In today's episode, my guest, Dr. 'Tope Oriola, a criminologist and associate professor at the University of Alberta discusses how large systems such as government bodies can address violence against women and girls. We discuss how societal norms, traditions and cultural practices  perpetuate gender inequality and gender-based violence, identifying a range of contributing factors such as poverty, cultural bias, patriarchy, existing laws, government policies, and level of literacy . Dr. Oriola is a renowned researcher and teacher and is well known for his work on policing and use of force by police, transnational crimes, terrorism studies, political violence, social movement and resource conflict, and has many publications in leading scholarly journals. He contributes regularly to media interviews and expert opinions, and is the recipient of a number of awards including the Governor General of Canada Academic Gold Medal. He is the president of the Canadian Association of African Studies (CAAS) and the joint Editor-in-Chief of African Security journal.The articles mentioned in the episode can be found here:
