In the first of two episodes with Dr. Ted, we uncover the basics about mitochondria. The science on these bacteria that we’ve usurped into our cells is still very new and many concepts are still quite misunderstood. Dr. Ted breaks down the biochemistry of the Electron Transport Chain that exists on the inner mitochondrial membrane and discusses how the B vitamins play a role in producing cellular energy and signaling.

He highlights the link between mitochondrial function, caloric restriction, and anti-aging. And how antioxidant supplements can actually create major problems at the cellular level.

Dr. Ted gets into the biophysics of mitochondria and the fact that they give off heat and light. Interestingly this ties back to Dr. Gerald Pollack’s work and the Fourth Phase of Water discussed in episodes 4 & 5. We discuss mitochondrial fission and fusion and why these processes are important for proper cellular energy, cell signaling, and how they can play a role in brain dysfunction.

Dr. Ted also mentions the amazing power of The Quantlet’s technology and explains how it can improve mitochondrial function with its unique use of light and cold.

Many pharmaceutical drugs act on very specific points at the mitochondrial level. Dr Ted explains why statins often cause muscular weakness and fatigue. He also highlights how drugs like Metformin inhibit mitochondrial respiration which lowers energy production and may deteriorate mitochondrial health long term and work to speed up the aging process.

And finally, we discuss the role that a lack of mitochondrial health plays in oncogenesis (cancer formation).
