RATING
One episode in of this new drama and it’s really absorbing. It plays it’s hand slowly in this opening episode, letting you settle you in with plenty of characters and subplots, building to a striking final act. The production values and performances are first rate, creating a totally immersive atmosphere in a world where everything is not quite right! Can’t wait to hear more.
Excellent production value and a powerhouse cast supporting an intriguing and lore-heavy narrative. Very excited for this one!
This show lures you in with a fantastic cast of loveable characters (bar one obvious exception) and the trust you feel for them may end up… slightly misplaced. There are too many powerhouses in the cast to count and they all do an incredible job. The show forces you to examine morality and how far you would go to protect the people you care about. I sure hope I never come across a cult because I would end up fully indoctrinated. The last episode was explosive and I’m so excited to find out what happens next in future seasons!
The Secret of St Kilda is a master class in how cults work -- because it puts the listener through the experience. Even if you go in thinking you know what it's gonna be about, it lulls you into a false sense of security -- pancakes, sweet shopkeepers, lovely tightknit community, and all -- until the danger becomes suddenly, sharply, apparent. It's beautifully sound designed and acted. I love a story set in Scotland, and if I had one critique, it's actually that I wish it would lean into the Scottishness MORE! Excited for season 2 <3
Definitely not about a cult. Definitely. What a brilliant story, creepy, supernatural and with a host of wonderful voice acting. The slow reveal of Lockie's story and his interaction with the islanders make this show a joy to listen to. The regular cliffhanger endings make sure that you'll binge the whole series.
This show does something that not nearly enough shows do: the characters are three dimensional, despite being in a cult. It's one of my biggest pet peeves when cult members are depicted as mindless, uncaring idiots and when I say this show does a better job than pretty much any other media at showing what, exactly, is wrong with high control groups? I mean it. Also, the voice acting is unbelievably good!
The Secret of St. Kilda is truly one of the most phenomenal shows I've listened to! It's mystery captivates the brain and the emotional beats punch straight into the heart and rip it right out of your chest. Every voice actor in the show does an absolutely incredible job and the writing is some of my favorite writing in any podcast. I love love love this show and recommend it to everyone I talk to!
This started out so well but sadly it did not end well. Overly tropey, chaotic storyline, bland characters. Some of the VAs were good but overall it tried to do too much in only 10 episodes.
The Secret of St. Kilda is wildly underrated. And I don’t say that because it’s not doing incredibly well for itself (it is) but because it deserves ALL the listeners. This cast is just absolute perfection, and the story is compelling at every turn. This might not make any sense but I can only describe the experience of listening to The Secret of St. Kilda as “fog drenched.” The atmosphere is perfectly cultivated to give this deeply ominous feeling, and you never quite know what’s coming. I did lots of gasping when watching this show, enough gasping to seriously concern my flatmate. And of course, the production quality is through the roof. Just be warned though, expect to be ruined emotionally and to enjoy every second of it.
