It's hard to believe the party center of the United States, Las Vegas, started life as a watering hole for Spanish troops and explorers. In 1946 the Golden Nugget opened in downtown Las Vegas, making it one of the first casinos to open in Las Vegas. It wasn't alone for long as the gambling craze caught on, planting Vegas firmly on the map.
