It's really hard not to have fun alongside the cast as they try to keep Thornvale safe. And it's pretty much impossible not to love Oliver Allen Evans!
ThornvaleThanks so much for listening. We love Oliver too!
One of the few actual-play RPG podcasts that's good right from the beginning! Definitely worth a listen if you're into RPG podcasts! Looking forward to more.
ThornvaleThanks so much, Alex! That means a lot!
An exciting and riveting experience! Wonderful storytelling, a great cast, and excellent editing make this podcast a MUST listen.
ThornvaleYou guys are awesome! We really appreciate these kind words.
I listen to a lot of actual play podcasts, and this is one of my favorites. I literally just made an account to give them a good review. The system they use is simple which makes it great for listeners so you don't get bogged down by too much rolling. The modern setting and story are a breath of fresh air among so many DnD actual plpodcasts. The editing is great and they always release on time. Overall a great show and I highly recommend it.
ThornvaleThat's so great, Ace of Spades! Glad you enjoy it so much.
THIS IS EVERYTHING I'VE EVER WANTED IN AN ACTUAL-PLAY TYPE OF PODCAST. HOLY SHIT. You get to know each of the characters and fall in love with them and protect them like they're you're kids and want the best for them. Please go listen to this podcast right now. You won't regret it one bit. IT GETS INTENSE REALLY FAST AND I LOVE THAT.
ThornvaleThanks for this awesome review. It means the world to us.
Good Ole Monster Huntin!Get ready to wrangle some monsters, because this podcast does not back down from a challenge! Right out the gate the podcast starts off strong with a nice scene of this monster striking the small town of Thornvale. You are given a sense of excitement and dread as you realize what the party will be up against is no walk in the park and the danger is very high. The characters are set up nicely in this small town and nothing feels forced at all as you get to know each of them while they begin to investigate this mystery. The DM does a great job at bringing in a lot of exciting moments for the players to bounce off of, never leaving them with an awkward moment of “Well now what?”. The quality continues to improve as the show goes along and the usage of music is a great touch that really helps build the scenes. So if you are looking for a fun Monster of the Week podcast, want to learn the game along with the players, and want to hear some weird monster tales that happen in this small town nestled in the middle of Florida, then look no further because they have you covered!
ThornvaleSo glad you like the show and the music! Our Keeper works very hard on the music, so we're thankful that it's appreciated.
A super fun and spooky show! S.Lewis is a great host and I delight in the way she makes her husband and friends squirm as thing get more and more tense as the story goes on!
ThornvaleOur Keeper sure does love making our players squirm. Thanks for listening!
The mysteries and the writing are what keeps me coming back. They have a great GM who knows how to keep the tension up from episode to episode, even after the monsters are hunted. The characters keep surprising me, as new facets of them are uncovered with each arc.
ThornvaleThanks for the review Grahame. We hope we can keep the tension up for you.
This podcast has lovable characters and it's fun to try and guess the monster of the week alongside the characters. It gets exciting real fast. Give it a try!!
ThornvaleThanks Germaine! Hopefully we can keep it "real" for you. :)
I enjoy this podcast, the storylines are funny entertaining and sometimes scary. I really like the characters and the actors.
Susannah and the crew do a great job with this actual play podcast. Monster of the week is a nice deviation from D&D. The story, characters, and, chemistry of the cast is fantastic and only gets better the more you listen. Don't skip over this one.
ThornvaleThanks so much for your awesome review!
I've been binge listening to Thornvale while at work. I love how each player portrays their respective character.
I love Susannah! She comes up with the best monsters or new versions of classic monsters. I can't wait to hear what the next monster is every time another is slain!
ThornvaleThanks JamBelly! That means a lot!
FLORIDA MAN KILLS MONSTERS?!Disclaimer: Florida Man does not kill monsters in Thornvale. Instead, a cool agent, a stylish local, and a new-in-town teen fight the horrific (and occasionally hilarious) beasts that terrorize the spooky town of Thornvale, Florida, which is as atmospheric as it is charming. With drama, comedy, and action, the three protagonists save the world and make for great entertainment.
The story is deep and interesting, and would work really well as a novel. As an AP podcast? It suffers from two major problems:One, players talking through their entire thought process before doing anything, which heavily pads the runtime. Two, the old D&D problem of GM vs. Players. The Keeper clearly wants to "defeat" the Players. Advanced successes frustrate the Keeper. Full successes are unrewarded. You can hear frustration, sometimes actual player anger, when they get a full success and then immediately get knocked out, or it isn't allowed to actually help. Mixed successes are treated as failure, with a player doing what they wanted, but they broke a bone, so they can't effectively do anything else, or they lost the most important item they could have lost, and no: they don't get a choice on a possible different outcome. Failures leave you surprised that the characters haven't died yet, twenty times over. Or more.In the end, the Keeper breaks the cardinal rule of MotW: this Keeper is clearly not a fan of the Player's characters. If you're a fan of competition-style GMs, who actively want to "win" and "defeat" their players, then this podcast may be for you.
I'm an avid consumer of "monster of the week" content. From The Adventure Zone (amnesty), to the TV show "Supernatural." I love the spooky, mysterious and episodic adventures of monster hunters. I absolutely love the format, and this show has filled a void in my life that I've been desperately searching for in this genre. It's got humor, supernatural monsters, secret cults, and a few hunters that get WAY in over their heads. The cast is wonderful, and their chemistry is electric. A must watch for someone looking for "monster of the week" style shows. :)
ThornvaleHappy to fill that void for you. Amnesty was a big influence on us, so it's cool to be in the same boat now.
Wonderful show with a super confident DM/GM/Keeper. Susannah leads these fledgling monster hunters through hoops and ladders and laughs at each and every one of their missteps and I love it.
Barely started episode 41 "The hunter and the hunted" I love it!!
Not even being free is the show worth your time. Do yourself a favor and listen to cats mating it will be more entertaining.
An incredible tour de force by Susannah Lewis and her excellent players. Expanding on the themes, world, and dangers of her Deep Hollow book series, it's an integral part of the Dragon Knight Universe. All the while, some of the best roleplay, table-talk, and game immersion of the medium. This show sets the standards by which other Actual Plays ought to be measured against, in presentation and community. I can't recommend them enough!
