By most accounts, stories of black-eyed kids, at least as we recognize them today, stem from an article written in 1996 by Texas reporter Brian Bethel. In it, he describes two encounters with odd children who seemed out of place, and out of sorts, possessing poor social skills and eyes as black as coal.
