Derek Black, a graduate student in history who focuses on the early Middle ages, was following in his father's footsteps as a leader of the white nationalist movement until he began to question its ideology. He joins us to talk about the rise of white supremacy in 2017 and his transition out of the movement. "A lot of people in the movement don't think they're advocating white supremacy," Black explains.

For him, when he was growing up, the Confederate flag was a symbol of southern pride. And he felt like the Confederate statues he saw around were just part of culture. "The fastest way to move forward in some of these towns where taking the statue down is going to be very controversial, is to build a statue of a historical black leader right next to it. That's something that's a lot harder for southern people to argue against," he suggests.
