What is adultery? How can we guard against it and how can we heal from it? In this message, Pastor Jamie helps us think biblically about adultery and understand God’s heart for us to walk in freedom. 

Adultery is infidelity, unfaithfulness, or “cheating” on a spouse by engaging in sexual activity with someone you’re not married to. 

What the bible says about adultery:

1. Adultery is a type of sexual immorality or “fornication.”

Matthew 5:27-28 “You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

2. Adultery is a sin because it hurts you and others.

1 Corinthians 6:18 “Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body.”

3. Adultery breaks the marriage covenant.

How to guard against adultery:

1. Protect your heart.

Proverbs 4:23 

Examine your input.

Think about your thoughts.

Be accountable.

2. Invest in your marriage.

Hebrews 13:4a

Resolve conflict. 

Make sex a priority.

1 Corinthians 7:2-5

3. Create agreed upon, common sense boundaries with the opposite sex. 

Ephesians 5:15 “So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.”

Know yourself.

Limit one-on-one time with someone with the opposite sex. 

How to heal from adultery

1. Figure out why it happened.

2. Do whatever is necessary to earn back trust. Trust is a wage that is earned through hard work. When there has been adultery, the goal is restoration, not retribution.

3. Re-learn intimacy. 

4. Seek God together.
