Karim, Alaric, and The Angel are back to explore more of Trivester and see what they can get into! We're heading towards a huge tree, losing our way, and getting into a scrape with goblins! At least I get to use my awesome sword! Much love to Jars for the amazing map! After that, we're catching up on stuff - Mike's prereleases, Dirk's job hunt, my trip to Busch Gardens, and Brian's anniversary! In case you’re completely lost, Brian created this MTG RPG from scratch and we periodically play it on the show. This campaign is called Heirs of Trivester. If you’d like to hear the previous installments, here are some links to get you caught up!   We begin this episode with a listener-supplied Magic Mad Lib, sent in by lvl99luck. We learn all about enchantment speed and refuse to name Balance. This Mad Lib is nothing to Murder at! Then it's time to get down to business. We're following up the last episode and diving right into a Mythic Conscription for Guildpact. It turns out that the enchantment speed we learned about in the Mad Lib is a pretty big thing in Guildpact. Like a lot. It also turns out that Guildpact's rares are actually... rares. So yeah, that's a thing.   Support us on Patreon! – https://www.patreon.com/themanapool Intro & Outro Music – Diamond by Swift – https://myspace.com/swiftband This episode’s post: http://themanapool.com/podcast/episode-464 Check out our archive at http://themanapool.com/category/podcast Email us at dorks@themanapool.com Follow us on Twitter at @TheManaPool Like us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/TheManaPool Subscribe to us on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/c/TheManaPool Follow us on Twitch at http://www.twitch.tv/themanapool TMP Steam Group: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/themanapool Subscribe to our RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/themanapool Brought to you by Mana Pool Productions
With the weird out-of-sequence Felidar Guardian ban that just went down, we thought it would be a good time to look at the history of the Banned & Restricted Lists in Magic. Joining us for this adventure is none other than SCG writer, brewer, and longtime player Chris Lansdell! We're starting at the very beginning, waaaay back in 1994, with the first B&R update that predated even the existence of formats! We'll weave our way through the now-obvious and now-ridiculous additions to the list, giving you some historical reasons whenever we can.  Timeline of DCI bans & restrictions: http://mtg.gamepedia.com/Timeline_of_DCI_bans_and_restrictions Check out Chris Lansdell's articles: http://www.starcitygames.com/tags/ChrisLansdell    Support us on Patreon! – https://www.patreon.com/themanapool Intro & Outro Music – Diamond by Swift – https://myspace.com/swiftband This episode’s post: http://themanapool.com/podcast/episode-462 Check out our archive at http://themanapool.com/category/podcast Email us at dorks@themanapool.com Follow us on Twitter at @TheManaPool Like us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/TheManaPool Subscribe to us on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/c/TheManaPool Follow us on Twitch at http://www.twitch.tv/themanapool TMP Steam Group: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/themanapool Subscribe to our RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/themanapool Brought to you by Mana Pool Productions
It's time to go back to the Banned & Restricted List! We've grabbed Chris Lansdell to join us again so we can cover the next several years of the banhammer's history. Since we have sources for some of these and we have some memory of them, we have a bit more to say this time. Last time we went from 1994 to 2001. This time we're covering 2002 to 2010, just before the inception of Modern as a format and a whole new Banned list to think about. Woo! Cosmic Larva in 2020! It's got to be better than the Desecration Elemental, right? Guys? In this episode we're finishing off our look at Modern Masters 2017! The whole set looks like a lot of fun to draft. There are a few more rarity shifts to discuss, looking at how the overall strategies of each allied color pair overlap with each other, and more jaw-dropping and reminiscing. Ah yes, good stuff. But that's not all! After that we're doing another Mythic Conscription, this time for the oddball final set of the Mirrodin block, Fifth Dawn! With its Beacons, Bringers, Sunburst, and assorted nonsense, what's going to be mythic? What's fine as a rare? How much disagreement can you fit into one episode? Why does Mike REALLY play Magic the way he does? Let's find out! It's time for another Mythic Consultation! This week we're finishing off the Mercadian Masques block by hitting up Prophecy. There are THREE big cycles that run through the rares in this set, so we've got a lot to talk about. This is a really strange one you guys. Like seriously. Also, Brian tells us about a Grand Prix Trial he went to. And he robots a lot. Sorry about that. He did well though! Yay! Announcing the Odds & Ends! These are the recordings that are made before and after the podcast proper, both The Mana Pool and Monday Night Magic! They're going to be completely uncensored and unedited except for personal information and the like, and they'll be exclusively for Patreon patrons.  The first TMP Odds & Ends which comes from this very episode, is going to be public so everyone can see what they'll be getting (or missing). It's time to discuss that yearly occurrence - the rotation of old Standard into new Standard. The dorks are taking a look at the cards and decks that came from Magic 2015 and the Theros block and bidding them a fond farewell. Or in a few cases, laughing maniacally as they disappear. Whichever. But first, a bit of news about the upcoming Arena of the Planeswalkers expansion! Literally, just a bit. And there's the new Comp Rules update for those of you that care. It's Prerelease time! Mike, Brian, and Chewie rolled out to Kit Kringle in Winston-Salem to play with Battle for Zendikar for the first time. It's a nice little shop, if somewhat unprepared for the massive turnout, and I highly recommend anyone in the area check it out. As for the Prerelease itself, it turned out to be pretty awesome. Mike was playing Grixis Colorless, Brian was in Mardu Allies/Eldrazi, and Chewie played Bant Aggro. One of the dorks finished in the top 8, one of the dorks managed to fire off the Limit Break of a planeswalker, two of the dorks played against each other (of course), and one of the dorks forgot to RTFC - twice! To find out who did all this and more, you'll just have to listen! This episode begins with a brief recap of the Magic Origins Prerelease that Mike and Chewie went to. Then we head over to the San Diego Comic-Con Magic panel, which was really just about story and flavor. Fun stuff. After that we go into Brian's topic idea, and boy is it a good one. Since Magic Origins seems to be so universally lauded, we figure it won't be too long until WotC decides to do Magic Origins 2. So we're checking out the remaining planeswalkers and trying to figure out whose origin should be spotlighted! Along the way we'll design a few of the Legendary Creature halves of these new transforming Walkers, talk about some of the origin stories we may or may not already know, and ramble on about whatever else comes to mind. The real purpose of this show, like most of the stuff I do, is to entertain you – the listener. Rather than asking the same old questions that everyone else does, I’m looking to give you a slightly more off-the-wall look into these Magic players and judges and what-have-you by catching them off guard and putting them on the spot. This episode is the first of four, and covers the first handful of people to answer my questions. Appearing on this episode are Brian and Mike, two of my cohosts from The Mana Pool and Cluze and Squee, my two cohosts from Monday Night Magic. Also, a more different Mike from the Pitt Imps Podcast, CJ Shrader from JudgeCast, and our buddy and occasional TMP guest JT answer my questions too. Of course we can't leave out the players! I talked to frequent SCG Open Top 8 competitor Rudy Briksza, Hall-of-Famers LSV and Patrick Chapin, and two-time Worlds winner Shahar Shenhar! This episode wraps up with "legendary streamer" (listen to the episode to see why that's in quotes) NumotTheNummy, also known as Kenji Egashira! He's got such a dreamy voice... Hope you enjoy! Let me know what your answers would be! And keep an eye out for the last batch of Three Questions from Grand Prix Charlotte coming VERY soon! Pioneer was announced as a brand new competitive format, which is something that hasn't happened on this scale since Modern was announced 8 years ago. We thought it would be cool to go back and look at the history of competitive Magic formats since the beginning. We're talking Type I, Type II, Type 1.5, and even Type 1.x. Remember Extended? Poor Extended. To clarify, we're only talking about Constructed formats that were sanctioned for paper to play at premier events. No online-only formats (though we will mention a couple standouts) and no casual formats (though Commander and Brawl do get honorable mentions for being officially-sanctioned casual formats).  And go easy on Dirk, who is 100% kitchen table and didn't even know what Pioneer was until we got to that part of the episode. We forgot he doesn't pay any attention whatsoever to Magic news. And we finish this episode up with two quick Magic Mad Libs from Magnor Criol! A few weeks ago we recorded a live episode at Dirk's house! We were playing the Explorers of Ixalan multiplayer experience using the preconstructed decks that come with it. Dinosaurs, Pirates, Merfolk, and Vampires slam headfirst into each other to determine who will win the golden city of Orazca! Seriously though, this was a lot of fun. The rules are set up to keep things from getting out of control, the decks feel pretty balanced, and the actual game setup isn't painful at all. It's a solid experience and we highly recommend it! After a week off we're back and tackling all the new stuff that has cropped up since we last recorded. First there was Announcement Day, which covered all the ways WotC is going to try to suck out your money in the next several months. PAX West also happened, which means a ridiculous amount of information about the new block was vomited out all over us. That's cool though, the new set actually looks like a fun one! These no-job-having zombies are a drain on the fragile (and tentacled) Innistradian economy! Once we overthrow this giant monster cosmic horror thing, they either need to become productive members of society or they need to go right back where they came from, whether that be a hole in the ground, the bottom of the sea, or all the way back to Hell itself! On this episode, the dorks have decided to take it nice and easy. Nothing stressful, nothing brain-intensive, just some simple segments that we can have some fun with. So we're starting out with a good old Magic Mad Lib! Cleanse! After that, we're flexing our creative muscles with a pair of Commander Story Circles using two Standard-legal legendary creatures! They're both pretty awesome, which is good because they were the only ones in Standard worth building around that we hadn't done already. Let us know what you think about the decks we built! It's that time again! I went to a Grand Prix, so now you get more Three Questions! This is the first of four shows from GP Charlotte 2016. When I find myself at a big Magic tournament, I take my trusty digital recorder and ask lots of people three questions that are a bit silly, because I'm not going to ask serious hard-hitting stuff to players between rounds, to judges during their shift, and to everyone else while they're doing...whatever it is they're doing. Besides, my off-the-wall questions put them on the spot and reveal a little bit more about who they are as a person and as a Magic player.  On this episode I spoke to a pretty good variety of players. I hit up some listeners in JT, Sexy Jarod, and AJ. I bothered judges Michael "Scary Judge" Arrowsmith, Casey Brefka, and Charles Featherer. I tormented fellow podcasters Bill Bloodworth of Monday Night Magic & Enchant World and Jordan Kennedy, formerly of At Your End Step. And to round it out there's MTG cosplayer extraordinaire Christine Sprankle and WotC coverage guy (and Pro Tour Champion) Jacob Van Lunen and his lovely wife Tara and ADORABLE daughter Luna. And how about we finish off the episode with SCG's own sexy robot, judge, and tournament-runner guy Jared Sylva, who has a baaaaaad feeling about this. Sometimes it really sucks to be right all the time doesn't it? I hope you guys enjoyed the extra work I put into this one. Once I had the idea to include everyone's musical response, I couldn't not do it, you know? A few weeks ago the dorks all gathered at Brian's house to play some Magic! And since we weren't able to record this week for various reasons, you get to hear it now. Yay! On this episode we began with a game of Commander Planechase. It went for just about an hour and was a fun and (relatively) fast game! After that, we decided to just say screw it and do another one. But this time Brian had the idea that we should each pick a deck built by someone else! So Brian & Chewie swapped decks, Mike & Dirk traded, and we went at it with an unfamiliar deck. This game was slightly more epic in length (about 2 hours) but I don't remember it dragging or anything like that. So strap in and enjoy a bunch of dorks playing Magic, picking on each other, giggling incessantly, and just having a good time. This is our first live episode with the new microphone, and I really think it turned out well. The full Rivals of Ixalan set is upon us! The dorks spend this episode going through the Card Image Gallery picking out more sweet cards that we feel like talking about! There are a few reprints from Ixalan in Rivals of Ixalan, let's talk about that. Also the RIX rules update happened. Also Patrick Sullivan rants about Ravenous Chupacabra. Also we miss Brian. It's the final TMP of 2017! We're talking about the newly revealed Rivals of Ixalan mechanic, Ascend. Then we have to talk about the end of Duel Decks, and how that's sad but not terribly sad. The bulk of the episode is a Mythic Conscription for Alliances, the follow-up to Ice Age. This set...this set, man. It's uh...it's a set. Of cards. It's a tough one for the MC treatment because some of these cards are just..lame. Also, Force of Will? Uncommon. That's important. We hope everyone enjoys the end of their year and any holiday celebrations you may partake in! Let's make 2018 awesome! The dorks begin with an oddly appropriate Magic Mad Lib (written by Chewie this time!) and then dive into another edition of There's No Plane Like Home. To follow up last week's Theros episode we decided to go to the OTHER plane where the gods are definitely real and you can totally talk to them: Amonkhet. It turns out the Amonkhet discussion is really...weird. Compared to other planes, Amonkhet really doesn't have normal life exactly. It's not really a place to live, it's a Nicol Bolas warrior factory.  With the subject matter of the Mad Lib and the harsh reality of Amonkhet, this episode is surprisingly somber at times. But don't worry, we're still just as happy and dorky as usual!   Come join us in the future! The show is live on Thursdays around 8pm(ish) Eastern time on Twitch! Has your playgroup ever issued a ban on certain cards or combinations of cards? Have you ever made the decision to stop playing something because, while it might have been effective, it just wasn't FUN? That's what the dorks are discussing this week with our own experiences playing lots of Magic as a group over the years. Also WotC has revealed the structure of MTG Arena's in-game economy and card acquisition, so we spent some time going over all that. Seems workable, so we can't wait to see how it feels! The dorks are back after taking the week off for Thanksgiving, and we are in rare form. The actual point of this episode is simple - do a Mythic Conscription for Urza's Legacy. Nice and simple, right? But since the dorks were in such rare form, we sort of strayed off topic. A lot. Pretty much everyone says something that, in a perfect world, would be cut from the final podcast. But as this is not a perfect world, you get to hear all our nonsense! Come join us in the future!
