It's still the off-season, and hopefully by now you know what that means! Interviews with friends about the things they love. For this week's episode, Emily interviewed her good friend Brittany about the hit TV show Gilmore Girls. What's to love? Or more importantly, what's *not* to love? There's lots of feelings, and lots of fun this time around. We hope you enjoy.
How does a show keep itself in the public eye? Well, sometimes it jumps a shark. A ploy for attention and ratings, something so drastic that everyone would just have to tune in and see. But more often than not it goes poorly, marks the decline of a show, and just completely derails everything. This week Alex, Emily, and Levi go into their favorite examples, and how this show could jump the shark itself.
This week the team takes a run at Stephen King's classic horror novel 'The Shining' and Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation. Listen along as Alex, Emily, and Levi stumble through plot points, characters, adaptation differences, and more.
Dear friend, this week on the podcast we talked about The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It's a book that was turned into a movie. They're really great. Stephen Chbosky wrote both, and he even directed the movie. Alex, Emily, and Levi spent a lot of time trying to figure out what it all meant, and I think they're onto something. If you get a chance, you should listen. Your friend, Charlie
We're going a bit broader this week as we discuss the global holiday that is St Patrick's Day as well as the American way of celebrating it. Listen along as Alex, Emily, and Levi explore the history of the festivities. What's it actually about? What have we made it about? How did that even happen?
In our fifth installment of the off season, Alex takes Emily and Levi on a ride through the 3D animated Transformers series, Beast Wars. Optimus is a monkey, Megatron is a T-rex, and the toys are the coolest. Listen along and tell us what your favorite was on twitter @WWTAcast.
Let's crawl some walls and sling some webs! This week Alex, Emily, and Levi are discussing Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man. How did he come to be? Why do we like him? What is it that comes with great power again? What's the Parker Luck? All this and more this week.
We're going on an adventure! This week Emily takes the role of the "uninformed guest" as Levi explains the Uncharted video game series with the help of our pal Amy. Mysteries! Thrills! Surprisingly reasonable and sound explanations to otherwise supernatural happenings! This episode has it all!
Everyone's got an opinion, and with the help of the Internet everyone has a platform. It's made a great way for people to discuss the issues of the day through the famous (or infamous) device that is the hot take. Listen along as Alex, Emily, and Levi give their hot takes on hot takes and are motivated almost exclusively by their desire to go to Denny's.
In a never-ending quest to get meta, Alex, Emily, and Levi are talking about celebrities using twitter. Why do we care? Who's good at it? Who's bad at it? How would we use it if we were famous? Listen along for all that and more as we wax philosophic about the carrier pigeon powered Twitter platform.
Continuing in our spooky October series, this week we are talking all about Stephen King. From page to screen and everything in between, Alex, Emily, and Levi are walking through the deep and wide canon of Mr. King. Is he the master of horror? How is he so successful? Are the adaptations good? All this and more this week.
Space, the final frontier. We are going THERE. Join Alex, Emily, and Levi as they venture through the stars, exploring space with Captains Kirk, Picard, Janeway, and more. This beloved, decades old franchise has had plenty of incarnations, with just as much depth and we want to talk about just what makes it so successful.
It's hard to get noticed in the world of animated movies with Disney & Pixar being the heavyweights they are, but Dreamworks Animated has carved out a spot for itself with classics like The Prince of Egypt, Shrek, and the more recent How to Train Your Dragon. Listen along as Alex, Emily, and Levi discuss the offbeat film company, and Alex podcasts so hard he pukes.
Since being founded in 1997, Netflix has significantly reshaped how we think about, distribute, and consume media--for better and for worse. This week Alex, Emily, and Levi have a round table discussion of some of those changes, how they feel about them, and (as always) the broader implications of them.
What even is a timeless movie? That question is pretty much why Alex, Emily, and Levi wanted to make this episode. It's a descriptor we use but never really bother to clarify. What makes something timeless? Is it just a solid story and era-indistinct clothes or technology? Or does it go way deeper? Hint: it's probably the second, but the first is worth noting. Listen along and join the conversation on twitter @WWTAcast.
It's time to stop being polite, and start getting real. And then putting it on TV. Reality TV. That's the topic. How did unscripted television become such a juggernaut in the media? What's the point? Who even watches it? Why? All this and more with Alex, Emily, and Levi.
We're back! A dinosaur story! Or not. That's just a movie title. But it's time for the trivia kids to take to the streets and shout random facts that you may not know. Play along as Alex, Emily, and Levi quiz each other on topics from season 4, try to remember weird stuff they knew, and completely make up the answers they don't.
Love her or hate her, Taylor Swift is here in a big way. With the release of her latest album, Reputation, there was no better time to dive into the singer/songwriter's career, public image, and relationships. Listen along as Alex, Emily, and Levi try to pick apart the celebrity gossip and figure out what rings true with Taylor and the celebrity world she inhabits.
John Hughes made some of the most iconic films of the 1980s, and gave rise to an equally iconic group of actors: the Brat Pack. Listen in as Alex, Emily, and Levi talk through the cultural implications around them, how that tradition has continued, and what it ultimately says about us.
All across Britain people are falling in and out of love in this early 2000s holiday classic. From school yard crushes to crushing infidelity and everything in between, this movie has it all. It's even got a naked Bill Nighy singing a kitschy Christmas parody. So why do we like it? Aside from the obvious and aforementioned reasons, of course. Listen along and find out this week as Alex, Emily, and Levi talk through one of their favorite Christmas movies.
Who wants to hear a ghost story?! How about several ghost stories?! Listen along this week as Levi tells a few tales from the McMenamins restaurant chain and the haunted locales they call home. This is the final week of the Let Us Wear Your Skin series, and we will resume normal episodes next week.
We're nearly there! And seeing as we're nearly there we wanted to give you all another chance to ask us questions, which you did! Thank you so much to everyone who submitted questions, we could not do this show without you.
We're taking things easy for a few weeks by reviewing things we loved as children. First up is Emily leading a discussion of Madeleine L'engle's "Troubling a Star." This YA suspense thriller has nuclear waste, a man in a penguin suit, a young poet, and a prince! How could you not love it?
Week 3 of the off-season and Levi is coming in hot with a new topic for us all. It's Guy Fieri! This week Alex, Emily, and Levi are getting into everyone's favorite greasy spoon loving, burger devouring, flame shirt having TV celebrity. What's the appeal? What's the best meme of him? Do we actually dislike him or is it all in good fun? All that and more this week.
In the second episode of our Let Us Wear Your Skin series Alex tackles investigation podcasts as he tries to get to the bottom of a mystery that popped up in his own life: a series of intense chat logs with a person he doesn't remember.
