Robin picks up where Mike Duncan left off on History of Rome and takes a more rounded approach to the history of the Eastern empire, supplementing the main narrative with lots of review, interviews, and analysis. It doesn't rush through the story, so anyone who wants a quick overview of this period of history should look elsewhere. Yet for those who really want to learn a lot, this is excellent.
A truly gripping retelling of the life of a storied, complex, inspiring but oft-forgotten empire. The way the script manages to juggle so many different perspectives, from factual retellings, to interpretations, to showing what life must have been like on the ground, to the repercussions of the actions of people, "great men" or not, it is all a sight to behold. I don't think I've ever had as amazing an experience listening to anything, podcast or music, as when talking a long walk at night a few years ago, listening to the story of the return of Justinian II from exile. It was like a film unfolding before my very eyes. Nothing like it has happened before or since. Listen to this podcast. It is good.
Enjoyable and always top-quality.
this is my favourite podcast.
This podcast fills a gap in history that is rarely covered. While the UK and Rome get a lot of love, Eastern Europe is often ignored. A very well done walk through of the Eastern Empire. Robin kills it.
Brilliant. Thoroughly well researched, and an engaging narrative to get lost in, in the best of ways. Of the highest quality!
The History of Byzantium is a very professional and informative podcast that tells the story of the Eastern Roman Empire from 476 to 1453. Robin Pierson is an excellent narrator and podcaster, with a smooth British accent. He conveys the sometimes confusing information in an easy to grasp way. The podcast is a very strong successor to Mike Duncan’s History of Rome podcast, and if you liked that one, then you should definitely give this podcast a listen. In the first couple of episodes, Robin backtracks a couple of years, speaking of the state of the Eastern Empire since the History of Rome is unsurprisingly focused on the Western Empire in its final years. This is very well done, and in fact, throughout the podcast Robin points out and calls back to things that happened in The History of Rome podcast, which weaves the two together very nicely.
Excellent! A well researched, professional history podcast with a voice like melted chocolate. I love the listener questions episodes too.
Picking up the torch from the History of Rome isn't an easy task. Robin however accomplished it and has truly created one of the best history podcasts available.
Excellent podcast, highly informative, entertaining enough to keep your interest, and paints a vivid and compelling picture of the Eastern Empire and its neighbours.
