Hello Dog Lovers! This promises to be another amazing episode! I am a huge fan of Dr. Katie Kangas and I’m sure you’ll agree. She’s just a wealth of knowledge!Dr. Kangas owns and operates Integrative Veterinary Care, a private practice in San Diego, California, offering holistic and integrative health care options for pets. Her areas of special interest include nutrition, functional medicine, dental health, and pain management. Dr. Kangas has authored several articles published in veterinary journals and pet magazines, and shares her passion for pet wellness education by lecturing and presenting locally, nationally and internationally.Dr. Kangas is specifically going to explain how glyphosate is affecting not only us, but our dogs. Why don’t you start with an overview of what glyphosate is why it’s so toxic.I get why GMO foods would have high levels of glyphosate, but I understand that the non GMO foods have even higher amounts? Can you explain? What is glyphosate actually doing to our dogs’ bodies? You’ve used the term that our dogs are becoming “toxic sponges” and are exposed to glyphosate even more than we are. Please elaborate.I know that you’ve written articles about glyphosate’s reactivity to gluten. Can you share your findings? In addition to how our food is grown, is the way it’s cooked and processed. How does cooking or processing lead to toxicity? Can you give us the stats on the glyphosate/antibiotics found in food animals? What is the impact of the diet choices we’re feeding our dogs? What diseases in dogs are on the rise that you believe have a direct link to glyphosate? You recommend that we all get our dogs tested for glyphosate levels?HRI has done glyphosate testing on dogs. What were some of the findings? What foods have the highest amounts? What about treats? What about feeding organic? What are some of the solutions?Dr. Katie, where can everyone find out more information about you and Integrative Veterinary Care?https://www.intvetcare.com/on FB: @integrative veterinary careDr. Kangas mentioned:HRI Labs Use the code WOL to receive 10% off of your orderDr. Zach Bush’s ION Gut Health for Pets & ION Biome for PeopleWe appreciate our sponsor: Visionary Keto Pet FoodsAs a Wag out Loud listener you can use code WOL15 at checkout to get 15% off your first purchase! Welcome Dog Lovers! We have a great guest AND great topic in store for us today. With me is Trey Bonvillain (bon-vil-an), who heads up production and distribution for ABSC Organics, a veterinary CBD company founded in 2016 to research the benefits of CBD for pets. ABSC Pure Organic CBD Oil™ is the only CBD oil for pets that has completed a Phase One Safety trial and three Phase Two efficacy trials for epilepsy and arthritis. What is CBD?What kinds of conditions can CBD help with? Why is CBD oil for pets more expensive than CBD oil for humans? I think cost may play into why a lot of people will purchase human brands instead. But is this really necessary and is it safe? What’s the difference between hemp, marijuana and CBD?And how about the difference between isolate and full spectrum products?Dosing? What are the questions we should be asking before buying a CBD product for our dogs? What is a C of A?I would think that most manufacturers are buying their CBD from third party companies and really don’t have control over the growing, harvesting, extracting, etc. so do they really know for sure what’s in their own products? Is there anything that you’d like to mention regarding the trials that you’ve been involved with?Any closing thoughts on how we can be smarter when purchasing CBD for our dogs?Trey, where can everyone find out more information about you and ABSC Organics?URL: petpainfree.comEmail: Care@petpainfree.comSocial Media:IG and FB: @petpainfreeWe appreciate our sponsor: ABSC OrganicsUse the code WAG15 to receive 15% off your first order! Thanks for Listening! Thanks so much for tuning in again this week. Hi dog lovers! Welcome to another great show! Today’s guest, Lisa Ayoette (eye – it), is the owner & creator of Soul'y raw. Lisa started home preparing a raw diet for one very special bulldog with chronic food related illnesses and after seeing the success in her own dog, she quickly realized this was something all dogs and cats needed and from there Soul'y raw was born in 2009. Family owned and operated for over 10 years, Soul'y Raw now hand makes and processes over 60 products for both dogs and cats using the highest quality ingredients available on the market.Lisa, why don’t we start with what were you feeding your little bulldog before you switched to raw.Once you switched, what changes did you see?Why did you start the company? Were there not any others offering the same quality products?Isn’t it hard to figure out what and how much to feed to make sure their dog is getting all of the correct nutrients and in the right proportions? Like calcium and phosphorus that are so important. How much muscle meat, organs and bone should be fed as part of a raw diet?Is there a way to feed a complete and balanced raw diet on a budget?Where to start and how to transition? Why do you have single protein products?Where do you source your meat from and why is that so important? Can’t I just go to my local grocer and buy raw meat there? When feeding raw, do we need to supplement? How do you get recommended from vets?Where to find recipes/formulations?Lisa, where can everyone find out more information about you and Soul’y Raw?www.soulyraw.comSPECIAL OFFER: Use code WOL10 to receive 10% offeat@soulyraw.com for questions about feeding raw, finding other suppliers, etcSocial Media: FB or IG: @soulyrawResources Lisa mentioned: https://primalpooch.com/ https://www.socalrawfeddogs.com/We appreciate our sponsor: BowWowLabsAs a Wag out Loud listener you can use code WOL5 at checkout to get 5% off your purchase! Hello Dog Lovers! I have so been looking forward to this interview! With us is Dr. Sue Armstrong, who is an integrative veterinary surgeon working in her referral practice in Yorkshire, England. She is the founder of The True Animal Plan, an online education program for animal owners and author of two books: Cancer in Animals: What is to be Cured and The Little Book of Thinking DogThere are people, especially those hard-core raw feeders who think feeding vegetable matter is not necessary. Why do you think it’s so important to feed our dogs vegetables? What benefits do dogs get from plant fiber? If a dog eats grass do you believe that they are looking for certain nutrients found only in plant matter? Can you run through the simple hierarchy of vegetables to feed and what to avoid? You say to think rainbow? Is it best to use whatever vegetables are in season?Ideally how much of the diet should be vegetables? Some people might think that they have to feed veggies everyday? I think you said before to think in two-week chunks of time. Can you elaborate? You say that we should focus on the quality and not the quantity of the food that we are feeding. Can you explain? Can you explain why dogs can’t digest the starches in whole veggies? Like if I gave my dog a raw carrot or green bean and it comes out whole on the other end…Raw or cooked? What’s the best way to prepare veggies for your dog?Thoughts on Fermented vegetables?Do we need to be feeding organic only or are there some veggies that don’t have to be organic?Do you want to mention anything about feeding fruits? What are your thoughts on the green supplement powders on the market?Dr. Armstrong, where can everyone find out more information about you and The True Animal Plan?https://www.thetrueanimalplan.com/Social Media:FB @thetrueanimalplanIG @trueanimalplanWe appreciate our sponsor: ABSC OrganicsUse the code WAG15 to receive 15% off your first order! Thanks for Listening! Thanks so much for tuning in again this week. Dr. Dodds is experienced and widely published in clinical and research fields of hematology, immunology, endocrinology, nutrition and animal welfare. She is the co-author of two popular books, The Canine Thyroid Epidemic and Canine Nutrigenomics. Why don’t we start with what does the term wholesome nutrition mean to you?For optimal health, should we be providing homemade diets to our dogs or are there some commercial foods that you recommend? What are the optimal percentages of the macronutrients should we be feeding a healthy adult dog? Proteins, fats and carbs? How do we make sure we are feeding a complete and balanced diet?Do you believe in feeding a variety of meals/ingredients?What do you recommend for pet parents on a budget? Can you speak to food allergies and food intolerances? What’s the difference? Why is there so much confusing information out there about what actually is best to feed your dog? How do we navigate all of the false marketing claims? Many people don't feel confident and are afraid they will end up doing more harm than good by trying to feed fresh, wholesome foods... not only what to feed, but how much to feed. Hello Dog Lovers! Are you up for learning something new today? I am so thrilled to have my friend Dawn Celapino with us, and she is the owner of Leash Your Fitness, the only company where your dog is your fitness partner for every outdoor activity! Dawn started studying natural living when her dog was diagnosed with a brain tumor and since then has been on a mission to help dogs and their parents live healthier lives through movement and living a chemical free life! Can you first explain what exactly are essential oils?Aromatherapy benefits humans both physically and psychologically. But the essential oil blends and aromatherapy products we use ourselves … might not produce the same reaction in our dogs, right?I know a question that comes up quite a bit is are Essential Oils safe for dogs. How do you answer that?Who do you recommend we speak with before using essential oil for our dogs? People like you and holistic vets only? Are all essential oils extracted from plants? What conditions can they treat? How are they used?Which are safe and which are not?How can you tell if your dog does have a bad reaction to an oil?Because our dogs have a sense of smell hundreds of times more sensitive than ours, do oils always need to be diluted? How would our dog act if they don’t approve?I’ve heard that to reduce the chances of sensitivity and organ toxicity, we should generally use an oil for no more than two weeks and then provide a rest period. Do you agree?Which oils are your favorites for dogs?If someone has never used oils with their dogs, which one or two do you recommend starting with? Are there certain dogs that should not be exposed to essential oils? How can we be sure that we are getting high quality oils? When did you first learn about the benefits of using essential oils? And you clean with essential oils, right?Dawn, where can everyone find out more information about you?Leash Your Fitness. https://www.leashyourfitness.com/Essential Oils: https://www.leashyourfitness.com/essential-oils/FB and IG: @leashyourfitnessWe appreciate our sponsor: Club DIGThanks for Listening! Thanks so much for tuning in again this week. Welcome Dog Lovers! Our very special guest today is Nicole Lindsley, who is the owner of Steve's Real Food, a raw pet food company that provides pet food made from fresh whole foods in order to mimic the ancestral diet. Nicole's focus is on developing programs to help educate retailers and pet parents about the benefits of a raw, whole food diet.Nicole, could you start by sharing with us what is High Pressure Processing or HPP?Nicole, you are a HPP advocate, but HPP is controversial. Some view it as an effective way to eliminate disease-causing bacteria while having only minimal effect on the integrity of the finished product. Yet others believe raw foods that have undergone HPP have been altered to the point they can no longer be considered raw. What are your thoughts? Why did Steve’s Real Food decide to use HPP?How long have you been using HPP?What has the feedback been from your long-time clients?Does this add to the cost of your products? Can you walk us through the actual process?Does HPP effect the nutritional qualities, taste, sight or smell of the food? Those opposed to HPP argue…Proteins are denatured, some beneficial bacteria may also be destroyed, it can’t protect the food against recontamination after processing. Thoughts? You’ve conducted extensive nutrient testing on HPP raw meat diets and non-HPP raw meat diets. What have your findings been? And what about your testing for enzymes? What were the results? Are more and more companies adding HPP as a manufacturing step?Do you believe that the FDA will ever change its position on raw diets being more prone to pathogens?Nicole, can you briefly tell us about Steve’s and what makes your products different from others on the market? Is your team working on anything new?Where can people find your products? https://www.stevesrealfood.com/Social Media: FB and IG: @stevesrealfoodWe appreciate our sponsor: Cannanine Be sure to use the code WAG20 for 20% Off + Free Shipping. Welcome Dog Lovers! Today’s guest is a CHANGE-agent of magnitude for the animals of the world. I’m honored to have Dr. Andi Harper with us who is an internationally acclaimed animal communicator, certified animal chiropractor and facilitator. With a global animal communication/facilitation business, Dr. Andi inspires her clients to create magic in their life and with their animals.Dr. Andi, I’m not sure if anything else compares to saying goodbye to a loved one. But when that time comes for our dogs, I think it’s even harder because most of the time WE are the ones who have to make the ultimate decision of when that time will be. But you advise us to think ahead and be better prepared right?I know that you are a fan of people empowering themselves to know their animals, including what they will and won't do at the end of life. What does that look like? Will you spend every last dime? Will you try every treatment out there? Will you be present and allow your dog to choose when they would like to pass? Will you ask your dog questions to get the energy of what they require?Thinking back on those hard decisions I’ve had to make with my dogs, I think I waited too long and in hindsight might have selfishly prolonged the decision. Is that common? How Do I Know When the Time Is Right for My Dog?I’ve heard the advice of writing down the 5 favorite things that your dog loves to do (chasing a ball, greeting you at the door, following you around, eating, playing with other dogs, etc). And if any of those activities are declining or difficult, they are telling us, without having to say it verbally, that they may be in the final steps of their journey. Do you agree with that?Should we record our observations?I have to imagine that someone going through their last phase with their dog, in a state and fear and guilt, that they might fixate so much in the future and actually ignore today with their dog. That they should be living in the moment?I know that there’s such a thing as pet hospice care that bridges the time between the point an owner decides to no longer pursue a cure and the moment the pet passes on. Do you have any experience with this?https://animalmagiccare.com/Dr. Andi’s World podcastDr. Andi on Social Media:FB @drandiharperIG @drandisworldWe appreciate our sponsor: Frankie – The BIGGEST DogThat Ever Was. Dr. Richter’s practice focuses on the benefits of conventional and holistic treatment methods for the preventative and therapeutic care of pets as well as educating professionals and pet owners on the benefits of integrative care. He was named Holistic Veterinarian of the Year for 2019 by the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, is currently the President of the American College of Veterinary Botanical Medicine, and is a founding member of the Veterinary Cannabis Society. And Dr. Richter is also a #1 Amazon Best-Selling author of the book, The Ultimate Pet Health Guide.Dr. Richter could you start the conversation with the difference between holistic and conventional veterinary medicine? Is it more cost effective than traditional? Are the words holistic, alternative and integrative all interchangeable? If a holistic practitioner is interested in working on the whole animal, so keeps in mind not only the medical history, but also genetics, nutrition, environment, family relationships, stress levels, and other factors, is more time usually spent with a holistic veterinarian vs a conventional? So, your practice uses both conventional and holistic modalities? What circumstances for each? What are some reasons why ppl should consider holistic treatments for their dogs?Since people are a lot more educated about alternatives now, and holistic veterinary medicine is becoming more accepted and mainstream, are you finding that more and more veterinarians are interested in this type of approach and are continuing their education? How would you address comments from people who say that holistic medicine is woo woo and not backed by true science?Even some strictly conventional vets argue that there aren’t really any studies on these therapies and that they don’t see many articles in mainstream veterinary journals. How would you respond?Would you agree that the foundation to health is nutrition? What do you recommend when it comes to feeding our dogs? How about supplements? Can you share the different types of holistic therapies and how they benefit our dog’s health?Do many people turn to holistic therapies as a last resort? That maybe western medicine could not heal their dog’s illness? Can you share some success stories of patients that have benefited with holistic medicine? What is your position on vaccines? How have you seen that cbd enhancing the lives of dogs? What does the future hold for holistic veterinary medicine? Are more integrated practices offering even more treatments or are they sticking to their current offerings? What’s the best way to find a holistic veterinarian?https://drgaryrichter.com/Social Media: @ultimatepetnutrtionResources mentioned by Dr. Richter:https://mypetthrives.com/https://holisticvetcare.com/https://www.ahvma.org/We appreciate our sponsor: Cannanine Be sure to use the code WAG20 for 20% Off + Free Shipping. Hello Dog Lovers! I am excited to have Breanna Price on the show. She is on the marketing team at AlphaPaw and specializes in digital content creation and influencer partnerships. Creating an Instagram for her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Luna, is what ultimately led her to this career and her passion for working with animals. While we enjoy having our dogs sitting up with us and maybe even sleeping in our beds, what effect does the action of jumping up and down onto the couch or bed have on your dog’s muscles and joints? What type of injuries are most common as a result of jumping on and off of furniture? What about for overweight dogs? Are there certain breeds that are more prone to injury? And I imagine for people who constantly pick their dog up to put on or take down from furniture, that you’re stressing your own back in the process? We are talking about this because Breanna and her team at AlphaPaw are the makers of the PawRamp, which addresses this issue of dogs jumping on and off of furniture. Breanna, why is the PawRamp better than stairs or even other ramps? What are the features? And how did it get rated the #1 Vet Recommended Dog Ramp? How did the company start? How big of a dog can use the PawRamp? Is there a weight restriction? What’s the best way to train a dog to use the PawRamp? How many sizes do you have available? And this is great to use when getting in/out of vehicles too right? And you also sell other accessories and supplements? Hello dog lovers! It’s going to be a fantastic show because we have the one and only Dana Scott with us today and she’s the Founder and Editor in Chief of Dogs Naturally Magazine and CEO of Four Leaf Rover, a high end natural supplement company. She also breeds award winning Labrador Retrievers under the Fallriver prefix. Dana has been a raw feeding, natural rearing breeder since the 90's and is a sought-after speaker and outspoken advocate for natural health care for dogs and people. Dana works tirelessly to educate pet owners so they can influence veterinary medicine and change current vaccine, food and preventive health practices. We’ve had Billy Hoekman from Answer’s Pet Food on the show and he said that 84% of the immune system is based in the gut. We really need to pay attention to this… So Dana, why don’t you start with why gut health is so important. Why do you think that the gut microbiome is considered the forgotten organ? What are the key functions of the microbiome? How do some diets contribute to inflammation and leaky gut? What is the best diet for a healthy immune system? Can you explain how healthy fats create a diverse microbiome? What are good sources of Omega 3s? and did you say that your team is working on a new product that will contain Omega 3s?And I what about fruits and veggies? How do they play into diet and enhance the microbiome? What is your thought on supplements to help boost the immune system? Particularly pro and prebiotics? So, the more diverse the good bacteria in the gut, the better. How many strains of good bacteria should dogs have in their gut?Besides a poor diet, what are some other things that can harm the microbiome?Once we have a healthy gut, what improvements might we see in our dog?In a perfect world, what is the right amt of protein, fat and carbohydrates that we should be feeding our dogs?Dogs Naturally MagazineFour Leaf RoverFB: @dogsnaturallymagazine, @fourleafroverIG: @dogsnaturallymagazine, @four_leaf_roverWe appreciate our sponsor: Cannanine Be sure to use the code WAG20 for 20% Off + Free Shipping. Like maybe their teeth, their GI tract and how they break down enzymes? What about omega-3s? Dylan Ojeda is the founder and POO (primary operating officer) of Dook, a subscription to compostable dog poop bags based in California. Dook was launched in 2019 with his sister, Nina, after a long conversation about the environmental impact of her small doggos. After searching for eco-friendly options, they realized that the term “biodegradable” wasn’t regulated, so they found 100% plastic-free options and decided to create their own. Dook bags are made and packaged using 0% fossil fuels, eco-friendly (veggie) dye and no plastic wrapping. Yes, we’re going to talk about dog poop and I want to set the stage. One of my pet peeves is watching someone not pick up after their dog…· Dogs in the U.S. produce 10.6 million tons of poop each year. The average dog deposits about ¾ pounds of dog poop daily, which adds up to 270 pounds of poop a year.· In some cities, dog poop is the 3rd or 4th most significant cause of water pollution.Dylan, this is a serious issue! What do you tell people who say, I pick up after my dog and even reuse the plastic grocery bags. That’s practical and cost-effective isn’t it?Why did you start Dook? What is the difference between compostable, biodegradable and recyclable? Most biodegradable bags on the market are primarily made of petroleum or corn. Dook bags are 100% compostable and completely plastic free. What are they made out of?How long does it take for a Dook bag to break down?I know that many companies claim to have bags that are earth-friendly or biodegradable, but they don’t actually break down within a year, and some never degrade at all. How are they able to get away with marketing false claims?Dylan, what makes your bags different? Can you tell us about your business model?I understand that most scientifically-proven biodegradable plastics won’t degrade in a landfill because of compression and lack of oxygen or “mummification” of garbage. What’s the best way to get the best results from earth-friendly poop bags and to dispose of them correctly? How many bags would the average dog go through in a day?How do you educate people to be more responsible dog owners and to pay a little more for truly biodegradable bags vs conventional bags? How about dog-waste-only composting bins? And our friends at Dook want to share an amazing offer with our Wag Out Loud Community. Hello Dog Lovers! Thanks for tuning in! I’m excited to chat with our guest today, Doug Poynter, who has been helping dogs and training people for over 25 years. In his experience almost all Dog Behavior Problems can be traced back to a human/owner issue. Doug is passionate about teaching people the humane, gentle methods he uses that actually work to change their dogs’ behavior!Doug, Separation Anxiety is a pretty common issue right? What are some of the signs of separation anxiety?Do puppies get separation anxiety the same as dogs that are adopted later in life?I would have to think that for owners that don’t have the time, money or patience to work with an afflicted dog, that they just give the dog up for adoption or maybe even worse…like euthanizing? Can you explain why punishment is ineffective, inappropriate, and will only exacerbate the behavior? What’s the difference btw distress vs anxiety? And is it true that there is a difference btw isolation and separation? So, how can you condition a dog to accept being left alone?Do relaxants such as Rescue Remedy, CBD or aromatherapy help? What’s the time limit that a dog can be left alone?SPECIAL OFFER: For the first 11 listeners to sign up for Doug’s Separation Anxiety Course, you get the video course + 30 min phone or video conference consult with Doug for $37 total (a $197 value)www.betterdogbehaviornow.com and use the code WOL to get the $130 discountFB: @betterdogsnowWe appreciate our sponsor: MODERNBEASTUse discount code WOL for 20% off your entire purchase! Thanks for Listening! Thanks so much for tuning in again this week. Greetings Dog Lovers! I’m so excited about today’s show. We have Dr. Ernie Ward with us and he’s an internationally recognized veterinarian known for his work in the areas of general small animal practice, life extension and longevity, practice management and leadership, long-term medication monitoring, special needs of senior dogs and cats and pet obesity. Dr. Ward is the Chief Veterinary Officer and co-founder of Wild Earth, a plant-based sustainable pet food company, and the Executive Director of Education for VerticalVet. He has authored three books, been a frequent guest on television programs and served as the resident veterinarian for the “Rachael Ray Show” from 2007 until 2014. Dr. Ward also authors "The Vet Is In", a monthly column for Dogster Magazine, was named "Speaker of the Year" for the two largest veterinary conferences in the world (VMX and WVC), the "2018 Veterinary Journalist of the Year" by the New York Pet Fashion Show, and is a highly sought after veterinary media expert.Dr. Ward, why did you write this book? How long did it take to do the research, gather the science and actually write it?So, it’s long been known that some of the meat found in pet foods (especially low-cost products) comes from animals that are known as “four D”: dead, dying, diseased, or disabled animals unfit for human consumption. What exactly is factory farming? Can you share some of the statistics concerning the pet food industry? And you say that pet food is also a major cause of climate change? How so?What is the solution? You say that you have some exciting plant-based research and that dogs should not be fed an ancestral diet.Dogs originally were carnivores, but we’ve evolved them to be omnivores? What about their teeth? For example, cows have broad, flat teeth that are ideal for grinding down plant matter and dogs have narrow pointy teeth that are ideal for cutting into meat. Why do you think that plant-based is healthier for most pets? Are any other nutrients that do need to be supplemented? What are the best non-meat high quality plant proteins?Do you have any cautions against home-prepared plant-based diets? Are some inadequate and unbalanced? You’ve co-founded the plant-based pet food company Wild Earth, makers of the world’s first high-protein plant-based dog food. Can you share more about the products? Why is Wild Earth dog food better than other vegan recipes?Since it’s a kibble, do you have a high heat process like the regularly extruded kibble? Any carcinogens? What does the future hold for the pet food industry?https://wildearth.comThe Clean Pet Food Revolution: How Better Pet Food Will Change the WorldFB and IG: @DrErnieWardWe appreciate our sponsor: DOOG.
