First the good. I really like Woodrow as a foil to Myrick. He's a fun presence. I like a lot of the world building. I even like that occasionally it seemed like the writers knew Myrick was a complete idiot and had to learn to be less of one.But not quickly enough to overcome the sexism that seems deeply embedded in Myrick's worldview and the show itself. Around season 5, he slut shames sex workers, seemingly incapably of separating what is truly evil about prostitution (the exploitation, the slavery) from the people who either choose or are forced into it. The show creates a character that is the victim of gang rape and threatens Alannah with the same, just so it can raise the stakes such that Myrick can be a big damn hero when he rescues her. That character fades away once she's served her sole purpose of pushing for the big damn romance to happen. There's also an uncomfortable preoccupation with Alannah's virginity. Shudder. The last straw was in Season 7, as he is letting down a girl who has a crush on him, he says and I quote, "Learn to control your spontaneous reflex of displaying your emotions physically ... or else you may awake to one day find you've turned a lady into a whore." Or how about this line "One of the few things you can keep about your original being is your virtue." Maybe someday Myrick learns that a woman's worth is not in what's between her legs or how she chooses to wield her sexual autonomy. And that so long as no one is harmed or coerced, none of this is any man's business, especially one who's also had the rank hypocrisy to mention that he's skilled BECAUSE he has bedded many women. (To be fair, Myrick has enough self loathing, he probably thinks he's corrupted because of his promiscuity.) But I've invested in listening to this show for 7 seasons in the hope that Myrick would finally get a clue and I'm done. I have no faith that the show's course will be righted or that Myrick will ever learn to respect women as a whole.
Great story telling, music, and voice acting. If you like dramas and vampires, you’ll love this series!
