Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR always had a bit of a greenwash feel to it if you ask me.

You might call me an old cynic but in general I don’t trust “all good news stories” like you often read in those CSR reports.

And now Bree Devin, a PR lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology, School of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations is doing serious research on this topic.

In her recent paper entitled “Half-truths and dirty secrets: Omissions in CSR communication” she introduces the notion of half-truths which describes technically truthful information that has been, or has the potential to be, undermined by the omission of key information.

Her findings suggest that public relations practitioners need to give equal consideration to what is said, as well as what is omitted…

Dr Bree Devin is a public relations lecturer in the School of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations, QUT Business School. Her research is in the area of corporate social responsibility and communication, as well as stakeholder engagement.

Bree has authored a number of papers around these topics and has a co-authored book chapter in The Handbook of Communication and Corporate Social Responsibility, which was awarded the National Communication Association s Pride Award in 2011 for the most Outstanding Book.

Bree has also presented her work at domestic and international conferences, where she has received two best paper awards.
