186: All Natural Borg Birth
Origin of the Borg. Ask a Star Trek fan about the how the Borg collective got started, and you might hear a few different theories. One is that the collective was started after V'ger joined with Decker in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Others point to stories in Star Trek literature that reveal the Borg Queen's rise to power over countless millions. But the truth is, nothing in canon states how the Borg came to be. Therefore, as promised at the end of the last show, Char and Tristan put their collective heads together and come up with their own version of how the Borg originated in this episode of To The Journey. Did their story match up to any theories of your own? Contact us at trek.fm/contact or on Twitter (@ohtheprofanity and @TheInsaneRobin) and let us know! 167: Representation Matters
Voyager's Impact and Legacy. As The Next Generation ended its TV run and set sail for the silver screen in 1994, The Powers That Be™ Rick Berman, Michael Piller, and Jeri Taylor announced that a new incarnation of the Star Trek franchise would debut early in the following year. The show would take place in uncharted space and feature a starship NOT named Enterprise. And, most notably, the ship would be captained by a woman. Now, more than 20 years after the show's debut, opinions about Voyager's place in the Star Trek legacy remain mixed, just as they were when the show aired. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan examine aspects of where Voyager thrived and failed as a Star Trek series, why these things happened the way they did, and how these examples might serve as lessons for the team developing the next series set to debut in 2017. How has Voyager influenced you? How do you feel about Voyager's legacy in the Star Trek universe? Please share your thoughts at trek.fm/contact, The Babel Conference on Facebook, or on Twitter (@ohtheprofanity and @TheInsaneRobin). We may read and discuss your thoughts on an upcoming show. Top Five Tom/Harry Moments. Bromance is a beautiful thing. The Original Series had Kirk and Spock. TNG had Data and Geordi. On Deep Space Nine, it was all about Miles and Julian. On Voyager, Tom and Harry had the ultimate friendship. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan reveal their top five moments between these two friends. To The Journey 136: Shattered Pelvis
Pairing Off. In Voyager's earlier years, 75,000 light years was a long way from home. It seemed inevitable that the crew would spend the rest of their lives en route to the Alpha Quadrant. As Captain Janeway said, "All we have is each other," so it made sense that some members of the crew began falling in love and pairing off. What if we had seen more examples of this? In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan explore possible pairings among the crew and determine if the relationship would be a hot fling, built to last, or the equivalent of a warp core breach.   Hosts Tristan Riddell and Charlynn Schmiedt   Editor Tristan Riddell   Producer Charlynn Schmiedt   Executive Producers Norman C. To The Journey 147: Dreaming of Neil Armstrong
"11:59" Commentary. For many the holiday season is a time filled with food, festivities, and family. It is also a time for reflection — to remember those before us, what has happened in the past year, and look to the future as we approach a new year. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan wax sentimental as they deliver a commentary on the Voyager Season Five episode "11:59." They reflect on their own ancestors, as well as the Janeway lineage; how Q could have made this episode better; how sometimes you can't help but live the rest of your life in the place where your car breaks down; and much more. To The Journey 140: InterQourse
"The Q and the Grey" Commentary. It's time to break out the Civil War costumes and take sides, because the Q Continuum is at war! Wait, what? That's right, war, conducted by an omnipotent species that has claimed it is above such barbaric acts in the past. It is issues like that (and more) that Char and Tristan point out in this episode of To The Journey, where they deliver a commentary on the Season Three episode "The Q and the Grey." But never fear, it is not all negative. Q episodes are fan favorites for a reason. The endless stream of one-liners in this episode alone makes it worth the watch. 261: 60,000 Miles from Home
Message in a Bottle.   Comedy in Star Trek can be hit or miss. The comedy duo of the Emergency Medical Hologram, Mark I (Robert Picardo) and the Emergency Medical Hologram, Mark II (Andy Dick), however, should go down in history as one of the great comedic duos of all time. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Suzanne Williamson discuss the fourth-season Voyager episode "Message in a Bottle," also known as "Frasier and Niles in Space."   Chapters  Intro (00:00:00)  Frasier in Space (00:02:56)  Nitpicking Mode (00:06:25)  Without the Lens Flare (00:09:58)  Why Not Vulcan? 164: The Naked Dessert
Rewriting DS9's "Fascination" into Voyager. Tristan and Char have been on a creative streak lately. Two episodes ago, they conducted a session in the writer's room and improvised an episode live during the recording. Then, they explored what Voyager might look like in the JJ-verse. For this episode, they are still feeling the creative vibes, so Char and Tristan are back in the writer's room for a rewrite of Deep Space Nine's "Fascination." In this Season Three episode, a Bajoran holiday ritual mixes with telepathy and the crew starts forming unlikely infatuations with one another. Since Voyager never got its version of this "Naked Now"/"Naked Time"-esque storytelling, Char and Tristan take the premise from "Fascination" and rework it into Voyager. Who pursues whom and do they make out? You will have to listen to the episode and find out. 163: Ample Nacelles
Voyager in the JJ-Verse. Star Trek loves playing with timelines. We have seen every incarnation of the franchise play with possibilities outside of what we consider "our" timeline, from Edith Keeler in the 1930s to Captain Janeway on in the 29th century. Aside from the "prime" universe and the Mirror Universe, we now have the Abramsverse. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan envision what Voyager and her crew would be like in the timeline created in the JJ Abrams-produced films. They discuss the likelihood of a Vulcan on the ship, a CGI alien as a regular cast member, the aesthetics of key areas of the ship, and much more. And yes, lens flares are still a thing in the 24th century. To The Journey 89: Amnesia Love Story
Unforgettable Rewrite. Chakotay-centric episodes rarely make fans' lists of favorites. Whether it's the writing, story, or the performance, they just don't stand out. For Char and Tristan, the ill-designated "Unforgettable" from Season Four tends to be just the opposite of what the title implies. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan share their thoughts on how they would make "Unforgettable" a bit more indelible. Listen on and find out what they liked, what they didn't, and how they would bolster this episode so that it would live up to its title.   Send us your feedback! 168: "Ghost Captain"
Episode Comparison. It has been awhile since Char and Tristan have compared an episode of Voyager to another episode of a Trek series. In this episode of To The Journey, they are doing it in full force. Not only do they compare plot points of Voyager's "Coda" to The Next Generation's "Cause and Effect," but they throw TNG's "The Next Phase" into the mix as well. It is a three-for-two bargain that examines the intricacies of recurring time loops and discusses what officers should do if others mistake them for dead. We hope this will prevent listeners from entering distortions in the space-time continuum, blowing up their ships every day for 80 years and being none the wiser. 180: Flip Your Ship
A Chakotay/B'Elanna Prequel. Before finding peace at Janeway's side aboard Voyager, Chakotay was a self-described "angry warrior." A former Starfleet officer, he joined the Maquis to fight for his home planet against the Cardassians, and we unfortunately know little else. A recent listener email suggested that Char and Tristan write a pre-"Caretaker" story about the "angry warrior," so in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan do just that. They write an episode on the spot that starts with Chakotay telling a story to the senior staff during Ancestor's Eve, which takes us all back to Chakotay and B'Elanna's Maquis days. The story reveals several things, such as how Chakotay recruited B'Elanna into becoming his chief engineer about the Val Jean, but also a detail about Chakotay's life that few know. It shocked Janeway and it might shock you, so tune in and find out what it is. Tuvok Unhinged.   Vulcans are generally known for being calm, cool, rational, and collected. But every once in a while even a Vulcan can come unglued at the seams. And our favorite Vulcan member of the Voyager crew, the one and only Mr. Tuvok, is no exception. Over Voyager's seven-year journey, we see Tuvok mind melding, Pon Farring, cake baking, wax flower making, flashbacking, emotion repressing, brain igniting, and even strolling onto the bridge sans uniform! (Okay, that last one was just a bad dream, but still....) In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson, Kay Shaw, and Zachary Fruhling compare their favorite "Tuvok Unhinged" moments in Star Trek: Voyager.   Chapters  Intro (00:00:00)  "Meld" - Strangling Neelix (00:03:36)  Generally Vulcan, Uniquely Tuvok (00:09:27)  Logic Therapy (00:13:02)  "Riddles" - Cake Baker and Flower Maker (00:14:53)  "Endgame" - Permanently Unhinged (00:24:26)  "Workforce" - Like a Swan (00:27:40)  Donald Duck in Vulcan Mental Land (00:29:16)  The Progression of "Repression" (00:31:14)  Collaborative Botany (00:34:34)  Rubber Ducky (00:36:13)  Vulcan Night Clubs - Transactional Immodesty (00:39:46)  Which Tuvok Are You? 218: One Hand on the Joystick
Favorite Tom Paris / EMH Moments.  Tom Paris and The Doctor may have been an unlikely comedic duo, but over seven seasons, both in and out of sickbay, they somehow became Voyager's Odd Couple. The relationship between Tom and The Doctor, however, runs deeper than mere comedy. Beneath all of the friendly banter, and the mostly friendly ribbing, lies genuine friendship, mutual respect, and lessons in life and humanity for both Tom and The Doctor. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson, Zachary Fruhling, and Kay Shaw share their favorite character moments between Voyager's irrepressible helmsman and its acerbic but compassionate Mark I Emergency Medical Hologram.
