Red Dwarf is a British Sci-Fi comedy that originally started airing on BBC Two in 1988. It would be taken off the air in 1993 only to return in 1997 and be taken off the air again in 1999. In 2009 a miniseries was made for Dave and, upon its success, the show was brought back on the air in 2012 and continues to air today. The show has 11 series (That's British for seasons) and a total of 67 episodes.
Red Dwarf starts with Arnold Rimmer (Chris Barrie) and Dave Lister (Craig Charles) doing some essential routine maintenance on a machine that's main purpose seems to be producing chicken noodle soup on demand. Rimmer and Lister have a relationship mimicking The Odd Couple's Felix and Oscar respectively. Rimmer repeatedly threatens to report Lister to a commanding officer over Lister calling him a smeghead. After a soft day's work the two return to their bunks. Lister attempts to play some music but Rimmer demands peace and quite so he can study for his engineering examine. After hours of studying, and writing half the book on his arm, Rimmer goes off to take, and fail, the Engineer exam. While Rimmer is away we see Lister hanging out with his little-c cat. He talks about how he plans to save all his money and run off to Fiji. Eventually Lister is called into the captain's office.
The Captain has learned that Lister has a cat on board and demands that Lister hands her over. Lister is given the option of cryostasis and removal of pay for the rest of the trip (1.5 years) or giving over the cat, who will be killed. Lister chooses cryostasis and goes into the deep freeze. He is awoken only to find, with the help of the computer Holly (Norman Lovett), that everyone died due to a radiation leak caused by Rimmer's incompetence. It is soon revealed that Rimmer has been brought back as a soft-light hologram. While exploring the halls the two run into big-c Cat (Danny John-Jules). Cat has evolved, over the 3 million years Lister was asleep, from the children of Lister's cat Frankenstien.
