It still amazes him that people pay him to tell stories for a living. Steven kindly sat for a long Skype interview where we touched on such things as whether he thinks of himself as an artist, how explaining his politics get tiresome (spoiler there’s a FAQ he’s had to come up with) and the difference between reading his books and listening to them on audio. After more than two years of processing that firing and coming to accept himself, he came out as a gay man in July 2019. He asked for forgiveness from his former clients and began speaking out against Conversion Therapy. McKrae obviously missed having a mission in life and is turning to embrace being a front-line advocate for banning gay conversion therapy. Lupa is a professional artist and published author comfortably ensconced in the Pacific Northwest that I ran across on Facebook when for some reason the algorithm decided that I would be interested in a divination work shop. I wasn’t but I did issue a friendly challenge to her to try and convince me that I was wrong about divination. A friendly conversation ensued and Lupa gave me some insight into what I was wrong about in regards to how she practiced divination.  She’s one of the most down to earth and practical pagans I’ve ever met she also makes some great artwork form dead things you can see her website at TheGreenwolf.com and buy art at http://thegreenwolf.etsy.com   as always you can visit our website www.wrongbefore.com and subscribe!
In early November Erin Ehm tried to do something that seemed liked it should be easy to do.  She was wrong.  This episode recounts her efforts to get her prosthetic foot fixed and how she ran up against a company decided to be less than helpful.  Her angry diatribe on Facebook struck a cord with many people and has been shared over 500 times you can read the post here https://www.facebook.com/erin.m.mullins/posts/10217715939067830 People understood Erin’s anger and reached out to Blatchford to express their disapproval.  There was enough of a buzz that Blatchford attempted a response you can see it here   Frankly to me it looks like a Now now little girl we know whats best run along now. *rolls eyes*         Frankly I think that in this story its Blatchford that is wrong.  They have the ability to help but are refusing to even though Erin was willing to pay for the help. But you listen to the story yourself and decide.
Episode: 10 Episode Title: The Public is Wrong about Paganism Guests: Lea Rush and Theo Williams Host: Erin Furian Podcast Website: wrongbefore.com OMG we made it to Episode 10! This week’s episode two of my favorite people agreed to be on the podcast.  I’ve known Lea for years and Theo has been a delightful addition to my life as her partner. Lea and Theo have been involved with the pagan Community in the pacific northwest for over thirty years. Lea has been a volunteer and event organizer for many wiccan and science fiction conventions. Theo has been a Wiccan priest for many years.  Together they help me dispel some of the various myths that are wrong about what it means to be pagan. Here is the link to The Aquarian Tabernacle Church of Wicca that is mentioned in the episode: atcwicca.org And links to the Church of Satan churchofsatan.com and the Satanic Temple thesatanictemple.com which neither Lea or Theo are part of but that some people mistake wiccan for. ___ Attributions: Host: Erin Furian Producers: Erin Furian and Anjie Furian Sound Engineer: Anjie Furian Music- 7th floor Tango by silent partner from YouTube free music library The cat’s meow – Maple Furian
Episode: 9 What happens in the brain when we are wrong? Guest: Wendy S. Hubbard Show Website:  www.wrongbefore.com This is more of a meta episode rather than a direct conversation about being wrong.  One of the advantages of being friends with someone for 20 years is the ability to impose on that friendship on occasion.  Wendy is on her third career as a nontraditional student at Adler University.  She is currently working on her doctorate in Clinical Psychology. I decided to pick her brain on about what happens inside the mind when someone is wrong. Wendy S. Hubbard We discuss what the brain is and why it’s so hard for people to accept being wrong.   Where that resistance comes from. Evidently there are psychological and social reason we are so against being wrong!  Who knew! Also I realized I was pretty bad about explaining some of the terms referenced in this episode so here is  list of most of them I think Confirmation bias CBT as in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy ACT is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Core Beliefs – woofta the internet has a lot of interpretations of what Core Beliefs are but in our conversation, they are things you believe that your actions flow out of Adler University School of Psychology Alfred Adler Freud Adlerian Theory Gender roles Aircraft Jacks – look a picture!           Prepper p.s. I’m much less a survivalist and much more a lets not die while camping please kind of prepper.  Also I know where my flashlight is in case of power outage. Psychoanalysis – see Freud Dream interpretation – same as above Wendy throws these three dudes out there pretty quick; Erik Erickson, Jean Piaget, LS Vygotsky.  All of them are big muckty mucks in the field of psychology with different takes on how our minds work.  Wikipedia is your friend. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs There is a load of info out there on this and frankly understanding it can free you up to understanding somethings about the why of why you do some things.  Its handy to have in your brain as a reference. Brenè Brown ok this chick is worth some time exploring her therories.  Just be warned I think she’s wordy and I’m kinda wordy myself _____________ Attributions: Host: Erin Furian Producers: Erin Furian and Anjie Furian Sound Engineer: Anjie Furian Music- 7th floor Tango by silent partner from YouTube free music library ___________ Beginning of Episode promo: Evergreen High School presents Wendy & Peter Pan by Ella Hickson at the EHS Auditorium Friday November 15th 2019 @ 7pm Saturday November 16th 2019 @ 7pm Friday November 22th 2019 @ 7pm Saturday November 23th 2019 @ 7pm Tickets at the door are $7 for students, children and Seniors. $10 for Adults Promo Credits: Slightly Soiled voiced by: Logan Fischer Curly voiced by: Jonah Beach Narrator: Margaret Gorman Music: Bird Creek – Cinematic | Inspirational from the YouTube Free Music Library Baltic Levity – Thatched Villagers by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100720 Artist: http://incompetech.com
Episode 8 It’s Called Theater Darling Guest: Margaret Gorman With Special appearance by Nevil Shortbottom, Pug extraordinaire When my son stated he would be joining the theater program at school I steeled myself for bad renditions of a Charlie Brown Christmas or Romeo and Juliet .  What I found was well run show with actors intent on providing the best performance they could,  professional choreography, sound and lights happening right on que and at the heart of it all, Margaret Gorman. The Evergreen High School Theater director is the vibrant beating heart of this program. Her passion for the students a key factor in sharing her years of knowledge and skill with them to inspire them to achieve some truly incredible work. Margaret  graduated from Hudson’s Bat High School in 1999 then proceeded to get a BA in French literature from Whitman College in 2004.  She did her Theater post-bac work at Portland State University through 2009 and received her MAT with endorsements  in theater and French through Willamette University in 2011 She’s taught at North Salem High School, Hazelbrook Middle School, Tualatin High School, and The Ballroom Dance Company.  She started teaching at Evergreen High School in 2015, with additional training through: The Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford-Upon-Avon in 2017 and the Broadway Teachers Workshop, New York City in 2018 Here is a list of the plays she’s directed: The Wizard of Oz Greek Tragedy Our Town Romeo & Juliet A collection of fractured fairy tales Annie (two different productions) Beauty and the Beast The Three Musketeers Oklahoma Pride & Prejudice Guys & Dolls A Midsummer Night’s Dream Mary Poppins Robin Hood Wendy & Peter Pan Margaret is a vibrant dynamo of a person who is force for good in the lives of the students she teaches. Her Pug, Nevill Shortbottom, heard in this episode as the snore at about the midpoint, is also a student favorite and recently played Sandy in the EHS production of Annie. President Donald J. Trump . (Official White House Photo by D. Myles Cullen) A lot of people have someone in their family that they disagree with politically.  It can lead to some tense discussions.  My sister and I have had our relationship challenges, some related to politics some just from being siblings.  I’m a liberal lefty while she is a staunch republican voter with Libertarian values.  In this episode we discuss why it is she voted for Trump in 2016 and clarify some of her political views in a respectful and non-combative ways. While I do not agree with her choices I can respect that she had reasons for opinions.   This episode was recorded prior to the whistle blower report so does not cover that topic. The I’ve Been Wrong Before Podcast Website John J. Smid was once the former director of Love in Action, an ex-gay ministry.  Now he’s a happily married man living with his husband in Texas. His path from coming out to rejecting his sexuality to embracing it, is a long and twisty road. That path started with his being married to his first wife, figuring out he was gay and getting divorced.  It led to living as an out gay man during the 70s where John fell in with evangelical Christians.  Where they witnessed to him and told him that he couldn’t be gay and a Christian. Seeking to be the best man he thought he should be he went to his church for help but they didn’t know how to help him That is when he found the ex-gay ministry Love in Action. He quit his job, joined Love in Action as a volunteer and completely embraced ex-gay ministry.  Even to the point of leaving his children.  He believed he couldn’t be a good dad and be gay. Motivated by a driving desire for authenticity and succumbing to the viewpoint that the ministry taught. John believed that to have the connection he craved with another person was that it had to be with a woman. And that the only way to do that, was to deny all things homosexual. This led to a 30-year journey that nearly destroyed him even while he taught the same failed teachings to others. *Apologies for the rookie mistake of the not putting the chatty Siamese out before we started recording. * John struggled with the duality of finding some emotional healing from past trauma he’d experienced and a loving community in the ministry even while dealing with the damage that the self-inflicted denial of his natural inclinations was causing him.  That is until a peaceful protest outside his door and the actions of a man of integrity showed John what kindness and love really looked like. He finally resigned from the ministry. Without the weight of managing the ministry or pushing its agenda he was able to finally reflect on what he believed. He started to meet other gay Christians and ex-ex-gays who opened his eyes to the truth of what his actions and beliefs had wrought.  Rather and turn inward and become bitter, John faced the consequences. John’s persistence at facing the process, while dealing with the consequences of his actions drove him deeper in to learning how to be a loving human being.  In doing so he learned to love himself. The I’ve Been Wrong Before Podcast Website Angela is an Instructional Assistant with a local elementary school. She schooled me on what her job entails, why she does it, and why we need more Instructional Assistants in our classrooms. Having 30+ kids in a classroom means the kids who need more help draws the teacher’s attention away from the general class. Angela helps support the teachers meet those higher need students, keeping the learning moving for everyone. She’s putting up with poverty level pay, job instability and a lackluster school funding budget just so the kids can get the “ah ha!” moment that comes when they grasp a concept.  What can I say but this right here is a hero. I was there. This is the story of that day. Sought Out in Virginia Beach, VA, The ex-gay ministry I was once part of, is no longer around. In fact a lot of the ex-gay ministries are out of business now. They manged to do lot of damage to a generation of gay, lesbian and trans-gendered people along the way with their now discredited teachings. Westboro Baptist Church https://www.godhatesfags.com/ There still people out there trying to convince people that you can pray the gay away and pushing this emotionally abusive and damaging thinking. Please dont ever let religion convince you that it is more important than your mental health or loving your own child or sibling or parent.
