RATING
Desert Skies is genuinely entertaining. Lowkey in premise but comes to together by the pathos of its execution. The first 2 episodes definitely emulate people coming to terms of the nature of their death. Mixing both comedy and drama, that combination gives depth and humanity to the story. I can even see this as a show you would see on Adult Swim. It reminds me of shows I saw in my childhood. Honestly, I prefer that to the nihilism of certain shows like Rick & Morty.
So far I started around 3 to 4 episodes in Liminal Lands and what stands out to me in this project is the earnestness of its creator. It has pretty straightforward in the beginning with alright sound. But it actually takes me back to a forgotten part of my childhood when I was reading the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Liminal lands combining survivalist fiction with the esoteric is something I can get behind on. The creator definitely gives the main character the feel of a family man and sells it with genuine frankness. Whether it's direction stays personal or large, the Liminal Lands has heart and its greatest strength. I can see why people gravitate to it.
Shadow and Smoke has something straightforward with its premise but at time it starts out strong with its delivery as something that frames itself with two partner based dynamic. Dalton manages to present himself both as someone grumpy yet also driven and curious about what situations he bumps into. Amber is harder to read as I have just listened to early chapters and is portrayed as no nonsense when it comes to work. Both morally dubious yet leaves room to depth and likeability to grow as I continue to listen. I will wrote more soon. Otherwise, sound design is smooth and clear and easy yo follow. Sometimes being straightforward is the best direction on storytelling. Check out S&S.
