I love how all the seasons are about different people in different place and times but they’re all in the same alternate world. I found the premise of the world itself very interesting, and we see it change as time goes by. The “epistolary” (is that the right word?) format is really creative, and there’s lots of different forms of audio they use. I can’t wait for the next season!
One of relatively few podcasts to address the fact that it exists in an audio-only medium and to play with it - and deeply, deeply creepy, as you would expect from the makers of 'Welcome to Night Vale' and 'Alice Isn't Dead'. A slow unfolding of tales set in a world superficially like ours, but gradually revealed to be horrifyingly different. Enjoy .
What started with "I have no idea what's happening" has turned into a love affair! This is, and has been for a while, my favourite podcast
This made me restore faith in this medium.
My favorite was the first season, but I enjoyed all the seasons. I loved the use of found footage to tell the story and how that effects what information is revealed. I loved the monologues and how the narrators deliver them, and how each narrator is obviously unreliable in their own way. For the first season, I enjoyed the mystery and the narrator's increasing distress while trying to keep someone else calm, and her frustration despite how much she cares. The backstory is revealed in an interesting manner. In the second season, I enjoyed how the paintings were described. In the third and fourth, I enjoyed seeing a different perspective on the podcast's world. If I were to have one main listening complaint, it would be that the ad placement in the middle of the show is irritating, especially since there are already ads at the beginning and end.
This podcast pushes the boundaries of storytelling by taking the character of podcasting to the brink and back.
Interesting story organized in kind of a repetitive framing
When I first started listening to Within the Wires, I liked the calm of the tapes but had no clue what was going on or what to expect. As the story continued however and things started to play out I began to get more invested in the world Within the Wires takes place in. I liked how each season, though told differently, tells more about that world and the lives of the people in it. The voice actors also do a great job at conveying feelings and emotions to the listener while having no other voice actor to play off of.
I just finished season 1. I love how weird this is. The format is such an interesting and creative concept. The story is compelling.I wish the characters were more interesting/received more development. I also think there were some moments when the format lent itself to some clunkiness - Some instances when the narration, in attempting to give the listener some clue as to what was going on, didn't really make sense given the story. But I enjoyed it overall!
I wanted to love it, but much like WTNV, it was too all over the place for me to maintain interest.
The first season is incredible. The subsequent seasons not so much.
One the best podcasts out there!
Interesting, stylish, different, this podcast is worth a listen
Really not a fan of the 5th season, I found it overwhelmingly boring, but all the others are definitely great. Recommended.
it's quite a captivating piece of artwork, you listen to all the stories that are somehow interconnected by time and people, listen to it and do imaginary jigsaw puzzles trying to attach one memory to another. interesting characters, fantastic universe.the -1 star is simply because i could not keep up with chronology and what's going on most of the time. maybe if i was more engaged with this universe or maybe if something caught my attention in a proper way so i would start making notes and relisten to episodes, i'd have figured it all out but for a regular listener it's all foggy. nevertheless, i feel this universe and those narrative to be quite genius so listen to it and decide if it's your cup of tea or not.
The entire concept of "the society" is fascinating, and the framing of each season is such an interesting way to explore different facets and stories within the wi- universe. Both a deeply personal exploration of humanity and a poignant question about how our ideologies shape society. Definitely one of my all time faves! (Particularly fond of Season 5, as stories told in reverse are a fondness of mine) Looking forward to more!
Incredibly creative approach, unique in its way. Fantastically told, very cunning. Quite enjoyable. Don't listen in bed before sleeping or you'll actually fall asleep and will have to relisten to episodes over again (this is not a negative thing, that's how the tapes/episodes are written: relaxation tapes!). Might not be everyone's cup of tea but it's worth giving it a try out of its originality.
Season two was phenomenal. I truly enjoyed the first season, but this season was even better.
The storytelling approach in this podcast is unique, introducing the setting gradually, the way a mystery novel presents a case. Listeners post get to piece together information and grow in their understanding of this unique alternate history world.
Didn't go anywhere fast enough for me. Some episodes eventually got to something unsettling, and it actually got to an overarching plot, but was just way to slow for me.
