Last week, American rapper, actor and TV host, T.I. aka "TIP", shocked the world when he admitted on a podcast interview that he annually accompanies his 18-year-old daughter to her gynecological exam to see if her “hymen is still intact”; basically ensuring that she’s still a virgin. But while T.I.’s comments continue to cause an uproar on the internet, there is a more disturbing reality: virginity testing is widespread around the globe and has historically been associated with far more complex questions of gender, sexual politics, history, religion, and culture.
