of

9:50

course. Since you said you watched

9:53

the podcast, you'll know what's coming.

9:55

We want to know what is

9:57

your gateway anime. So my gateway

9:59

anime, okay, it's a toss. I

10:02

have two during that time period.

10:04

And one, of course, you know,

10:06

is car captor Sakura, like a

10:08

elite, elite, you know, amazing. And

10:10

then the other one I was

10:13

watching was like this early 2000s,

10:15

like Canadian, American, Chinese production of

10:17

The Monkey King. If you remember

10:19

that, I vaguely remember that. All

10:22

right, Nishpole. So niche, it's like

10:24

barely anime, but it was like

10:26

in that anime style, but it

10:28

was very cool and it was

10:30

like the first serialized like epic

10:33

that I saw in an animated

10:35

series, so that was that was

10:37

pretty dope. Dude, that's sick. Yeah,

10:39

we'll have to check that out.

10:42

I'm always getting so many, like,

10:44

good recommendations from asking this question.

10:46

So I'm going to have to,

10:48

I'm going to go look it

10:50

up and then it'll be like,

10:53

memory unlocked, like I feel like

10:55

for some reason it makes me

10:57

think of the monkey's paw. Do

10:59

you know? Okay, so of course,

11:02

we have to start out by

11:04

talking about your new show, Gentry

11:06

Chauverts the underworld. It includes some

11:08

myth and folklore from around the

11:10

world, then it includes China, Africa,

11:13

Korea, and Texas. How did you

11:15

blend so many cultures? How did

11:17

you basically like take this multicultural

11:19

mythology? and blended together in the

11:22

show, but also kind of honoring

11:24

the origins of them as well

11:26

too. Yeah, so I was always

11:28

fascinated when I was growing up

11:30

with my friends and stuff. We

11:33

would talk about mythology and the

11:35

different aspects of like our heritage

11:37

and our ethnicity and stuff. And

11:39

you know, you find that there

11:42

are similarities in like food. you

11:44

know, everyone has a universal version

11:46

of like a dumpling and a

11:48

version of a noodle and stuff.

11:50

And so I found that that

11:53

was very similar in culture and

11:55

in mythology too. Like in Chinese

11:57

mythology and in Korean mythology and

11:59

in Japanese mythology too, there's some

12:02

of a deity living on the

12:04

moon that has to do with

12:06

like an immortal lixir or an

12:08

immortal pet bunny that has to

12:10

deal with like immortality and waves

12:13

and how that all like kind

12:15

of comes to fruition and you'll

12:17

see that across all spans of

12:19

the mythology across Asia too. There's

12:22

always some version of a demon

12:24

or ghost and spirits and the

12:26

underworld and they tend to like,

12:28

you know, like nine-tailed foxes, for

12:30

example, are in multiple different cultures

12:33

and dragon and things like that.

12:35

Yeah, exactly. And so I was

12:37

really interested in kind of molding

12:39

those kinds of things and it

12:41

felt very natural for all of

12:44

those mythologies cannot exist together and

12:46

so it came from there like

12:48

I am the most familiar with

12:50

mythologies that come from anime but

12:53

also in Chinese mythology and so

12:55

there was a lot of crossover

12:57

from that and so I think

12:59

it felt like, okay, if those

13:01

worlds existed in reality, then surely

13:04

like American lore and like South

13:06

American and, you know, African lore,

13:08

they all have to exist. And

13:10

because we were setting it in

13:13

Texas, we're like, okay, what are

13:15

the Texas, like the big Texas

13:17

lures? And we can talk about

13:19

this. Yeah. I mean, our next

13:21

question, you know, like we saw

13:24

big text. If you don't know

13:26

who that is, he's like the

13:28

overlord of the Texas State Fair,

13:30

he stands like super tall and

13:33

looms above the Texas State Fair.

13:35

He basically rules Texas for about

13:37

two months and then goes what?

13:39

Yeah, he tells you if your

13:41

soul is good or not. So

13:44

yeah, I mean, it is so

13:46

interesting because I think when I

13:48

was growing up in Texas, I

13:50

had a lot of things. I

13:53

thought were normal and then I

13:55

went to college out of state

13:57

and people were like oh no

13:59

that's not normal we don't have

14:01

a state pledge after the national

14:04

pledge you know like that you

14:06

know you're like we're the only

14:08

ones that do it that we

14:10

both have to honor the US

14:13

and we have to honor the

14:15

state of Texas. I didn't even

14:17

know Texas had a state pledge.

14:19

Because we like- No, yeah. I

14:21

learned that maybe in the last

14:24

two months or something like that,

14:26

that, you know, like when you

14:28

stand up and do the Pledge

14:30

of Allegiance at the beginning of

14:33

school, they say the Texas Pledge.

14:35

Yeah, crazy. Our eyes roll backwards

14:37

and like our eyes completely float

14:39

like two inches. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

14:41

And we're like, oh, honoring the

14:44

big text. Part of the pledge

14:46

is the honor of a big

14:48

text. As a Missouri kid, I

14:50

would know nothing about that. So,

14:53

yeah. For a show like this,

14:55

there has to be like a

14:57

lot of research that must go

14:59

into, you know, connecting all of

15:01

these different cultures together. What were

15:04

some of your, your other inspirations

15:06

for this story? You know, you

15:08

talked a little bit about, you

15:10

know, loving like magical girls, like

15:13

card, soccer, did any like magical

15:15

girl anime or any shows you

15:17

watch growing up, inspire any aspects

15:19

of this story? Because animation takes

15:21

so long it's like I had

15:24

a certain level of like influences

15:26

that I had in the beginning

15:28

of the show and as we

15:30

were writing and as we were

15:33

as I was watching other things

15:35

I started adapting like other influences

15:37

on the show so it's kind

15:39

of this like big melting pot

15:41

of of my own interests and

15:44

how that's been expanding and you

15:46

know consumption of that. But yeah

15:48

you mentioned magical girl anime that's

15:50

obviously very evident in the show.

15:53

There's also a bit of like

15:55

love triangle anime like we we

15:57

referenced a lot of final fantasy.

15:59

best, the best, the way they

16:01

handle this like will they want

16:04

they love trying to think was

16:06

there. The show in the show

16:08

Gentry and Kit referenced Naruto while

16:10

they're in the science lab and

16:13

they're like trying to figure out

16:15

what to name the frog and

16:17

so they're like arguing whether she's

16:19

a soccer or an edgy. It's

16:21

really cute. Yeah. And we look

16:24

at, you know, horror a lot

16:26

too. So we've referenced Junji Edo

16:28

quite a bit and we looked

16:30

at traditional like Japanese and 80s,

16:33

you know, Hong Kong horror a

16:35

lot too. So it wasn't just

16:37

above anime, but there's definitely a

16:39

lot of like small nods to

16:41

it. I think at some point

16:44

we have a one punch man

16:46

meme. pop up where Gentry just

16:48

turns into one punch man style

16:50

meme. Same with spy family. She

16:53

does a spy family smirk at

16:55

some point. Amazing. Yeah. That's

16:57

one of my favorite moments. So

16:59

what is it like, you know,

17:01

being able to take all of

17:03

this stuff that you love or

17:05

that you have loved? Like, and

17:07

just putting it into just one,

17:09

I don't want to say it's

17:11

like your masterwork, but putting it

17:13

into just a piece of, you

17:16

know, a medium or an art

17:18

form that you just love. Yeah,

17:20

like melting it all down into this.

17:22

Yeah. it was really stressful because

17:24

it sounds so much easier in

17:26

your head and it feels like

17:28

you know that moment of like

17:30

every like I I keep referencing this

17:32

meme of I think you should

17:34

leave where where he's like and

17:36

then there's gonna be this and

17:38

then all this comes in and

17:40

then we're gonna do this and

17:42

then a close-up shot of this and

17:45

then like that's how it feels

17:47

in my in my head but

17:49

really I think the the first

17:51

time I tried to do it

17:53

was through a playlist like I was

17:55

trying to figure out what's the

17:57

right vibe and what's the right

17:59

tone because what's one thing to

18:01

listen to teen romance you know

18:03

as a playlist or a Washington

18:05

romance? another thing to do horror. And

18:07

it's another thing to do like

18:09

these like big action fight sequences.

18:11

And so the first experiment that

18:13

I did for myself when I

18:15

was trying to meld all those things

18:18

together was to create a playlist

18:20

that. felt like it incorporated all

18:22

of those things. Like I wanted

18:24

the playlist to flow from, you

18:26

know, sappy 80s city pop to kind

18:28

of this high hip hop, like

18:30

high Chinese rap, like fast pace

18:32

Chinese rap, and then I. integrated

18:34

back over to, you know, like

18:36

this really spooky kind of Billy

18:38

Eilish-esque music. And then so doing that

18:41

back and forth, I was like,

18:43

oh, this is really encouraging because

18:45

I think if you can do

18:47

it in a playlist, you can

18:49

kind of do it in a show.

18:51

And because the show... Wow. Yeah,

18:53

and because of the show is

18:55

so heavily influenced by music and

18:57

so much of it is about

18:59

like trying to figure out what

19:01

the soundtrack to a teenager girl's life

19:03

is, that it ended up working

19:05

really well. Like we were able

19:07

to jump back and forth from

19:09

those genres pretty cool and like

19:11

very cleanly, you know. Wow, so you

19:14

basically were vision boarding with music.

19:16

Yeah, vision boarding with music is

19:18

a really great way to put

19:20

it. Like very early on when

19:22

we were storyboarding the show, we

19:24

had a songwriter Brian H. Kim, who

19:26

came on, which isn't very typical

19:28

for shows to have their composers

19:30

come on during pre-production, but Because

19:32

music was so integral into the

19:34

show we had him come on and

19:36

start making demos so that the

19:38

storyboard artists and the editors and

19:40

everyone can Time the song to

19:43

the animatic and that was like

19:45

a really cool process to see

19:47

Yeah, I don't think I've ever heard

19:49

of that kind of processing like

19:51

that that's really unique and I

19:53

think when people watch the show

19:55

they'll see that that kind of

19:57

come out Yeah, I think so. I

19:59

feel like it's funny when you

20:01

were saying that, like the first,

20:03

like two things that kind of

20:05

came to mind was how like,

20:07

integral Scott was, like, as far

20:09

as, having, like, the whole, like, indie

20:12

rock vibe, and then, like, I

20:14

don't know if you guys have

20:16

seen it, but Nick and Nora's

20:18

playlist, like, it kind of, like,

20:20

maybe that kind of vibe as well,

20:22

too, like, like, I like when

20:24

music can be such a, an

20:26

integral part of a production. Like,

20:28

you know, one of my favorite

20:30

games ever is Deaf Jam, Fight

20:32

for New York. Well, Waxman took about

20:34

that later. But that game is

20:36

built off the fact that, you

20:38

know, music is a core part

20:40

of that video game. So, you

20:42

know, having, you said you had your

20:45

your composer come in a pre-production

20:47

to help time and stuff out.

20:49

Like, that's, that sounds incredible, but

20:51

also stressful, but also stressful. Usually

20:53

it is too many cooks and

20:55

there are like of course there were

20:57

ideas we were like that didn't

20:59

work like at one point I

21:01

think Gentry puts on headphones and

21:03

like she listens to her music

21:05

right before she goes into a fight

21:08

and at that point we're like

21:10

oh that's that might be too

21:12

meta like that's a nod that

21:14

we don't need to do like

21:16

that's just a beat that we

21:18

don't need to have like we need

21:20

to make it feel so organic

21:22

that she just like runs into

21:24

battle and everything so I think

21:26

there were ideas that eventually got

21:28

thrown out, but honestly the show was

21:30

so specific. Like I made sure

21:32

that the show felt totally very

21:34

specific in the very beginning, that

21:36

it didn't feel, you know, it

21:38

wouldn't feel like we were just

21:40

like throwing spaghetti at the wall, see

21:43

what sticks. It felt like those

21:45

were really intentional songs that we

21:47

picked and very intentional moments that

21:49

we picked to choreograph to, so

21:51

that was all really awesome. And I

21:53

have to say, because you mentioned

21:55

I think you should leave. Now

21:57

in my mind I'm just thinking

21:59

of a segment based off the

22:01

night the skeletons came to life.

22:03

know that sketch or he's like, that

22:05

was an eye, the skilled just

22:07

came to laugh. From that show,

22:10

anyway. Do you just live on,

22:12

I think you should leave sketches

22:14

like every night before bed? Yeah. And

22:16

also Detroiters, which I think is

22:18

created by the same people. Oh

22:20

my God, I've been watching Detroiters.

22:22

It is so funny. It's so

22:24

funny, but there's so many moments

22:26

where I'm like, the way that they

22:28

do things is like, sometimes I'm

22:30

like, man, I feel so bad

22:32

for this character that they like,

22:34

like the guy that they hit

22:36

with their car. What is the actor

22:39

that plays Ted Lasso? You know

22:41

what I'm talking about? Yes, I

22:43

know, I can't remember his name.

22:45

Is it Jason Sadiq? Is that

22:47

one? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And they set

22:49

off like a chain of events

22:51

that ruined his life, like hitting

22:53

him with a car, like putting

22:55

a chip bag over his head

22:57

and abandoning him on the side

22:59

of the road. Oh my God, okay.

23:01

I feel like I need to

23:03

watch a show. Yeah. I love

23:05

it so much. So surrounding things

23:07

back, pulling things in. So of

23:09

course, you know, getting a show made,

23:12

that's a monumental thing. It is

23:14

no easy feat. What were the

23:16

biggest challenges you faced when you

23:18

were getting Gentry Chow versus the

23:20

underworld off the ground? And, you

23:22

know, what was the pushback? Like, how

23:24

did you overcome those challenges? Yes,

23:26

I will answer this question in

23:28

a very respectful way and not

23:30

to get in trouble, but I

23:32

think that is, you know, like it,

23:35

so the challenges were that we

23:37

made a very ambitious show, like

23:39

it had all of these characters

23:41

in it, it had all of

23:43

these beautiful backgrounds and designs in

23:45

it, and we had music that we

23:47

wanted to put soundtrack to, like

23:49

needle drop that we wanted to

23:51

include. and we wanted like this

23:53

this this and that you know

23:55

so the reality of it is that

23:57

you at the end of the

23:59

day have to make it all

24:01

work and it has to be

24:03

turned in on time. I didn't

24:05

have like the biggest budget in

24:07

the world for the show like it

24:10

wasn't You know that kind of

24:12

show so I would say that

24:14

like the biggest thing is kind

24:16

of just making sure that we

24:18

it felt very cohesive with with the

24:20

big ambitions that we had, we

24:22

had to scale down certain things

24:24

to make it fit and the

24:26

biggest thing was just like making

24:28

sure that that story worked first,

24:30

I think, like everything else, all the

24:32

flashiness, all of the effects and

24:34

the music and all of that

24:37

is not really going to do

24:39

anything for you if the story

24:41

doesn't come through first. And so we

24:43

were always trying to make sure

24:45

that those characters always really shine,

24:47

you know, there wasn't too overshadowing.

24:49

There was in the very beginning,

24:51

Ed, the main character Ed, who

24:53

was played by Bo and Yang, he

24:55

did such a good job reading

24:57

for his lines and reading for

24:59

his jokes that... you know, everyone

25:01

was like, can we add more

25:03

Bo and Yang lines? Like, can we,

25:06

this nomin is so sad, can

25:08

we add more headlines to that?

25:10

And then it just became like

25:12

the edge show at one point,

25:14

like when we're working on the

25:16

pilot, and so we have to dial

25:18

that back and kind of look

25:20

at the pieces that we had

25:22

and be like, what is the

25:24

most important thing to tell right

25:26

now, like even though it might involve

25:28

darker themes about gender coming back

25:30

to this world, like we need

25:32

to really let that shine and

25:34

let that sit and just trust,

25:36

you know, that it's gonna cook,

25:38

that storyline. So I think that was

25:41

really important to see it through

25:43

and see how the story kind

25:45

of really shines on its own.

25:47

Yeah, and as a creator again,

25:49

like, how do you really advocate for

25:51

yourself in that way? Like, how

25:53

do you, you know, really put

25:55

know like I really think this

25:57

idea is going to work even

25:59

if you know you said like

26:01

the budget had limitations there were other

26:04

pushbacks right how do you you

26:06

know continue to I guess like

26:08

sell your idea this is your

26:10

baby and you still keep as

26:12

much of it as you can but

26:14

you know that like for the

26:16

sake of it you know getting

26:18

on air you have to like

26:20

sacrifice yeah everything is going to

26:22

get trim naturally but yeah I

26:24

mean it really does feel like that

26:26

moment in the king's speech go

26:28

up on a podium and just

26:30

like be like this is why

26:32

I believe in the show and

26:34

there's so many moments where you have

26:37

to do that in front of

26:39

the network and you in front

26:41

of the crew and I'm like

26:43

just rally people together and that's

26:45

not an easy thing to do

26:47

I won't lie like there were times

26:49

where I have to go up

26:51

and be like no this is

26:53

exactly what we want like this

26:55

is you're you're putting too much

26:57

emphasis on the comedy or you're putting

26:59

too much emphasis on like people

27:01

not getting it and they're just

27:04

gonna get it and you just

27:06

you just kind of have to

27:08

put faith in that at the end

27:10

of the day you want to

27:12

make sure it feels really authentic

27:14

and that was my North Star

27:16

like that was like this is

27:18

something that I think is really

27:20

emotional this is something I think is

27:22

and you just want to trust

27:24

your gut in that way. You

27:26

want to make sure that like

27:28

you trust that other people are

27:30

going to like that too. And then

27:33

at the end of the day,

27:35

like they do great. They don't.

27:37

the show still got aired and

27:39

ha ha. We made the thing

27:41

and went out and then like

27:43

the art is for the audience to

27:45

do with what they will. Yeah,

27:47

that's and I feel like that's

27:49

kind of a tough thing to

27:51

deal with too is like once

27:53

you create something and putting out like

27:55

it's it's almost technically not yours

27:57

anymore. So you have to like

27:59

so you have to trust that

28:01

the vision that you had for

28:03

it that you're giving to people

28:05

people people see it the same way.

28:08

a fraction of how you created

28:10

it and they attached to just

28:12

that that fraction of it. Gentry

28:14

trial like you know anime has

28:16

shares a lot of universal themes but

28:18

can also be very fantastical at

28:20

the same time. So you talked

28:22

to you just talked a lot

28:24

about keeping the show as authentic

28:26

as possible but what is it

28:28

like to make sure that this show

28:31

is grounded through all of the

28:33

fantastical like the demon fighting the

28:35

magic the the lure yeah I

28:37

think it so we at the

28:39

very beginning had a saying in the

28:41

writer's room and it was and

28:43

sometimes finding yourself identity is like

28:45

coming face to face with your

28:47

own demons and that's putting a

28:49

theme first and putting a world-building

28:51

element second and the way I mean

28:53

it is by you know saying

28:55

that gentry how her journey is

28:57

that she is trying to find

28:59

her own self-identity. in the very

29:01

beginning we knew that we wanted to

29:04

put that storyline on the back

29:06

of a love triangle on a

29:08

skeleton of a blood triangle and

29:10

that was about making it feel

29:12

like if I was a teenage

29:14

girl and I had these powers I

29:16

don't think I would be like

29:18

Oh yeah, I have all these

29:20

powers and I'm going to show

29:22

everyone who I am now with

29:24

this newfound power. Like I would be

29:26

like, oh no. I did not

29:28

want these powers and now I'm

29:31

going to be like embarrassed by

29:33

them and I'm going to be

29:35

noticed in all the wrong ways

29:37

that I don't want to be noticed

29:39

by. And that's kind of the.

29:41

the emotion of a teenage girl,

29:43

like that's the feeling that I

29:45

wanted us to play with for

29:47

the most part. And so doing that

29:49

uncovered a lot of other things

29:51

like, okay, well, she would want

29:53

to know where those powers come

29:55

from, right? And that dives into

29:57

a theme about family secrets and

29:59

self. in the sense of

30:02

intergenerational trauma and what are the

30:04

traumas that your family is bringing

30:06

on to what are the expectations

30:08

that your family is bringing on

30:10

and making you do and what

30:12

are the expectations of yourself and

30:14

what is the the thing that

30:17

you want to do and so

30:19

that's the constant battle and so

30:21

we again to just throw it

30:23

back to the love triangle line

30:25

that's what the two boys represent

30:27

in the show. One character is

30:29

like this grounded down-to-earth all-American sage-harmer

30:32

boy yeah and then there's this

30:34

other boy who's kind of this

30:36

very alluring like all you know

30:38

seducturous kind of the wild card

30:40

the dark the dark and brooding

30:42

edge lord that says I'm you

30:44

know you without these powers we

30:46

could be perfect like that's your

30:49

dream world so we made sure

30:51

that that felt very real, like

30:53

it's emotions first, it's that storyline

30:55

first of like, this is all

30:57

what's gonna motivate Gentry, and then

30:59

along the way, she's probably gonna

31:01

fight some monsters, you know, like

31:04

that was kind of what we

31:06

thought. one of the benefits of

31:08

animation and one of the cool

31:10

things about animation is how visual

31:12

the storytelling can get. And so

31:14

we took that quite literally and

31:16

we made sure that it felt

31:19

like we were viewing this world

31:21

even though we recognized that it's

31:23

Texas and we recognized like the

31:25

neighborhoods and stuff. We're viewing it

31:27

through Gentry's lens and I mean

31:29

that in a way of like

31:31

as a teenage girl you have

31:34

certain cones of references like anime

31:36

is one of them obviously another

31:38

one is team dramas the other

31:40

one is your Spotify playlist like

31:42

you have so many things that

31:44

you go through your cone of

31:46

reference and you start to integrate

31:49

them so we did that in

31:51

the storytelling visually too like I

31:53

already mentioned the soundscape and the

31:55

track list and the playlist of

31:57

the show is all songs that

31:59

Jennifer would want to listen to

32:01

so we have original music on

32:03

the show but we also have

32:06

these needle drops of like Sizza

32:08

and Vince Staples and New jeans

32:10

like we have that that kind

32:12

of highlights her show like yeah

32:14

highlights her going out going her

32:16

throughout her day but we also

32:18

have like when she meets a

32:21

boy for the very first time

32:23

it's shot like a K drama

32:25

where there's like lots of lights

32:27

and bouquet you know like flaring

32:29

up or when she's about to

32:31

do a cool fight sequence it's

32:33

like this shot like a music

32:36

video where it's like times of

32:38

the beats and everything so that's

32:40

cool There are a lot of

32:42

references that we try to just

32:44

make so authentic to a teenage

32:46

girl into Gentry's experience that I

32:48

think kind of not only showcases

32:51

that in the storytelling, but also

32:53

showcases that in a visual way

32:55

too. Yeah, and when you are

32:57

like a teenager, especially like a

32:59

teenage girl, like that's how life

33:01

actually feels like totally there's so

33:03

many emotions and you know, like,

33:05

yeah, so it's it's super cool

33:08

to like see that play out

33:10

in like the artistic direction like

33:12

you were saying. Yeah, I think

33:14

that you know, we all have

33:16

had that collective experience of like

33:18

being on the back of a

33:20

bus and plugging in your headphones

33:23

and like listening to the song

33:25

and like pretending you're in a

33:27

music video while like the bus

33:29

is driving you home. Yeah. I

33:31

think it's it's literally taking that

33:33

feeling and expanding it into an

33:35

animated series. That's perfect. Yeah, that's

33:38

the elevator pitch right there. Basically.

33:40

This was amazing. We want to

33:42

thank you for joining us today.

33:44

It was so awesome. Once the

33:46

show was off and running, we'll

33:48

have to have you back. Yeah.

33:50

Once I watched the trailer for

33:53

the show, I was like, yeah,

33:55

this is for me. But this

33:57

is also coming from a guy

33:59

that like, that grew up. just

34:01

loving animation like in almost like

34:03

every facet. So I'm like totally

34:05

really really excited to to see

34:08

when new animation enters the space.

34:10

But Gen Tree Child verse the

34:12

underworld is out now on Netflix.

34:14

Please check it out. I

34:16

already said I'm excited to watch it.

34:19

I'm going to watch it. I'm going

34:21

to binge it the first weekend and

34:23

then we will have to have you

34:25

back. Can you give us some plugs

34:27

and let us know, you know, what

34:29

else to watch out for for the

34:32

fans at home? Watch out for, obviously,

34:34

watch the show on December 5th. Preorder

34:36

the vinyl because we're doing a decker's

34:38

going to be a vinyl. Yes, there

34:40

will be a vinyl to make sure

34:42

you pre-order that. And you know what

34:44

like watch all your favorite people on

34:47

the show host endless content from it

34:49

like that's that's really it. Oh and

34:51

I'm in it watch out for that.

34:53

For sure well it was such again

34:55

such a pleasure to have you on

34:57

today we hope to have you on

34:59

again to talk more about the show.

35:02

Yes, absolutely. Yeah, thank you again. Thank

35:04

you so much. This is great. Thank

35:06

you. This

35:12

episode is brought to you by

35:15

Allstate. Some people just know they

35:17

could save hundreds on car insurance

35:19

by checking Allstate first, like you

35:21

know to check the date of

35:23

the big game first before you

35:25

accidentally buy tickets on your 20th

35:27

wedding anniversary and have to spend

35:29

the next wedding anniversary and have

35:31

to spend the next 20 years

35:33

of your marriage making up for

35:35

it. Yeah, checking first is smart.

35:37

So check Allstate Allstate Allstate First

35:39

and Casualty Insurance Company and Affiliates

35:42

Northbrook Illinois. Critics are celebrating presumed

35:44

innocent. Can you take me through

35:46

that night again? With Variety calling

35:48

it brilliant. I betrayed my family,

35:50

but I would never have hurt

35:52

her. It's a sad day when

35:54

a public servant is accused of

35:56

such a heinous crime. Entertainment Weekly

35:58

praises the impeccable ensemble. the mysteries?

36:00

It's a question everyone's asking. And

36:02

Pace calls to Jake Jillenhall, brilliant.

36:04

I did not kill her. From

36:06

executive producers David E. Kelly and

36:09

J.J. Abrams. Presumed innocent. Now streaming

36:11

on Apple TV Plus. I

36:13

love Echo. That was a great

36:15

conversation. I can't wait to have

36:17

her back on to talk even

36:19

more about, you know, the show's

36:21

going to launch. I just want

36:23

to like dive into it and

36:25

I'll probably have a million more

36:27

questions to ask her because it's

36:30

right of my alley, honestly. I

36:32

love Laura. I've got to the

36:34

point where like when animated shows

36:36

that I really like, I'm like,

36:38

let me not write a thesis

36:40

on this because there's some questions

36:42

that I will just never get

36:44

answered. But that's why our line

36:46

of work is so cool, because

36:48

it's like, oh, I have questions,

36:50

let me chat with the creator.

36:52

Yeah, no big deal. Let me

36:54

ring her off. So I'm super

36:56

excited to watch the show, everybody

36:58

else go do that as well.

37:00

But now, it is time. For

37:02

the recommendations. Recommendations. All right, Charles.

37:04

Charles. Hey Charles. You know Charles.

37:06

Not including stage shows, is there

37:08

a musical anime? Oh, I, this

37:10

is the perfect question for me.

37:12

First of all, because Charles is

37:14

one of my names, so I

37:16

was like, was that right this?

37:18

Was this mean? Was this mean,

37:20

did I do this? Wait, what

37:22

do you mean Charles is one

37:24

of your name? Like your middle

37:26

name? Oh, you know, how names

37:28

work? Yeah. I thought you were

37:30

to sing like aliases. I'm like,

37:32

like, club penguin got a screen

37:34

name, you know. But I think

37:36

I've made it clear on my

37:38

visits that music is very much

37:40

one of my things here and

37:42

outside of here. And I've also

37:44

made it a thing where there's

37:46

a recommendation question I answer it

37:48

with two things because I have

37:51

to cop out. Just how we

37:53

go. In purely like musical terms,

37:55

I would say one piece film

37:57

read is probably the closest you're

37:59

going to get. is so

38:01

good. It's so good. It's like so

38:03

good. Like, yeah. So good to the

38:05

point where I have irresponsibly looked up

38:08

ways to go see Otto on tour.

38:10

Yeah. Because it's so power, power. How

38:12

much money? Yeah, I want to need

38:15

to spend without going dangerously in the

38:17

debt. Yeah. How much of a cruise

38:19

RVs cost? And how can I get

38:22

there? But the other side of this

38:24

that is an anime that is musical,

38:26

the works of Shinitro Watanabe, I mean,

38:29

they just, they hit every time, whether

38:31

it's bebop, whether it's samurai, shampoo, whether

38:33

it's Terran resonance, the genres that are

38:36

covered in all of his works are

38:38

just delightful and you get something new.

38:40

every time and you can rewatch them

38:43

over and over again. You can not

38:45

watch them and just listen to the

38:47

music and be fine. So if that

38:49

is what you're looking for, I would

38:52

highly recommend doing a deep dive into

38:54

the other works of Watanabe for sure,

38:56

which you may not have seen for

38:59

sure. Um, what do I have for

39:01

this one? Afro samurai is, it comes

39:03

to mind, like I talk about the

39:06

show, I talk about the show quite

39:08

a bit. Yeah. But it's very much

39:10

rooted in hip hop culture, more so

39:13

because like the Rizza from Wootankland was

39:15

really involved in making the soundtrack and

39:17

the soundscape for. The Rizzler. No. Sorry.

39:20

I felt the brain rot already. Which

39:22

is, which is, we found out the

39:24

Oxford University word in the ears, brain

39:27

rot. That's awesome. But yeah, Afro samurai,

39:29

like, I think it's like, I know

39:31

I've told the story on the pot

39:33

before, but that was like the first

39:36

anime soundtrack that I like, went and

39:38

like, sought out like it was a

39:40

journey especially because like at that time

39:43

a lot of stores starting to pull

39:45

physical media and I was like I

39:47

have to I have to go find

39:50

this I have to go find this

39:52

and it's probably like still to this

39:54

day one of my favorite soundtracks for

39:57

sure and in another really quick cyberpunk

39:59

edge runners incredible, incredible,

40:01

incredible, incredible sounds right. I mean, just

40:03

the, the, the op with Franz Ferdinand,

40:05

like, says enough, like, it just, like,

40:08

it's amazing. That one's not super music

40:10

coded per se, like, you know, it's

40:12

just got a good soundtrack. It's just

40:14

got a good soundtrack to it that

40:16

really drives the story. Yeah, we actually

40:19

did an interview with Johnny from the

40:21

band Health who had a song on

40:23

in the series and in the game

40:25

right after it was one anime the

40:27

year. I guess it was two years

40:30

ago, where he talks about the journey

40:32

of being a fan of anime to

40:34

being in anime. And it's really cool.

40:36

So check it out on crunch rule

40:38

news. Shame is self-plug. I mean and

40:41

like and I also think I measure

40:43

that by like if the music is

40:45

good enough in a show to where

40:47

I'm like I have to go buy

40:49

the soundtrack like I have to go

40:52

find it like whether CD or vinyl

40:54

like I have to own it physically

40:56

like Edge Runners B-bop Afroso like I

40:58

bought all of those like because the

41:00

music is incredible. So As

41:03

we all know, I

41:05

am a theater kid.

41:07

A long time there

41:09

again. That's a little

41:11

Isaac Menelli moment. But

41:14

okay, so I feel

41:17

a personal attachment to this question

41:19

because I have a large hole

41:21

in my heart the size of

41:23

an anime musical because there aren't

41:25

very many. In fact I couldn't

41:28

really think of any as far

41:30

as like breaking out into song

41:32

like random numbers stuff like that

41:34

I truly can't think of any.

41:36

However the closest you're probably going

41:39

to get and the closest like

41:41

attachment to that genre and style

41:43

that you're going to get and

41:45

have like a good amount of

41:47

content for is idle anime. Yeah.

41:50

Of course. Yeah. Because they typically

41:52

have like maybe one or two

41:54

original songs per episode. I know

41:56

for like Live, they have like

41:58

actual live shows that you can

42:01

go to like concerts and stuff.

42:03

For Oshinoko, season two, it actually

42:05

takes place like the characters are

42:07

actors and they are cast in

42:09

a stage adaptation. Oh wow. So

42:12

you base, but that's, that's not

42:14

a musical though. I think it's

42:16

just like a straight play. So

42:18

that would be my suggestion is

42:20

try to break into some idol

42:23

anime. You know, I think the

42:25

song from Oshinoko was like, one

42:28

of the top performing anime songs

42:30

of the year. Yeah, the biggest

42:32

song in the world. Yeah, it's

42:34

insane. Yeah. And yeah, so check

42:36

that out. I think and there

42:38

are a lot of idol shows,

42:41

not to mention, like, there's a

42:43

lot. Just like. shows that revolve

42:45

around music, like Kayon and Givin

42:47

and, you know, yeah, Bocheter Rock,

42:49

we're like, the characters are creating

42:51

music. I do wish that they

42:54

would lean into like a musical

42:56

thing because like we see the

42:58

success of shows like Hasben Hotel

43:00

that has like this huge cult

43:02

following. That's because I feel like

43:04

the power of animation and the

43:07

power of like theater musicals. like

43:09

one combined they're just like a

43:11

supernova like I feel like they

43:13

it's just such a delicious combination

43:15

like we grew up watching like

43:17

Disney. I think Disney proved that

43:19

formula like to be very very

43:22

very very very very successful even

43:24

to this day like a lot

43:26

of their their animated films you

43:28

know barring a couple are very

43:30

And they're never as fun when

43:32

they're not a musical. Like some

43:35

of them is even like, you're

43:37

like, oh, there's no songs? Oh.

43:39

I'll find a different one. Yeah,

43:41

I'm gonna go watch something else.

43:43

Yeah. That's kind of like, just

43:45

a side-handed. Like, Lee Low and

43:48

Stitch is one of my favorite

43:50

Disney movies like ever. And the

43:52

live action is coming up. I'm

43:54

not about. wrong, it feels wrong.

43:56

Also topical, there's a movie out

43:58

in theaters right now that is

44:01

a musical, that is doing very

44:03

well. Wicked, I haven't seen it

44:05

yet, because I know you're not

44:07

supposed to sing in the theater,

44:09

and I don't know the words,

44:11

but I was going to do

44:13

it anyway. But you're not supposed

44:16

to do that. Alex is going

44:18

to be that guy. He's going

44:20

to be that guy. I couldn't

44:22

shut up about Wicked earlier today.

44:24

I went with a whole group

44:26

of our co-workers to go see

44:29

it. We had, like, uh, Santa

44:31

Mark does like advance ticket nights.

44:33

So we went and saw it

44:35

last week. It was very fun.

44:37

All right, looks like we got

44:39

some additional recommendations to throw at

44:42

you guys. First one is from

44:44

Teresa from our question form. I

44:46

love Kakurio, bed and breakfast for

44:48

spirits. This seems wholesome. Yeah, it

44:50

seems like it'll be relaxing, very

44:52

refreshing. Hopefully it's not something that

44:54

involves truck coon and you get

44:57

to, yeah. I see neckos. Oh

44:59

my god. Next one is from

45:01

David, also via question form. Black

45:03

Clover, sort out online. That time

45:05

I got reincarnated as a slime.

45:07

Michelle Kuttense. So they're

45:10

all peak. And I would agree, to

45:12

a degree. Someone likes an East Akai

45:14

moment as well. Well, I guess we

45:16

did have a debate on whether Sword

45:18

Art Online. And also Black Clover is

45:20

not. Black Clover is not. But slime

45:22

in the showcase, I definitely are. So

45:24

two East Akai buttons, out of four.

45:26

Wait, is it sitting there? I can't

45:28

see it over the left out. Yeah,

45:31

give it a little, yeah. Hard to

45:33

argue with that. Same, same, same. All

45:35

right. Now to

45:37

the second portion of our program,

45:39

it's the mailbag. Open it up.

45:42

Hot and fresh. We got the

45:44

mail, you guys. I thought that

45:46

was gonna be a song. I

45:49

thought you're about to start. There's

45:51

another year. Yeah. I'm still waiting

45:53

for that Invisible Mailman to walk

45:56

in with the bag. Here are

45:58

your letters. I'm not Marco from

46:00

our question form. are you? Who's

46:03

a real Marco? Polo. We've seen

46:05

some sports anime go mainstream that

46:07

follow soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc. What

46:10

sport do you think would be

46:12

a great one to make into

46:14

an anime that could take over?

46:17

Well they already did ping pong

46:19

which to me is so Awesome.

46:21

Yeah. That's so epic. Like, this

46:24

is a perfect time for them

46:26

to remake I Shield 21. That

46:28

was like, yeah. This is the,

46:31

so it's a, it's a football,

46:33

so like, I think, football or

46:35

soccer? American, America, football. So I,

46:38

like, I Shield is amazing. And

46:40

I think it came at a

46:42

time, like, when it got animated

46:45

the first time, one, I believe

46:47

it wasn't finished when the animation

46:49

was going on. But then, I

46:52

think it was also too early, like

46:55

even though we've gotten like slam dunk

46:57

and like Prince of Tennis and stuff

46:59

before that. It just wasn't the right

47:02

time. So I think if I Shield

47:04

came out in the sports anime climate

47:06

that we're in right now, I think

47:08

it would do gangbusters. I would actually

47:11

like to see them kind of dive

47:13

back into some wrestling anime. Like I

47:15

know they've... They've had a couple, like

47:18

Tiger Mass W, like there's there was

47:20

a Tiger Mass series before that too,

47:22

but it's also very niche. And then

47:24

I know the Ultimate Muscle just came

47:27

back, but I still feel like it

47:29

hasn't. There's still like a, there's still

47:31

something not quite there that it hasn't

47:33

like. That hurdle hasn't been jumped yet.

47:36

So those are my two, for sure.

47:38

All comedies, right? All the wrestling anime

47:40

are kind of common. Ultimate Muscle is

47:43

a little more on the comedic side.

47:45

And it's weird because it's like, because

47:47

wrestling at its core is very comedic.

47:49

Right. It has sense of humor, yeah.

47:52

But then at the same time, like

47:54

I feel like it doesn't really match,

47:56

you know, kind of some of the

47:58

serious like plot points with wrestling. And

48:01

it just, yeah, it did okay, but

48:03

I think it also was like, probably

48:05

not as popular state-side, because Tiger Mask

48:08

is a legacy, like, New Japan character,

48:10

and it's like a mask that gets

48:12

passed on to like different wrestlers, and

48:14

they play that character, and that's very

48:17

nuanced. So I think if there was

48:19

something that was a little more. geared

48:21

towards like the American style of wrestling,

48:24

but like maybe have some sensibilities from

48:26

like the other like foreign promotions I

48:28

think that could work Yeah, and it

48:30

would go well with the storytellers that

48:33

that tie into American wrestling where it's

48:35

the pageantry Yeah, exactly the play I

48:37

mean it's kind of Taylor made for

48:39

a show for sure. It is a

48:42

show. wrestling is just soap opera for

48:44

men. So it's like, that's literally where

48:46

we are, not saying it's men and

48:49

only watch it. But like that's how

48:51

it's been described for a really long

48:53

time is that it's soap opera for

48:55

men. So I think it's, I think

48:58

it would be, it would be time

49:00

for like an anime like that to

49:02

come up. I was gonna say curling

49:05

just to troll. Yeah, there's a... One

49:07

is called sweep, one is called orange

49:09

delivery. But so

49:11

yeah, it exists. Maybe something, I don't

49:13

know, what's like a really like crazy

49:15

out there sport? I don't see. Bob

49:18

sledding? It exists, but I don't, what

49:20

does it need to go over the

49:22

edge and get people hypes on curling?

49:24

Yeah. Like I was thinking in no

49:26

slight against Prince of Tennis at all,

49:28

but like I think we're primed for

49:30

another extreme kind of tennis. I think

49:32

so. I think so. I mean even

49:35

like hockey, there's a hockey manga that's

49:37

been going on for about a year

49:39

called Dogs Red. So maybe this is

49:41

kind of the time that you know

49:43

we see kind of like hockey kind

49:45

of make its its way into the

49:47

sports animates like guys. So yeah, I

49:49

think there's a couple options on the

49:52

table there. Like I don't think there's

49:54

really any like weird ones. Give me

49:56

break on the anime. No! Body building

49:58

would be one too. I was just

50:00

going to say, I literally was like,

50:02

I didn't want to interrupt you so

50:04

I quit talking but I was going

50:06

to say, where's the body building one?

50:09

Yeah. There's a... Or like weightlifting. Like

50:11

that would be crazy because that's a

50:13

fun Olympic sport. I don't remember the

50:15

name of the show that's on Netflix,

50:17

but there's like a like a... I

50:19

think it's a Japanese show where it's

50:21

like a... They follow like a group

50:24

of like Japanese bodybuilders like this. It's

50:26

God. I don't remember what it's called,

50:28

but it reminds me of like, Mom

50:30

Psycho, like body improvement. So I think,

50:32

yeah, space for that. I would say

50:34

like professional shooting, but that's pretty much.

50:36

any anime with a weapon like, it's

50:38

all like competitive shooting like impossible shots

50:41

like in and being able to dodge

50:43

bullets and stuff like liquor or streak

50:45

oil. Well, thank you so much for

50:47

writing in I'm not Marco, but if

50:49

you guys want to send us a

50:51

question or comment or recommendation, a couple

50:53

ways you can do it. Spotify. Uh-huh.

50:55

Apple music. The YouTube. The YouTube. And

50:58

then the telegram. Right. A telegram. A

51:00

pigeon. But then also our handy to

51:02

any question form. So it's got dot

51:04

C-R slash anime questions. Again, that is

51:06

GOT.C-R slash anime question. Yes. And not

51:08

the anime effect question. Please. No. It

51:10

will just anime. It will not work

51:12

for you if you put the. Well,

51:15

I think that's. everything for today. This

51:17

is a fun episode. I'm still going

51:19

to be thinking about these sports for

51:21

a while. I know, I'd rack my

51:23

brain with it. Because I know there's

51:25

a sport there that hasn't been done

51:27

that we're missing. And I'm going to

51:29

come on the show when I get

51:32

back in a couple of weeks and

51:34

be like, yes, this one. And then

51:36

everybody's going to just like, we're not

51:38

talking about it. Or even just like

51:40

some experience. Like, I think that's always.

51:42

time for, unfortunately,

51:44
