Gulalai Ismail, at the young age of 16, decided to start changing the lives of girls living in one the most difficult parts of the North West of Pakistan by empowering them. She and her sister Saba (age 15) established a girls led organization, AWARE GIRLS, through which they started educating young girls about their basic rights and strengthening their leadership skills — enabling them to speak up for their rights. Today, she is working on increasing political participation of women in areas where they are not even allowed to vote, and where women political participation in considered taboo. Gulalai is also working on sexual and reproductive health rights of women to increase women's control over their own bodies and lives, and working on increasing women's roles in peacebuilding to prevent young people from joining militant groups. She will discuss challenges she faces and her personal motivation, as well as share stories of changes from her work. Gulalai will also talk about how her work is changing the lives of girls and bringing peace in the region.
