Ultra-runner and 2015 Canadian Runner of the Year, Jean-Paul Bedard walked into the studio wearing a t-shirt that said ‘embrace the suck’. At a turning point in his life JP found running and with this connection he was able to not only turn his life around but use it to fuel his life. He’s now using it to bring awareness to people who have endured sexual trauma and raise money for the cause. During the weekend of the 2017 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon JP will be running 6 marathons (2 Friday, 2 Saturday and 2 Sunday including the Scotia marathon) equaling a distance of 253.2 km. JP hasn’t just embraced the suck – he’s mastered it. He took some time out of his training to sit down with me and have a chat about all of this and so much more. Here’s a peek:- Your brain wants to shut whatever you're doing down but you need to anticipate that "buffer" and embrace it- Life and endurance sport are like labour pains as you go through cycles of ups and down- When you push yourself to the brink to see what you’re capable of- Resilience has nothing to do with bouncing back but a constant resistance to any circumstance you're in.- If you're not connected with your tribe, you're not resilient- Connecting to the flow and mindset that you're going make it through - Creating a ritual of activity that will recharge you- When you forgive pain in others, you can begin to forgive pain in yourself- Treating addiction vs the pain causing addiction- Surrendering to what's going on, letting it flow through and having the faith you will make it to the other side- Surrender is not to give up, but to not fight something you have no control of
