I LOVE how weird and funny and dark and fascinating the world is--taking the mundane and making it both funny and unsettling with the promise of so much bubbling under the surface. Kafka-esque indeed. I can't wait to see where this goes!
The Milkman of St. Gaff'sThank you so much for the review! Episode two will be out tomorrow!
Delightfully dry humor, an immersive setting, and an intriguing mystery! Very good
Think Mayberry meets Lovecraft. It's perfect blend of odd humor and impending doom. Narrator's voice acting is spot on. Perky, and yet drops oddly menacing comments perfectly. He's a hapless "do gooder" who happens to work for a menacing milk company.
This one of our new favourite shows! The juxtaposition of dark and upbeat is fantastic. A dark dystopia, reminiscent of George Orwell or Aldus Huxley l, but obscured from view by an infectiously light-hearted surface level plot, with the sinister moments only rearing occasionally. The combination of small town life charm and foreboding secrets is very enjoyable. The humour is so innocently sprinkled in by the lovablly nieve narrator. Very glad to have come across this show and can't wait for more!
Very new, only one episode out at the time of this review. Very eerie and low-key funny. Definitely getting some creepy vibes -- I can't wait to hear more!
The Milkman of St. Gaff'sThank you so much for the review! Episode two will be out tomorrow!
The contrast between the small island idyll narrated by a generally upbeat narrator describing very horrific shit in a nasty wartime dystopia is such an amazing juxtaposition, it's so fantastically intriguing . The sound design is very clean and really brings everything together nicely, it does it's job perfectly and feels totally necessary. I'm writing this having listened to episode 2 but I feel as if there is something we as the audience have yet to learn, or maybe its a mystery that will eat at us. Either way I'm so excited for more
One of the better fiction podcasts out there. Many fictional podcasts put too much effort in voice acting and sound effects when they should focus on the story, the Milkman of St. Gaffs does the reverse.
The narrator is so endearing although you know there is something dark lying just beneath the surface. The sounds and atmosphere mesh perfectly with the storytelling. I love the song at the end of episode 4. It encapsulates the quirkiness, sadness, and, oddly enough, highlights the seemingly good-naturedness of Howie. The dystopian background is a wonderful setting and the characters, so far, really come to life. Jaded sincerity? Not sure...I do agree with David - Mayberry (whistling really gives you that feel) meets Lovecraft - although the monsters have not yet made an appearance, or has he? Have they?I’m purposefully waiting a day before starting episode 5 as I know the wait between episodes will be painful.Thank you Chris...
Fascinating, original, bizarre and captivating! Brilliantly written *and* acted. A real gem.
Insanely well written. Such an awesome atmospheric adventure. The catalysts of the story seem to be driven by an escape from ones past and a longing for an inclusive future. The main character is hilarious maybe without intent and the supporting cast of townsfolk make up an amazing ensemble to pull this whole story together. SPOILER ALERT AHEAD!!!!!!!! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THE GIANT COW!!! lol
If there is one thing you need to know about 'The Milkman of St. Gaff's' it is - KEEP LISTENING! What a wonderfully unique experience listening to this podcast was, and every time a new episode arrives in my feed I can't wait to go for a walk, and give it my full attention. It stands apart from other Horror audio dramas with it's upbeat tone, but it's the literal definition of "kill them with kindness" - I can't think of anything more insanely Canadian. 10/10 would listen again.
It was funny and interesting in the beginning, mysterious, and I liked the voice acting but through the middle of the serious it kind of lost momentum and I lost interest, did not finish it.
It's amusing at first, but after the first season the joke runs thin. Like skim milk.
Sure, it says Howie’s story is “absurdist humor” but whatever you’re thinking that entails, it’s weirder. However, it’s also strangely cohesive and not too off-the-tracks to follow. Obsessively. Can’t wait to keep listening to more season 2!
A highly specific vibe. An unreliable narrator in a world not unlike our own. Nautical religion, light early 20th century espionage flavor, dark secrets, shiny exteriors, and more suspicious activity than you can shake a stick at.Perhaps the most gripping part of the experience is Howie himself, a character you alternately pity, cheer for, fear for, and recoil from. A childish, boy-howdy, aw-shucks, stone cold killer with a heart of gold and a mind of poison.

Just make it a good one, eh?” Dr Who.If you know nothing about Dr. Who, please read the wiki page https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who before continuing reading this review.Big Finish Productions is a professional production company, publisher and distributor. They produce CDs, downloads and books. They are perhaps best known for their Doctor Who ranges of full-cast audio dramas (and its various spin-offs).There are ~104 1 hour Dr. Who-verse original audiodrama episodes available without pay through some of the podcast apps(I wasn't able to get it through Stitcher but I was able to through Pocket casts.). They all star original cast members from the TV series Dr. Who and Torchwood. The majority of stories are with the eighth Dr Who (Paul McGann) but there are stories with the ninth Dr(Eccelston), tenth Dr (Tennyson), guest appearance from the fourth (Baker), fifth (Davison) and sixth(Baker). We also get to hear from some popular companions Rose (Piper), Donna (Tate), and River Song (Kingston). There are many Torchwood episodes where we get time with every member of the Cardiff Torchwood circa 2006 (with original TV cast). I have listened to most of the episodes and they range from okay to good (with one that was inspired). The eighth Dr Who only got a TV movie so I figure the large number of audiodramas was to make up for the fact that he never got a regular TV series. McGann's Dr. Who is reminiscent of the first Dr. Who. He is wise, weary, serious, sometimes sarcastic and has emotional vunerability that seems all too human. Paul McGann is a good voice actor but the audiodramas do suffer from the fact that we do not have a strong visual impression to along with the voice. I also think that the casting, writing and direction did not serve him well. (Sheridan Smith might have an OBE but her companion was irritating). The stories with the 9th Dr. were good and it was really wonderful to hear Eccelston as Dr. Who The 10th Dr. stories were pretty good but two episodes stood out: one very good episode with Donna Noble where she meets her prince, and one inspired episode with River Song where River and the 10th Dr leave notes for each other through time (Expiry Dating). The Torchwood episodes ranged from fair to good. The better stories are the one's with Ianto and Captain Jack (one story with Ianto that brought a tear to my eye).Overall, though they are not great stories it's still fun to visit with "old friends". I recommend that you skip around and pick out the stories with your favorite characters rather than binging them. I am skipping my usual tagline because Big Finish is a relatively (for the podcast world) well funded professional studio using well known professional actors. They make a living trying to entertain me so they expect criticism. However, most of the audiodrama podcasts are done by amatuers or under funded semi professionals. Since I cannot do what they do, I feel that any criticism I make should tempered by the fact that I am unwilling to take the same risks that they do. Hence the tagline "Those who can......"
The Milkman of St. Gaff'sHi, Are you sure this is a review for The Milkman of St. Gaff's? It looks like it might be a review for Big Finish. Thanks!
The craftsmanship of The Milkman of St. Gaff's podcast is truly commendable. Having revisited it multiple times, I am continually struck by the creator's skill in shaping a narrative that captivates listeners. The protagonist, Howie, stands out as a complex and intriguing character. The podcast seamlessly intertwines storytelling with themes of mental illness, religion, secrecy, and an intricate web of suspicious activities involving the milk men in a world similar to ours.Howie's character is the linchpin of the entire experience, and his multifaceted nature keeps the audience enthralled. Howie evokes a wide range of emotions, from empathy to excitement, from fear to disgust. His persona is a contradictory blend of apparent childishness and a boy-next-door demeanor, combined with the characteristics of a ruthless killer, all while being a total sweetheart riddled with an ill mind. The seamless blend of these contrasting elements adds depth and richness to the storytelling, transforming "The Milkman of St. Gaff's" into a truly captivating and unforgettable experience.I also appreciate the minimal production, which avoids overwhelming the content. Howie's relatable character growth can help people feel more connected to the podcast overall.
So well-written and addictive. You love and hate the main character all at the same time. Love the Canadian accent too. Highly recommend!
Poignant and creepily wholesome. Howie is the unreliable narrator you intermittently want to pat on the head and shake angrily.
