If you’ve started a blog, a podcast or a video channel for your business – or you’ve been thinking about it – you’ll want to hear what our guest for episode 68 has to say today! Jay Baer, our first three-time guest to the show, is here to talk about creating an online media company with your existing business.
As entrepreneurs and solopreneurs we’re always looking for ways to take our businesses to the next level, and one of the ways we can do so is by becoming an online media company. Now that doesn’t mean changing what we’re already doing, it means being purposeful and intentional about using content we create, how we benefit our clients with it and how we profit from it.
Jay is an expert on this topic. In fact he gave the keynote speech at the 2014 National Speaker’s Association annual meeting about how he does this. I was there, giving a speech of my own, and was blown away by what he shared. I was so impressed I asked Jay to come here and talk about it with all of you, to which he graciously agreed.
In this episode, you ll learn about:
- What cardinal rule of the NSA did Jay violate in his keynote?
- Why your media hub does not have to be a blog.
- Advertising vs. Sponsorships: which term should you use?
- Why Jay began shooting a video (almost) every day.
- Hear a breakdown of how Jay spends his time.
- What role should VAs play in your content creation and execution process? Jay and I weigh in.
- Much, much more!

On today’s show Jay talks about how to create your own online media company, from his own experiences and perspective. The first thing to note is you CAN do it and you do have valuable content to share with the world. Often entrepreneurs get hung up on this point Jay says, but if you are listening to this show you have what it takes to become a media company! And if you ever doubt that remember Jay and I told you so.
The next step after knowing and deciding to do this is generating and distributing your content. Jay and I discuss how to use social media effectively: why you must focus on growing your list with social media and having a hub where you connect with them directly. Use social media to create and grow your audience, but ultimately you need to have their email addresses, or some way to contact them directly that does not rely on social media.
Once your content and your hub are rolling along the next step is to monetize. This is an important step obviously and it’s a step that should be taken once your relationships are developed. Jay shares with us what worked for him and how he has set up sponsorships (and not advertising). He goes into detail on his sponsorship models including what he provides for the sponsors and how many sponsorships work best for him. He also shares how the power of scarcity plays an important role in the structure and fulfillment of his sponsorship agreements.
Jay and I also chat about what’s next on the social media horizon. Jay’s primary focus, and what he sees as being most important for any online media company, is to tie all of the social media spokes together to create the most synergy possible. Too often things get fractured so it’s necessary to have your Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc all on the same page.
There’s plenty more where that came from in this episode! Jay provided a plethora of valuable insights as well as his own personal experiences in this interview, be sure to have a listen. It was an absolute pleasure to have Jay back for a third time, please join me in thanking him for being here. Thank you too and we’ll see you next time!
