At it’s core, this is a warm hearted gentle satire about life in a small Irish village. Although Brexit, xenophobia, and lying politicians are on the mind and roundly mocked, the show is really about poking fun at the neuroses and antics of its lovable idiosyncratic characters. In particular I love Garda Nugent, whose dedication to solving petty crime is at Hot Fuzz levels, and Barb, whose American overconfidence and mercenary instincts are hilarious.
'The British Are Coming!' is a podcast about a middle-class Brexit voting English Dad; his 'forgot to vote but Remain believing' Son; and their 'peace keeper' wife & mother - who have post-brexit emmirgrated (legally) to a small village in the Republic of Ireland. This village is home has a capitalist and bullish American Pub landlady; a few other odd characters, including an eager newly qualified member of the Irish Police (the Guarda). Also hiding illegally in this village is a self-proclaimed Brexiteer prophet/politician - think Dominic Cummings or Nigel Farage - who is hiding because when things went badly in Brexit Britain they got the blame... Seems likely considering Mr Teflon Johnson has managed to ...avoid political calamity to his career, but then that's a different story. This podcast is about the village - think an Irish Heartbeat or Archers - a lovely wee sit by the fire as we enjoy the comedy reminiscent of 'Last of the Summer Wine'. The podcast is 12 episodes long, enjoyable, but falls a little flat in places with some story lines not completed by the end, perhaps suggesting a second series, sometime, possible post-covid? Would recommend for a quiet rural light chuckle drama.
