The word Burnout was first used by psychologist Herbert Freudenberger. His description in 1974 stated that burnout is “a depletion or exhaustion of a person’s physical or mental resources attributed to his or her prolonged, yet unsuccessful striving toward unrealistic expectations, internally or externally derived.” He also stated that it is “the extinction of motivation or incentive, especially where one's devotion to a cause or relationship fails to produce the desired results.”
