Manchester By The Sea is a film that I would recommend having a drink with. A nice cold Sea Hag IPA or two will do the trick of calming your nerves and lifting your spirits. Which, is just what you’ll need after Kenneth Lonergan’s brilliant, but all too real exploration of grief and loss.
Sea Hag IPA from NEBCO is essentially one of the founding fathers (or, in this case mothers) of the IPA movement. While it’s a smaller label from a more modest brewery, Sea Hag has had almost as large an impact as Founder’s Centennial or Lagunitas IPA. They are ubiquitous because they’re great and they’re great because they are the essence of the IPA style.
Chan-wook Park’s Old Boy is a masterpiece, a modern tragic opera, audacious and beautiful and ultimately just a little bit scarring. The story of loss and revenge follows Oh-dae Su, through his mysterious imprisonment, even more mysterious release and subsequent search for answers. The emotional journey Park takes us on is as raw and real as any ever put on film. Truthfully, by the end of Old Boy you will feel like you’ve lived through something, rather than just watched it.
