The message of The Big Leap http://amzn.to/2jO1v7W, by Gay Hendricks ties into the DREAM-to-DO message Kent shares on this podcast. That’s why we have created this short series of podcast episodes to talk about how each of us can take “The Big Leap" in our lives, relationships, and careers.  We kicked off the Big Leap Series in Episode 096 by defining the Upper Limit Problem and how it works. Next, in Episode 097, we examine the flawed foundation of the Upper Limit Problem. In Episode 098, Kent talked about how to spot and dissolve Upper Limit Behavior in our daily lives.  In this episode, Kent defines the Zone of Genius and shares why it’s so important for you to discover your Zone of Genius.  Purpose of this Episode Before you can take the Big Leap in your life and career, you must confront your fear with your Zone of Genius. Tips Shared in this Episode 1) Review of past Big Leap episodes: Episode 096 — Defining the Upper Limit Problem and how it works Episode 097 — Hidden barriers that hold you back and how to dissolve them Episode 098 — How to spot Upper Limit Behavior in your daily life 2) Two big questions to ask yourself if you want to take the Big Leap: What is my genius? How can I bring forth my genius in ways that serve others and myself at the same time? 3) Activities in our lives occur in one of four zones: Zone of Incompetences — Activities you are not good at. Zone of Competence — Activities others can do just as well as you. Zone of Excellence — Activities you do extremely well and are in your comfort zone. Zone of Genius — Activities you are uniquely suited to do and draw upon your special gifts and strengths. 4) Discovering your Zone of Genius is your life’s Big Leap! Everything else is just a hop. The Upper Limit Problem (aka: your Upper Limit Behaviors) pull you away from your Zone of Genius. The comfort you experience in your Zone of Excellence also keeps you from taking the Big Leap into your Zone of Genius. Most people have carefully-crafted stories about why they can’t take their Big Leap: “If it weren’t for ___________________, I could be doing what I really want to do." Often the biggest fear of taking the Big Leap is personal: “If I take the Big Leap into my Zone of Genius, I might fail. What if I really open up to my true genius and find out that my genius isn’t good enough? 5) Your Genius Commitment: “I commit to living in my Zone of Genius, now and forever… all for the glory of God." NOTE: Kent added “all for the glory of God” because of his personal faith and belief in Scripture. Can a disadvantage become an advantage? Is there a way to turn your greatest adversity into your greatest advantage? According to the Compensation Theory, the answer is YES! What is the Compensation Theory? It's the idea that a disadvantage in life can actually become a significant advantage for you if you learn how to compensate for it. In the book David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell refers to the Compensation Theory by using phrases like "the advantages of disadvantages" and "the theory of desirable difficulty." He frames challenges like dyslexia as difficulties, but when people learn to compensate and work around their dyslexia, they find that their difficulty has actually led to a massive opportunity. It's E+R=O (events + RESPONSE = outcome) at it's best! Did you like this episode? Then I’d love to give you a shoutout on the show! We all want to reach our full potential, but is the direction we're following helping or hurting us reach that destiny? You see, when it comes to destiny, how to make decisions is everything! Or to put it another way, direction determines destiny. The direction you're following will either lead you to success and significance or take you down the path to failure and loss. Jim Rohn said it best: "Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines practiced every day. And failure is nothing more than a few errors in judgment repeated every day." So what life habits are you forming? Are they leading you towards your dream destiny or are pulling you away from it? In episode 073 of The Live It Forward Show, Kent Julian talks in-depth about how direction determines destiny and how every choice we make, makes us. Did you like this episode? In Episode 088, I introduced you to The Big Leap http://amzn.to/2jO1v7W, a book by Gay Hendricks that I read last year. I didn’t just read it, I devoured it. I read it cover-to-cover three times and listened to the audio version at least eight times. The reason I devoured this book is because it ties so well into the DREAM-to-DO message that this podcast and my work is all about.  During Episode 088, I mentioned how I was journaling my way through the book and that once I was finished, I would create a podcast series dedicated to explaining what I’ve learned about The Big Leap and how we can all apply it to our lives. This is the first episode of that series.  My heartfelt hope is that you will do more than just listen to this podcast series. I hope you will: Purchase the book http://amzn.to/2jO1v7W,  and devour it for yourself Listen to each of these episodes multiple times Wrestle with the ideas I share and journal your thoughts Take steps to take the Big Leap in your life, relationships, and career Purpose of this Episode Taking the Big Leap will help you move from DREAM to DO in your life, relationships, and career... and the first step to taking the Big Leap is defining what is holding you back—the Upper Limit Problem. Three events occurred this week that made me think about the importance of having healthy family relationships as we move from DREAM to DO in our business or career:   1) My three children went back to college after being home for a month during Christmas and New Year’s break.    2) Matt Woodrum asked a great question in his Wrestling with Fatherhood Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/wrestlingwithfatherhood/ ): What is your biggest family goal for the new year and why?    3) I had a conversation with Jake, a young man who has the opportunity to pursue a career as a speaker. One of his concerns was if travel would negatively impact his family.   These three events made me think deeply about one of the things I am proudest about in my business, and something that I hope I can help the next generation of business leaders experience as well.   Purpose of this Episode   You can succeed in business and maintain healthy family relationships by practicing 5 P’s with your children.   Tips Shared in this Episode   Business success will end up being empty if you lose your family along the way.
