Had to cut my arm off to make this review, which was a bit weird because I still somehow have two arms? Not sure what I was expecting. Anyway, quality story, fantastic acting. Humour is impeccable. Absolutely grotesque (in all the best ways?) Weirdly topical. Could do with the occasional content warning, but otherwise brilliant.
Only about 5 episodes in... but I love what I've heard so far. Really out there concept and the music is phenomenal.
You think you know what you're getting into with WOE.BEGONE in the first couple of episodes. You're wrong. It's going to pleasantly surprise you every time it twists and turns. And every time you think you know what's going on, it will surprise you again.Somehow it rides that line between being mysterious and interesting while still feeling like it's paid off. Instead of just getting more questions on top of questions, you get answers to questions, and then more questions that complicate the answers to those questions. It's twisty and funny and a fun time, I'd highly recommend.
This podcast is incredibly well done! The concept of the story is easily a 10/10, the writing is great and the sound effects are like way too good???
Great podcast. Have patience. Keep playing. Watch the game runners.
I’m confounded by this show. It hasn’t taken its foot off the gas for 4 seasons (it literally never takes a week off, producing awesome intermission content between seasons) and only gets more inventive and involving as it goes. It finds the humour in its bleak set up early which only serves to make each appalling situation Mike finds himself in week after week more compelling. If this was a whole crew endeavour it would be a great show, as a one man operation it’s, well, confounding. I implore you to listen.
A darkly entertaining story about murder, cowboys, and time travel that explores ambition and the inescapable affects and cycle of violence, and later on also personhood/identity of alternate selves. The protagonist does terrible things in the pursuit of his goals, though he's funny and enough terrible things happen to him for him to remain enjoyable and even sympathetic at points. While the narration is entertaining for the most part, some of it comes across as a bit overwritten in how the main character over-explains his motivations and thoughts, especially in some of the middle episodes. I've noticed a few episodes where scenes could be edited to avoid unnecessary repetition. Sometimes the jokes (gallows humor, running gags) undercut the tension of a scene, but other times the tension is well-executed. I enjoy a lot of the jokes, but some have become overused. Though the rules for time travel are explored as the plot progresses (and the technology being new to the protagonist allows for the rules behind the time travel to be flexible) it does sometimes feel like you need a flowchart to understand everything that's going on. Plays with its conceit of being single-narrator (sometimes switching between narration and monodrama) in fun ways as well as the PNWS formula, though it eventually drops the conceit of being an in-universe podcast and other voices occasionally pop in after episode 73. The plot can swing between some exciting and interesting highs where the plot twists and keeps the listener wanting to listen to the next episode, and stretches of a couple episodes where nothing happens. I don't know if it has a planned ending, which does worry me a bit in where everything is (or rather, isn't) going, but I'm having a fun time listening. In a few ways this podcast exemplifies some of the pros and cons of indie audio drama: creators get to make their batshit creative ideas reality and explore interesting concepts a little to the left of the mainstream and outside of conventional storytelling, but on the flipside, no one is around to kill their darlings before the script gets bloated.
seriously enjoying this show so much. equal parts funny, intriguing, and gut-wrenchingly unsettling, mike walters is a dry-humoured protagonist that draws you right into his world, and this sinister game. not only is the writing awesome, but the music????? incredible. the sound serves the world and the tension so well. looking forward to more!
What if RABBITS or TANIS but just really consistently good and starring a real messy boi who loves drama
I’ve not completed the whole show just yet, but my love for the episode ‘Once.wav’ required me to write a glowing review. Woe.bg is an excellently written story with a surprising amount of subtle and sarcastic humour. The main character is frustratingly relatable (I say that with equal parts hubris and honesty) and the story line always stays just one or two (or more) steps ahead of the listener. There is a fair amount of graphic depictions for disturbing subject matter without being gratuitous. The triple threat of excellent voice acting, captivating story line and innovative music makes this audiodrama a must listen.
A wild ride, swinging between deeply disturbing and darkly hilarious. Mike Walters is at once inscrutable and extremely relatable, and I can't help but be drawn into his story. Great music and engrossing episodes that always leave me wanting more.
I first thought WOE.BEGONE wasn´t for me (bc of the game thing), but it´s one of those shows that deserves a second try! It´s deeply weird and it messes with your mind. It got lots of (often dark) humor, mystery, alternate universes and so much more. I´m not nearly caugt up yet, but the more I listen, the more intrigued I get
So fun and awesome and I love mike walters and edgar is the pookie panther ever (get it.) most confusing convulated timeline ever (I'm on ep 50 rn) and I don't know what's happening every ten eps and then it clicks for another ten and then the cycle repeats but I am having fun. One of the very few podcasts I will listen to while eating udon. This is a big thing because I will only listen to I am in Eskew or The Magnus Archives. Very big deal in the lyscookie podcast universeUpdate: I'm caught up. This is the best show ever and I physically cannot think about anything else. 84, 101, and the entire 101-120 arcs in particular were masterpieces to me. 114 lives in my brain.
This bad boy can fit so many weird little guys in it
This show begins with the premise of a podcaster delving into a mysterious online game, but quickly develops into a dark, and intriguing (sometimes funny) story with twists that you don’t see coming. The acting is great, and the framing of the narrative works really well, getting Mike’s perspective, sometimes in real time
It's very hard to explain Woe.Begone to the uninitiated. But it's a narrated audio drama about a man who gets involved in a secret internet game that gives him increasingly horrific tasks in order to keep playing, and stakes that keep him there. And while the premise is strong, and we keep listening partly to see how extreme things might get, what keeps us is the protagonist who willingly descends into this darkness, and soon you realize how broken a person he is.
Writing: AVoice Acting: AProduction: ASound Creativity: A"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint — it’s more ...wibbly wobbly" Dr WhoMike Walters is between just about everything: a job, a relationship, possibly an apartment. He hears about a mysterious online game on the darknet called Woe.Begone. Since he has nothing better to do, he signs up. His first task is emotionally difficult but he does it. He is rewarded with something impossible but very important to him. His next task is to cut off his arm. If he doesn't do it will his first reward be taken away from him? The game runners were clever - they chose a reward that would be devastating if taken away. So Mike contemplates how he could cut off his arm so that he couldn't chicken out when he starts, how to keep from making a mess, and wonders why he started this in the first place...That's a vague description of just the first couple of episodes without spoilers. Basically, Woe.Begone is action packed yet cerebral podcast. It's a first person story with a single narrator. I normally avoid those kinds of audiodramas because it gets boring listening to the same voice. However, I was never bored. It's not like Mike is a great actor - in one of the early episodes he says he is no good at changing his voice. Mike tries it once and says he is not doing it again because he can hear how bad at it he is. He figures we are intelligent enough to figure it out. That's the key to Woe.Begone, everyone is assumed to be intelligent, Mike, the audience, and most of the people involved with Woe.Begone. The voice actor does a wonderful job of conveying Mike's charm, vunerability, fear, stupidity, arrogance, and did I say charm? We also get to know the other players even without the voice change cues. Of course the podcast would be nothing without the story. It's about time travel, not about time travel itself but about what would happen if there is a game where the prize is time travel. Do you stop it, try to win it, try to ignore it, try to destroy it, try to control it? How do you know if you are winning or losing, were winning or losing, or already won or lost? Given the conundrum of time travel, the writer manages to to give us a story that makes sense at the end of every episode only to upend it at the beginning the next episode and yet have make sense by the end. It follows the same pattern for 36 fifteen to twenty minute episodes so far. When I get to the end of the story, will I think this was one of the best podcasts ever? Probably not, but it will have been one of the most fun. Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. Those who can't teach criticize. I am in the latter category, and therefore I am only one opinion among many. If you disagree with me, I will probably go back in time and change things so you do agree with me. Share your opinion before I get the chance.😁
The music is wonderful, the story is wonderful, the acting is wonderful, but the music is worth mentioning twice because of how much it enhances the experience. The protagonist is that wonderful mix of charming, and infuriating, and the premise is immediately entertaining. I enjoyed the depth of the plot, and the unique twists it took. This is simply an addicting show for too many reasons to count.
There are no shortcomings. The writing, performance, and even views on both landlords and dogs are all phenomenal. Extra points for cats interfering with recording and correct opinions on Dexter. I made a whole account because at this time, I see it has a 4.5 star rating and it should be higher. Less than 5 star reviews for this def have thin blue line imagery on display on their property and/or their body.
I am binging this show right now and I am fatally hooked. I'm a huge sucker for stories about time travel and boy does this podcast deliver. The fact that it's only voiced by one person (as far as I e listened) is incredible. Does it get a little contrived at points because of that? Sure, but it's worth suspending your disbelief. The sound design is wonderfully immersive too.
